If a shift was not completed and one of the
following messages appears in the
multifunction display:
R TC Shift Conditions Not Fulfilled
The shift did not take place. At least one
shift condition was not met.
XRepeat the shifting procedure.
R TC in Neutral
The shift did not take place. The transfer
case is in neutral. Transfer case position N
appears in transfer case indicator :.
XRepeat the shifting procedure.GWarning!
If the transfer case is in Neutral, the park
position P of the automatic transmission will
not hold the vehicle. The parking brake must
be engaged to hold the vehicle in place.
R TC shift Procedure Canceled
The shift did not take place.
XRepeat the shifting procedure.
R Transfer Case Services Required
There may be a malfunction in the system.
XRepeat the shifting procedure.
If the shifting procedure still does not take
place:
XHave the vehicle checked at an
authorized Mercedes-Benz Center as
soon as possible.i If the SmartKey is in starter switch
position 0 or 1, an alarm will sound if the
transfer case is in Neutral and the driver’s
door is opened.
Switch the transfer case to gear position
HIGH or LOW .
Differential locks
Differential locks improve the vehicle’s
tractive power off-road. Switch differential
locks
R for off-road driving
R to switch the ABS off during off-road driving
R for driving through water
R when driving on deep snow and icy or
fouled surfaces
! Do not switch the front axle differential
lock when driving around tight corners. This
restricts steering ability.
! When driving off-road, apply only
moderate pressure to the accelerator pedal
if the differential locks are switched on.
When operating the vehicle on a single-axle
dynamometer – no matter how briefly – you
must
R raise the axle not being driven
or
R disconnect the drive shaft
and
R switch the transfer case differential lock.
Otherwise the transfer case can be
damaged, which is not covered by the
Mercedes-Benz Limited Warranty.
GWarning!
Never drive on pavement with differential
locks switched.
Steering control will be strongly affected with
the differential locks activated.

GWarning!
No messages will be displayed if either the
instrument cluster or the multifunction
display is inoperative.
As a result, you will not be able to see
information about your driving conditions,
such as
Rspeed
Routside temperature
Rwarning/indicator lamps
Rmalfunction/warning messages
Rfailure of any systems
Driving characteristics may be impaired.
If you must continue to drive, do so with added
caution. Contact an authorized Mercedes-
Benz Center as soon as possible.

Activating the instrument cluster
The instrument cluster is activated when you
Ropen the driver’s door

illumination
Use reset button : to adjust the illumination
brightness for the instrument cluster and the
switches on the center console.
XTo brighten illumination: Turn reset
button : clockwise until the desired level
of illumination is reached.
XTo dim illumination: Turn reset
button : counterclockwise until the
desired level of illumination is reached.
iThe instrument cluster illumination is
dimmed or brightened automatically to suit
ambient light conditions.
The instrument cluster illumination will also
be adjusted automatically when you switch
on the vehicle’s exterior lamps.
Coolant temperature gauge
The coolant temperature gauge is located on
the left side in the instrument cluster
(Y page 26).
GWarning!
Driving when your engine is overheated can
cause some fluids which may have leaked into
the engine compartment to catch fire. You
could be seriously burned.

Lighting submenu
Access the Lighting submenu via the
Settings menu. Use the Lighting submenu
to change the lamp and lighting settings on
your vehicle.

manual operation (Manual) or daytime
running lamp mode (Constant).
With daytime running lamp mode switched on
and the exterior lamp switch in
position $ or Ã, the low-beam
headlamps are switched on when the engine
is running.
In low ambient light conditions the following
lamps will come on additionally:
RParking lamps
RTail lamps
RLicense plate lamps
RSide marker lamps
For more information on the daytime running
lamp mode, see (Y page 76).
For safety reasons, changing the setting for
the daytime running lamp mode is not
possible while the vehicle is in motion.
The following message appears in the
multifunction display:
Settings can only be made at a
standstill.
For safety reasons, resetting all the functions
of all submenus to the factory settings while
driving (Y page 106) will not deactivate the
daytime running lamp mode.
Switching locator lighting on or off
With the locator lighting feature activated and
the exterior lamp switch in position Ã, the
following lamps will come on during darkness
when the vehicle is unlocked using button
% on the SmartKey:
RParking lamps
RTail lamps
RLicense plate lamps
RSide marker lamps
RFront fog lamps
The locator lighting goes out when the driver’s
door is opened.
If you do not open the driver’s door after
unlocking the vehicle with the SmartKey, the

You can temporarily deactivate the
headlamps delayed shut-off feature:
XBefore exiting the vehicle, turn the
SmartKey in the starter switch to position
0.
XThen turn it to position 2 and back to
position 0.
The headlamps delayed shut-off feature is
deactivated. It will reactivate as soon as
you start the engine.
Switching interior lighting delayed shut-
off on or off
Use this function to set whether you would
like the interior lighting to remain on for
10 seconds during darkness after you have
removed the SmartKey from the starter
switch.
XPress button V or U repeatedly until
the Settings menu appears in the
multifunction display.
XPress button &.XMove the selection marker with button
W or X to the Lighting submenu.

Vehicle submenu
Access the Vehicle submenu via the

to set the automatic central locking.
Switching automatic central locking on or
off
Use this function to switch the automatic
central locking on or off. With the automatic
central locking activated, the vehicle is
locked centrally at a vehicle speed of
approximately 9 mph (15 km/h).

Activating easy-entry/exit feature
Use this function to activate and deactivate
the easy-entry/exit feature (Y page 71).
GWarning!
You must make sure no one can become
trapped or injured by the moving steering
wheel when the easy-entry/exit feature is
activated.
To stop steering wheel movement do one of
the following:
RMove steering wheel adjustment stalk.
RPress one of the memory position buttons.
RPress the memory button.
Do not leave children unattended in the
vehicle, or with access to an unlocked vehicle.
Children could open the driver’s door and
unintentionally activate the easy-entry/exit
feature, which could result in an accident
and/or serious personal injury.

Use the Trip computer menu to call up
statistical data on your vehicle.

When you enter the Trip computer menu,
you will always see the fuel consumption
statistics since start first.

Cigarette lighter

When leaving the vehicle, always remove the
SmartKey from the starter switch, take it with
you, and lock the vehicle. Do not leave
children unattended in the vehicle, or with
access to an unlocked vehicle. A child’s
unsupervised access to a vehicle could result
in an accident and/or serious personal injury.
If the engine is off and the cigarette lighter is
being used extensively, the vehicle battery
may become discharged.

Cigarette lighter : will pop out
automatically when hot.
! The lighter socket can be used to
accommodate 12V DC electrical
accessories (up to a maximum of 180 W)
designed for use with the standard

however, that connecting accessories to
the lighter socket (for example extensive
connecting and disconnecting, or using
plugs that do not fit properly) can damage
the lighter socket. With the socket
damaged, the lighter may not function
properly any longer.

The power outlets can be used to
accommodate 12V DC electrical accessories
(e.g. auxiliary lamps, mobile phone chargers)
up to a maximum of 15 A (180 W).

! In order to activate the Tele Aid system, a
subscriber agreement must be completed.
To ensure your system is activated and
operational, please press Information
button E to perform the acquaintance
call. Failure to complete either of these
steps may result in a system that is not
activated.

Shortly after the completion of your Tele Aid

access to account information, remote door
unlock and more.
The Tele Aid system is available if
R it has been activated and is operational.
Activation requires a subscription for
monitoring services, connection and

R vehicle battery power is available
R the relevant cellular phone network and
GPS signals are available and pass the
information on to the Customer Assistance
