turn the front wheels away from the curb to help keep the car from roll-ing. If there is no curb or if it is required by other conditions to keep the carfrom rolling, block the wheels.
o Under some conditions your park-
ing brake can freeze in the engagedposition. This is most likely to hap- pen when there is an accumulation of snow or ice around or near therear brakes or if the brakes are wet. If there is a risk that the parking brake may freeze, apply it only tem-porarily while you put the gear se- lector lever in first or reverse gear and block the rear wheels so the carcannot roll. Then release the park- ing brake.
o Do not hold the vehicle on the up- grade with the accelerator pedal. This can cause the transmission to overheat. Always use the brakepedal or parking brake. o Don't "ride" the brake or clutch pedal.
This can increase fuel consumptionand also increase wear on these components. In addition, driving with your foot resting on the brake pedalmay cause the brakes to overheat, which reduces their effectiveness and may lead to more serious con-sequences.
o Take care of your tires. Keep them
inflated to the recommended pres-sure. Incorrect inflation, either too much or too little, results in unnec- essary tire wear. Check the tire pres-sures at least once a month.
o Be sure that the wheels are aligned
correctly. Improper alignment canresult from hitting curbs or driving too fast over irregular surfaces. Poor alignment causes faster tire wearand may also result in other prob- lems as well as greater fuel con- sumption.
o Keep your car in good condition. For better fuel economy and reducedmaintenance costs, maintain yourcar in accordance with the mainte- nance schedule in Section 5. If you drive your car in severe conditions,DRIVING FOR ECONOMY
C140A01A-GAT You can save fuel and get more kilo- meters from your car if you follow these suggestions:
o Drive smoothly. Accelerate at a moderate rate. Don't make "jack- rabbit" starts or full-throttle shiftsand maintain a steady cruising speed. Don't race between stop- lights. Try to adjust your speed tothat of the other traffic so you don't have to change speeds unneces- sarily. Avoid heavy traffic wheneverpossible. Always maintain a safe distance from other vehicles so you can avoidunnecessary braking. This also re- duces brake wear.
o Drive at a moderate speed. The faster you drive, the more fuel yourcar uses. Driving at a moderate speed, especially on the highway, isone of the most effective ways to reduce fuel consumption.

chains on the tire will provide a greater driving force, but will not prevent sideskids. NOTE: Tire chains are not legal in all prov- inces. Check province laws beforefitting tire chains. C160C01A-AAT Use High Quality Ethylene Glycol Coolant Your Hyundai is delivered with high quality ethylene glycol coolant in thecooling system. It is the only type of coolant that should be used because it helps prevent corrosion in the coolingsystem, lubricates the water pump and prevents freezing. Be sure to replace or replenish your coolant in accor-dance with the maintenance schedule in Section 5. Before winter, have your coolant tested to assure that its freez-ing point is sufficient for the tempera- tures anticipated during the winter.
C160A01A-AAT The more severe weather conditions of winter result in greater wear and other problems. To minimize the prob- lems of winter driving, you should fol-low these suggestions:
C160B01A-GAT Snowy or Icy Conditions To drive your vehicle in deep snow, it may be necessary to use snow tires orto install tire chains on your tires. If snow tires are needed, it is necessary to select tires equivalent in size andtype to the original equipment tires. Failure to do so may adversely affect the safety and handling of your car.Speeding, rapid acceleration, sudden brake applications, and sharp turns are potentially very hazardous prac-tices. During deceleration, use engine braking to the fullest extent. Sudden brake applications on snowy or icyroads may cause skids to occur. You need to keep sufficient distance be- tween the vehicle in front and yourvehicle. Also, apply the brake gently. It should be noted that installing tire C160D01A-AAT Check Battery and Cables Winter puts additional burdens on the battery system. Visually inspect thebattery and cables as described in Section 6. The level of charge in your battery can be checked by your Hyun-dai dealer or a service station.
C160E01A-AAT Change to "Winter Weight" Oil if Necessary In some climates it is recommended that a lower viscosity "winter weight" oil be used during cold weather. SeeSection 9 for recommendations. If you aren't sure what weight oil you should use, consult your Hyundai dealer.

Maintenance Requirements
The maintenance required for your
Hyundai can be divided into three main areas:
o Specified scheduled procedures
o General checks
o Do-it-yourself maintenance It is suggested that genuine Hyundai
service parts be used for any requiredrepairs or replacements. Other parts of equivalent quality such as engine oil, engine coolant, manual transmission
oil, brake fluid and so on which are not supplied by Hyundai Motor Company or its distributor may be used withoutaffecting your warranty coverage but you should always be sure these are equivalent to the quality of the originalHyundai parts. Your Service Passport provides further information about your warranty coverage.

A Few Tips
Whenever you have your Hyundai ser- viced, keep copies of the service records in your glove box. This will help ensure that you can document that the required procedures have been performed to keep your warranties ineffect. This is especially important when ser-vice is not performed by an authorizedHyundai dealer. F020A01Y-GAT Inspection should be performed any time a malfunction is experienced or suspected. Receipts for all emissioncontrol system services should be retained to demonstrate compliance with conditions of the emissions sys-tem warranty. For severe usage maintenance re-
quirements, see page 5-8 of this sec-tion.

EXPLANATION OF SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE ITEMS
F060M01A-AAT
o Engine Oil and Filter
The engine oil and filter should be
changed at those intervals specified in the maintenance schedule. If the ve- hicle is being driven in severe condi-tions, more frequent oil and filter changes are required.
F060N01HR-GAT
o Valve Clearances
An incorrect valve clearance will not
only result in rough engine operation, but will also cause excessive noiseand reduced engine output.
Inspect valve clearance and adjust as
required while the engine is hot.
See page 9-4 for the valve clearance
description. F060D01TB-GAT
o Fuel Lines, Fuel Hoses and
Connections
Check the fuel lines, fuel hoses and
connections for leakage and damage. Have a trained technician replace any damaged or leaking parts immediately. F060C01A-AAT
o Fuel Filter A clogged filter can limit the speed at which the vehicle may be driven, dam- age the emission system and cause hard starting. If an excessive amountof foreign matter accumulates in the fuel tank, the filter may require re- placement more frequently. After installing a new filter, run theengine for several minutes, and checkfor leaks at the connections. Fuel fil- ters should be installed by trained technicians.
WARNING:
Never work on injection system withengine running or within 30 sec- onds after shutting off engine. High pressure pump, rail, injectors andhigh pressure pipes are subject to high pressure even after the engine stopped. The fuel jet produced byfuel leaks may cause serious injury, if it touch the body. People using pacemakers should not move than30cm closer to the ECU or wiring harness within the engine room while engine is running, since thehigh currents in the Common Rail system produce considerable mag- netic fields.

Ventilation Hoses
Inspect the surface of hoses for evi- dence of heat and/or mechanical dam- age. Hard and brittle rubber, cracking, tears, cuts, abrasions, and excessiveswelling indicate deterioration. Particu- lar attention should be paid to examin- ing those hose surfaces nearest tohigh heat sources, such as the ex- haust manifold. Inspect the hose routing to assure that the hoses do not come in contact with any heat source, sharp edges or mov- ing component which might cause heatdamage or mechanical wear. Inspect all hose connections, such as clamps and couplings, to make sure they aresecure, and that no leaks are present. Hoses should be replaced immedi- ately if there is any evidence of dete-rioration or damage. F060B01HR-GAT
o Drive Belts
