If warning light xonly lights
up on the instrument panel
(with a message on the reconfigurable
multifunctional display, where pro-
vided), stop the car immediately and
go to the nearest Fiat Dealership.
Leakage of hydraulic fluid from the
braking system will compromise func-
tionality of the braking system, either
of the conventional type or with ABS.
WARNINGEOBD SYSTEM
The EOBD system (European On Board
Diagnosis) allows continuous diagnosis of
the components of the car correlated with
emissions. It also alerts the driver, by turn-
ing on the warning light
Uon the in-
strument panel (together with relevant
message on the multifunctional display,
where provided) (see section “Warning
lights and messages”), when these condi-
tions are no longer in peak conditions.
The objective is:
❒to keep the system efficiency under
control;
❒warn when a fault causes emissions
levels to increase;
❒warn of the need to replace deterio-
rated components.
The system also has a diagnostic connec-
tor that can be interfaced with appropri-
ate tools, which makes it possible to read
the error codes stored in the control unit
together with a series of specific parame-
ters for engine operation and diagnosis.
This check can also be carried out by the
traffic police.
IMPORTANT After eliminating the in-
convenience, to check the system com-
pletely, Fiat Dealerships are obliged to run
a bench test and, if necessary, road tests
which may also call for a long journey. Go to a Fiat Dealership as
soon as possible if warning
light
Ueither does not light
up when the key is turned to
MAR to if while travelling the warning
lights comes on either steady or blink-
ing (along with a message on the mul-
tifunctional display, where provided).
The operation of warning light
Umay
be checked by the traffic police using
specific devices. Follow the laws in
force in the country where you are dri-
ving.
GSI SYSTEM
(for versions with
mechanical gearbox
only)
(where provided)
The gear shift indication makes it possible,
on cars with a manual gearbox, to suggest
the driver should change gear (higher gear:
shift up, see Fig. 1or lower gear: shift
down, see Fig. 2), through a dedicated in-
dication in the control panel. This sugges-
tion to change gear is designed to improve
consumption and ensure the best driving
style.
NOTE: the indication in the instrument
panel remains on until the driver makes
a gear change or until the driving condi-
tions return to a situation where a gear
change is not required to improve con-
sumption.

USING THE GEARBOX
To engage the gears, press the clutch ped-
al fully and shift the gear lever into one of
the required positions (the diagram is
shown on the knob).
IMPORTANT Reverse may only be en-
gaged when the car is at a standstill. With
the engine running, wait for at least 2 sec-
onds with the clutch pedal fully pressed
before engaging reverse to prevent dam-
age to the gears and grating.
To engage 6th gear (where provided), op-
erate the lever by pressing it towards the
right in order to avoid engaging 4th gear
by mistake. The same applies to shifting
from 6th to 5th gear.
To engage reverse Rfrom idle position,
lift the sliding ring A-fig. 2-3under the
knob and at the same time shift the lever
rightwards and then backwards (petrol
versions only).
For Multijet versions, simply move the
lever rightwards and then backwards.
fig. 2F0H0150mfig. 3F0H0353m
Press the clutch pedal fully
to change gears correctly.
For this reason, there must be no ob-
stacles on the floor under the pedals:
ensure that rubber mats (if any) are
correctly positioned, not interfering
with the pedals.
WARNINGDo not drive with your hand
resting on the gear lever, be-
cause this pressure, even if
light, over time can wear out
the gearbox inner components.

locking all the door using the lock in case
of a power fault.
Proceed as follows to lock the doors:
❒insert the ignition key in lock B
❒turn the device to position 1and close
the door.To open the doors:❒insert the key in the lock on driver’s

STARTING
THE ENGINE
JUMP STARTING fig. 2
If the battery is flat, the engine may be
started using an auxiliary battery with the
same capacity or a little higher than the
flat one.
Proceed as follows to start the engine:
❒Connect positive terminals (+near
the terminal) of the two batteries
with a jump lead;
❒With a second lead, connect the neg-
ative terminal (–) of the auxiliary bat-
tery to an earthing point
Eon the en-
gine or the gearbox of the car to be
started;
❒start the engine;
❒When the engine has been started, re-
move the leads reversing the order
above.
If after a few attempts the engine does not
start, do not insist but contact the near-
est Fiat Dealership.

YEARLY INSPECTION
PLAN
The following yearly inspection plan is rec-
ommended for cars clocking less than
20,000 km a year (e.g. approximately
15.000 km):
❒check tyre conditions/wear and pres-
sure (included spare wheel)
❒check lighting system operation (head-
lights, direction indicators, hazard
lights, boot, passenger compartment,
instrument panel warning lights, etc.)
❒check windscreen wiper/washer
(nozzle direction and blade wear)
❒check front disk brake pad conditions
and wear;
❒visually inspect the conditions of: en-
gine, gearbox, flexible and stiff piping
(exhaust, fuel feed, brakes), rubber
parts (boots, sleeves, bushings, etc.)
❒check cleanness of locks, bonnet and
boot and lever cleanness and lubrica-
tion
❒check battery charge;
❒visually check the various drive belt
conditions;
❒check and top up liquids if required
(engine coolant, brakes, windscreen
washer, battery, etc.)
❒change engine oil;
❒change engine oil filter;
❒change pollen filter (where provided).
ADDITIONAL
INTERVENTIONS
Every 1,000 km or before long journeys,
check and, if necessary, top up:
❒engine coolant fluid level;
❒brake fluid level;
❒windscreen washer fluid level;
❒tyre pressure and conditions.
Every 3,000 km check and, if necessary,
top up: engine oil level.
You are recommended to use
PETRONAS LUBRICANTS products, de-
signed and produced specifically for Fiat
cars (see table “Capacities” in section
“Technical specifications”).
