Before you check anything in the engine compartment,
always read and heed all WARNINGS::::,
& in "Working in
the engine compartment" on
page 224.
- Unscrew the cap ce::,; to the e ngine oil filling hole
::::> fig. 168.
Carefully top off with the appropriate oil in 0.5 liter doses.
- Check the oil level again after two minutes::::,
page 229.
Top off the oil again, if necessary.
- Screw the cap back on the filling hole and slide the oil
d ips tick in as far as it will go.
& WARNING
• While topping off, the oil must not come in contact with hot
engine parts -fire hazard!
• The oil filler cap must be properly secured to prevent oil from
being sprayed on the hot engine and exhaust system when the
engine is running -fire hazard!
• If your skin has come in contact with the engine oil, you must
subsequently cleanse it thoroughly.
0 Note
• The oil level must not be above range @-danger of converter or
engine damage! Contact a qualified workshop to draw off oil, if
necessary .
• Audi does not recommend the use of oil additives. They may
damage the engine and adversely affect your New Vehicle Limited
Warranty .
<£> For the sake of the environment
• Under no circumstances can the oil come in contact with the
sewage network or the soil.
• Observe and fol low legal regulations when disposing of empty
oi l containers. •
Changing the engine oil
We recommend that hove your oil changed by an autho ­
rized Audi dealer or a qualified service station.

T he engine oil must be changed according to the intervals specified
in your Warranty
& Maintenance booklet. This is very important
because the lubricating properties of oil diminish gradually during
normal vehicle use.
Under some circumstances the engine oil shou ld be changed more
frequently. Change oil more often if you drive most ly short
distances , operate the vehicle in dusty areas or under predomi­
nantly stop -and -go traffic conditions, or have your vehicle where
temperatures remain below freezing for extended periods . .,_

Di sco nnecting the batt ery
Some vehic le functions (power window regulators, for example) are
lost if the battery termina ls are disconnected. These functions have
to be relearned after the battery terminals are connected again . To
prevent this, the battery should only be disconnected from the
vehicle el ectrical system if absolutely necessary.
Vehic les not driven f or lo ng peri o ds a nd sho rt -di stan ce
o pera tion
The battery can a lso become discharged with the veh ic le stationary
by id ling current consumers . When the vehic le is sta tionary
(planned event) during the
cold t ime of the year, you should remove
the battery and store it in a nonfreezing area . This way you prevent
that the battery "freezes" and thereby is destroyed . During the
w arm er time of the year it is sufficient to disconnect the negative
terminal from the battery . Occasionally charge even a disconnected
battery .
Wint er opera ti on
During the winter months, battery capacity tends to decrease as
tempera tures drop . This is because more power is a lso consumed
while starting, and the headlights, rear window defogger, etc., are
used more often .
Avoid unnecessary power consumption, particularly in city traffic or
when trave ling only short distances. Let your authorized Audi dea ler
check the capacity of the vehicle battery before w inter sets in
=>
page 239. A well charged battery will not only prevent starting
problems when the weather is cold, but w ill also last longer.
Replacin g battery
The new battery m ust h ave the same capacity , voltage (12 volts),
amperage, construction and p lug sea ling, as the orig inal battery.
Specif ications are listed on the battery housing. Batteries special ly
developed by Audi fulfil l the maintenance, output, and safety
requirements.
When instal ling the battery, make sure the ignition and all electrica l
consumers are switched off=>

We recommend that you use maintenance -free or c y c le -resis­
tant /leak -proof
batte ries according to the sta ndards TL 825 06 (from
December 1997) and VW 7 50 73 (from August 2001).
(D Note
• All work on the battery requires technical knowledge . Please
contact an Audi dealership or another authorized fac ility for ques ­
tions about the battery- danger of acid burns and exp losion hazard!
• The battery must not be opened! Do not try to change the
battery's liquid level, otherwise detonating gas wil l escape from the
bat tery -explosion hazard!
• The AGM battery in the luggage compartment cannot leak,
because the electrolyte for this battery is abso rbed in to a special
glass mat . This leak-proof battery must not be replace with a
conventiona l battery.
• Make sure the ventilation hose on the side of the battery is
connected, otherwise fumes or battery acid can leak out.
• Battery holder and terminals always have to be secured correctly .

page 238.
Because of the problem of proper disposal of a battery, we recom­
mend your authorized Audi deale r change the battery for you .
Batteries contain sulfuric acid and lead and must always be
disposed of properly in comp liance with a ll environmental regula ­
tions . D isposing of vehicle batteries improperly is very dangerous to
the environment. Make sure that the removed batte ry cannot over ­
balance , otherwise sulfuric acid might escape! •

Tire service life
The service life of tires depends on a lot of different things
including proper installation and balancing, correct tire
pressure and driving style.

The original tires on your vehicle have 1/16 inch (1.6 mm) high "wear
indicators":::::, fig. 175 running across the tread. Depending on the
make, there will be six to eight of them evenly placed around the
tire. Marks on the tire sidewall (for example "TWI" or other symbols)
indicate the positions of the tread wear indicators. Worn tires must
be replaced. Different figures may apply in other countries.:::::,&.
Tire pressure
Incorrect tire pressure causes premature wear and can cause
sudden tire blow-out. For this reason, tire pressure must be checked
at least once a month .:::::,
page 249.
Driving style
Driving fast around curves, heavy acceleration and hard braking
increase tire wear.
Rotating tires for more even wear
For all four tires on your vehicle to have the same service life, we
recommend that the front and rear tires are rotated according to the
tire manufacturer's suggested tire rotation intervals. Please
remember the following:
• Tire rotation intervals may differ from the vehicle service inter­
vals outlined in your Warranty
& Maintenance Booklet.
• The longer one tire is used in one location on the vehicle, the
more it wears at certain points; therefore, we recommend that you
follow the tire manufacturer 's suggested tire rotation intervals.
• Vehicles with front-wheel drive experience more tread wear on
the front wheels compared to all-wheel drive (quattro®l .
• Please rotate tires as shown .:::::, fig. 176.
• Extra care must be taken when rotating direction -specific tires
:::::, page 277.
Wheel balancing
The wheels on new vehicles are balanced. However, various situa­
tions during everyday driving can cause them to become unbal ­
anced, resulting in vibrations you can usually feel through the
steering wheel.
Unbalanced wheels must be rebalanced to avoid excessive wear on
steering, suspension and tires. A wheel must also be rebalanced
when a new tire is installed. _,,

Maintenance
General
Your vehicle has been designed to help keep maintenance require­
ments to a minimum.
However, a certain amount of regular maintenance is still necessary
to assure your vehicle's safety, economy and reliability.
For detailed vehicle maintenance consult your Warranty
& Mainte­
nance booklet.
Under difficult operating conditions, for example at extremely low
outside temperatures, in very dusty regions, when towing a trailer
very frequently, etc., some service work should be performed
between the intervals specified. This applies particularly to:
• oil changes, and
• cleaning or replacing the air filter.

By regularly maintaining your vehicle, you help make sure that emis­
sion standards are maintained, thus minimizing adverse effects on
the environment. •
Important considerations for you and your
vehicle
The increasing use of electronics, sophisticated fuel injection and
emission control systems, and the generally increasing technical
complexity of today's automobiles, have steadily reduced the scope
of maintenance and repairs which can be carried out by vehicle
owners.
Also, safety and environmental concerns place very strict
limits on the nature of repairs and adjustments to engine and trans­
mission parts which an owner can perform.
Controls and equip­
ment Safety first Vehicle operation
Maintenance, adjustments and repairs usually require special tools,
testing devices and other equipment available to specially trained
workshop personnel in order to assure proper performance, reli­ ability and safety of the vehicle and its many systems.
Improper maintenance, adjustments and repairs can impair the
operation and reliability of your vehicle and even void your vehicle
warranty. Therefore, proof of servicing in accordance with the main­ tenance schedule may be a condition for upholding a possible
warranty claim made within the warranty period.
Above all, operational safety can be adversely affected, creating unnecessary risks for you and your passengers.
If in doubt about any servicing, have it done by your authorized Audi
dealer or any other properly equipped and qualified workshop. We
strongly urge you to give your authorized Audi dealer the opportu­
nity to perform all scheduled maintenance and necessary repairs.
Your dealer has the facilities, original parts and trained specialists
to keep your vehicle running properly .
Performing limited maintenance yourself
The following pages describe a limited number of procedures which
can be performed on your vehicle with ordinary tools, should the
need arise and trained personnel be unavailable. Before performing
any of these procedures, always thoroughly read all of the appli­
cable text and carefully follow the instructions given. Always rigor­
ously observe the
WARNINGS provided.

Alway s follow commonly a ccepted safety practices and general

• Do not attempt any of the maintenance, checks or repairs
described on the following pages if you are not fully familiar with
the se or other procedures with re spect to the vehicle , or are uncer ­
tain how to proceed .
• Do not do any work without the proper tools and equipment.
Have the necessary work done by your authorized Audi dealer or
another properly equipped and qualified work shop .
• The engine compartment of any motor vehicle is a potentially
hazardous area . Never reach into the a rea around or touch the
radiator fan. It is temperature controlled and can switch on
suddenly · even when the engine is off and the ignition key has
been removed . The radiator fan switches on automatically when
the coolant reaches a certain temperature and will continue to run
until the coolant temperature drops .
• Always remove the ign ition key before anyone gets under the
vehicle .
• Always support your vehicle with safety stands if it is neces ­
sary to work underneath the vehicle. The jack supplied with the
vehicle is not adequate for this purpose and could collap se
c ausing serious personal injury .
• If you must work underneath the vehicle with the wheel s on
the ground , always make sure the vehicle is on level ground , that
the wheels are always securely blocked and that the engine c annot be started .
• Always make sure the tr ansmission selecto r lever (automatic
transmission ) is in "P" (Park position ) (automatic transmission ) or
Neutral (manual transmi ssion) and the hand brake is firmly
applied .

• Cha nging t he en gine setti ngs will adversely a ffec t emi ssio n
l evels. This is detrimenta l to the environment and increases fuel
consumptio n.
• Always o bse rve enviro nmenta l regu lations when dis posing of
o ld eng ine o il, used brake flu id, d irty eng ine coola nt, spe nt batter ies
or worn out tires .
• Undeployed airbag modules and pretensioners might be classi ­
fied as Pe rchlorate Mate rial -specia l handl ing may apply, see
www .dtsc.ca.gov/ hazardouswaste/perchlora te. W hen t he veh icle or
parts of the restraint system including airbag modu les safety belts
w ith pretens ione rs are sc rapped, all appl icab le laws and regu la ­
tions must be observed. Your authorized Audi dea ler is familiar with

perform this service for you. •
