Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)
(USA models )/ (Canada models)
The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (M IU is part of the On-Board Diag ­
nostic (OBD Ill system . The symbo l lights up when the ignition is
turned on and wi ll turn off after the engine has started and has
sett led at constant id le speed. This indicates that the MIL is working
proper ly .
The warning light il luminates when there is a malfunction in the
engine electronic system. Contact your authorized Audi dealer and have the malfunction corrected.

High beam @:D
The ~Dwarning/ indicato r light illuminates when the h igh beams are
on or when you use the headlight flasher. For more information
about using the h ig h beams , see :::::,
page 57. •
Turn signals ¢ Q
The indicator light flashes when you use ei ther turn
signal.
Whenever you use the left¢ or the right ¢ turn signal, the ind icator
light flashes . When you use the emergency flasher, both indicator
lights flash .
If one of the turn signal light bulbs burn out, the turn signal will
flash twice as fast as no rma l.•
Cruise control
CRUISE (USA models) / 0 (Canada models)
The CRUISE warning/indicator light illuminates when the cruise
control is activated. •
Airbag system !_J·
This warning/indicator light monitors the airbag and the
tensioner systems.
The ! .!r warning light illuminates for a few seconds each time you
switch on the ignition.
If the
! !r warning light does not go out, or if it illuminates whi le you
are driving, or if it starts to flash, then there is a ma lfunction some ­
where in the system . If the light does not illuminate when you
switch on the ignition, this also means there is a malfunction.
& WARNING
If you ha ve a malfunction in the a irbag sy stem , cont act your autho­
rized Audi dealer immedi ately. Otherwi se the airba g or the belt
ten sioner may not wor k properl y in an acci dent. •
Generator 0
This warning/indicator light detects a malfunction in the
generator or in the vehicle's electrical system .
The O warning/indicator light illuminates when you switch on the
ignition and must go out after the engine has started.
If the
O warning/indicator light il luminates while you are driving,
you shou ld co ntact your authori zed Aud i dealer . Since the veh icle
battery is discharging, you should switch off any unnecessary elec­
trical consumers ( for example, the air conditioner) .•

On-Board Diagnostics monitors the components of your emission
control system . Each controlled component in your engine system
has been assigned a code. In case of a malfunction , the component
will be identified and the fault stored as a code in the control
module memory .
The Mil lamp may also illuminate if there is a leak in the on-board
fuel vapor recovery system . If the light illuminates after a refuelling,
pull off the road and stop the vehicle, then check that the fuel filler
cap is properly closed
=> page 220 .
In order to make an accurate diagnosis, the stored data can only be
displayed using special diagnostic equipment (generic scan tool for
OBDl.
In order to connect the special diagnostic equipment, push the plug
into the Data Link Connector (DLC). The DLC is located to the right of
the engine hood re lease lever=> fig. 10.
Your authorized Audi dealer or a qualified service station can inter ­
pret the code and perform the necessary repair. •

Driver information display
Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) (USA
models)/ (Canada models)
The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIU in the instrument cluster
=> page 11, fig . 5 is part of the On-Board Diagnostic (OBD II) system .
The warning/indicator light illuminates when the ignition is
switched on and goes out after the engine starts and the idle has
stabilized. This indicates that the Mil is working properly .
If the light does not go out after the engine is started, or illuminates
while you are driving, a ma lfunction may exist in the engine system.
If the light illuminates, the catalytic converter could be damaged.
Continue driving
with reduced power (avoiding sustained high
speeds and/or rapid accelerations) and have the condition
corrected . Contact your authorized Audi dealer.
If the light illuminates , the electronic speed limiter may also be
malfunctioning. For more information=>
page 21, "Electronic speed
limiter".
An improperly closed fuel filler cap may also cause the MIL light to
illuminate
=> page 220. •
Electronic speed limiter
Your vehicle may be factory equipped with tires that are rated for a
maximum speed of 130 mph (210 km/h) . This is less than the
maximum speed of your vehicle. To reduce the risk of sudden tire
failure and loss of control if the vehicle is operated at excessive
speeds, yo ur vehicle also has an electronic speed limiter. The elec­
tronic speed limiter prevents your vehicle from going faster than the
tire speed rating. For more information

If the engine control unit receives faulty vehicle roadspeed signals,
the Malfun cti on Indicator Light (MIU will illuminate . If this
occurs, contact the nearest authori zed Audi dealer for assistance. _.,

Driver information display
[ i ] Tips
• The engine oil p re ss ure symbol 9:::r. is not an indicator for a low
engine oil level. Do not rely on it . In stead , check the oil level in your
engine at regular interval s, preferably each time you refuel , and
alway s before going on a l ong trip.
• The yellow oil level warning indication · require s oil refill or
workshop service w ithout delay . Do not wait until the red oil pres­
s ure warning symbol
9:::r. s tarts to flash before you respond to the
l ow oil level warning . By then , yo ur engine may already have
s uffered serious damage. •
Fuel supply too low f
When the symbol illuminates, t his mea ns there are about 2.6
gallons (10 liters) of fuel left in the fuel tank. Time to refuel!

not exceed the va lue d isplayed in the driver information system, for
exam ple when downshifting.

to have the malfunction repaired. •

Diesel particulate filter clogged
Particulate filter ! See owner's manual
If the indicator light in the instrument c luster comes on, the
diesel particulate fi lte r has become blocked with soot as the resul t
of constant short -distance driving . When the symbol illumi -
nates, you can alte r yo ur driving style to assist the filter self­
clean ing process. Drive for app roxi mately 15 m inutes in 4th or 5th
gea r (automatic transmission with the selector lever in the S posi ­
t ion) at a minimum s peed of 37 mph (60 km/h) and an e ngine speed
of approximately 2 ,000 R PM . T he temperature increase that wil l
r esu lt from this ca n burn o ff the soot in the fil te r. The symbo l w ill
switc h off when the cleaning is successful.
I f the sy mbo l d oes not swi tch off, see you r aut hor ized deale r or
other qua lif ied workshop to have the prob lem correc ted .
As long as the indicator light remains on (diesel particulate filter
plugged), you can e xpect i ncreased fue l co nsu mption a nd possibly
a lso a loss of engine performance.
A message may a lso be displayed in the ins tru me nt cluste r
informing you or prompting necessary act ion .

& WARNING
Always adapt your speed to the current weather, road and traffic
conditions. You should never disobey traffic laws in order to follow
driving recommendation s. •

needles) comes on when you switch on the ignition and the

headlights are off.
Be aware of the f ollowi ng differe nce betwee n
models built to US or Canadian specifications :
• USA model s: illumination of the instrument cluster (gauges and
needles ), dash and center console around the gearshift leve r is
contr olled by a light sensor l ocated in the instrument panel. The i
nstrument panel illumination will autom ati cally be come dimmer
as the daylight fades away and eventually will go out completely
when out side light i s very low . Thi s is to rem ind you , the dri ver , to
sw itch on the headlights before it gets too dark.
• Canada models : in strument panel illumin ation will sta y bri ght
regardle ss of the inten sity of amb ient light . Alway s be aware of
c hange s in outside light conditions while you are d riving . Re spond
in time to fading dayl ight by turning the light switch to position
tD
(or" AUTO" if your car is equipped with this feature) to turn on your
he adl ights. •
Emergency flasher ~
The emergency flasher makes other motorists aware that
you or your vehicle are in an emergency situation.

Automatic dimming function
The au tomat ic dim ming f uncti on is act iva ted every tim e th e ignit ion
i s tur ned on . The green indi cator light is lit to i ndicate auto dimming
i s ac tive.
When d immin g is activat ed, the inside m irror will darken automati­
cally in re spo nse to th e am ount of li ght striki ng the m irror (suc h as
headlights from rearward approachin g vehicles). Even in dimm ing
mod e, the m irror su rface turns br ig ht whe n :

& WARNING
Broken glass of automatic dimming mirror can cause electrolyte
fluid leakage . Electrolyte fluid can irritate skin , eyes , and respira ­
tory system .
• Repeated or prolonged exposure to electrolyte can cause irrita ­
tion to the respiratory system, especially among people with asthma or other respiratory conditions . Get fresh air immediately
by leaving the vehicle or , if that is not possible, open windows and
doors all the way.
• If electrolyte gets into the eyes , flush them thoroughly with
large amounts of clean water for at least 15 minutes; medical
attention is recommended .
• If electrolyte contacts skin, flush affected area with clean water
for at least 15 minutes and then wash affected area with soap and

water; medical attention is recommended . Thoroughly wash
affected clothing and shoes before reuse .
• If swallowed and person is conscious , rinse mouth with water
for at least 15 minutes . Do not induce vomiting unless instructed
to do so by med ical professional. Get medical attention immedi­
ately.

Depending on outside tempera ture and v ehic le speed, the mirror
surfaces are heated until the ignition is swi tched off -even if the

vehic les .

• Curved mirro r surfaces (convex or spherica l* ) increase your fie ld
of view. Remember that vehicles or other objects will appear smaller
and far ther away than when seen in a flat mirror. If you use th is
mirror to estimate distances of fo llowing vehic les when changing
lanes, you cou ld estimate incorrectly and cause an accident .
[ i ] Tips
If the re shoul d be a malfunctio n in the electrical system, yo u ca n
still adjust the outside mirrors by pressing the edge of the mirror .•

Automatic dimming for outside mirrors
The outside mirr ors are dimmed t ogether wi th the automatic
dimming of the inside mirror. When the ignition is switched on , the
mir ro rs darken automat ically depending on the light s triking the m
(e.g . headlights from the rear) .
When the interior lighting is switched on and when reverse gear is engaged, the mir rors are switched back to their o riginal b rightness
(not dimmed).
& WARNING

Climate controls
Description
The air conditioner is fully automatic and is designed to
maintain a comfortable and uniform climate inside the
vehicle.
We recomme nd the following s ettings:
- Select and set a temperature between 64
°F (+22 °C) and
84 °F (+28 °C).
- Press the !AUTO
I button.
With this setting, you attain maximum comfort in the least amount
of time . Change this set ting, as desired, to mee t your pe rsonal
needs.
The climate controls are a combination of heating, venti lation and
cooling systems, which automatica lly reduce humidity and coo l the
air inside your vehic le .
The air temperature, air flow and air distribution are automatically
regu lated to achieve and maintain the desired passenger compart ­
ment temperature as quick ly as possible.
The system automatically compensates for changes in the outside
temperature and for the intensity of the sun light entering the
vehic le. We recomme nd you use the
Automati c mode~ page 99for
year -round comfort.
P lease note the following :
Turn on the air conditioner to reduce humidity in the vehic le. This
a lso prevent the window s from fogging up. When the outside temperature is high and the air is very humid,
c
ondensat ion from the evaporator may drip under the vehicle . T his
is normal and does not indicate a leak.
I f the outside temperature is low, the fan normally only switches to
a higher speed once the engine coola nt has war med u p sufficiently .
T he air conditioner temporarily sw itches off when you drive off from
a standstill using fu ll throttle to save engine power.
The comp ressor also swi tches off if the coolant temperatu re is to o
high so that the engine can be adequate ly cooled under extreme
lo ads .
Air pollutants filt er
The air po llutants fi lter (a combined partic le filter and activated
charcoal fi lter) reduces or eliminates outside air pollution (dust, or
p ollen) from en ter ing the vehic le .
The air po llutants fi lter must be changed at the intervals specified
in your Warranty
& Maintenance bo oklet, so that the ai r conditioner
can proper ly work.
I f you drive your vehicle in an area with high air pol lution, the filter
may need to be changed m ore freque ntly tha n specified in your
Audi Warranty
& Maintenance booklet. If in doubt, ask your autho­
r iz ed Aud i Service Adviso r fo r a dvice .
