Emergency OFF function
If necessary, the en gine can be sw itched off w ith the se lec tor lever in
the
R, Dor S positions . To do so, step on the brake pedal and press
and hold t he [STOP) but ton (veh icle speed mus t be less than
6 mph
/ 10 km/h .
& WARNING
• Never turn off the engine until the vehicle has come to a
c omplete stop.
• The brake booster and servotronic only work when the engine
i s running. With the ignition turned off , you have to apply more
force when steering or b raking. Since you cannot steer and stop
normally, this can lead to accident s and seriou s injuries.
• For safety rea sons , you should always park your vehicle with
the selector lever in P. Otherwi se, the vehicle could inadvertently
roll away.
• After the engine has been switched off, the radiator fan can
continue to
run for up to 10 minutes -even with the ignition
switched off . It can al so swit ch on again after some time if the
coolant temperature r ises as the result of a heat buildup or if the
engine i s hot and the engine compartment is additionally he ated
by the sun's rays.

If the eng ine has bee n under heavy load for an extended period, heat
builds up in the engine compartment after the engine is switched off
- there is a risk of damaging the eng ine. Allow the engine to run at idle
for abo ut 2 min utes befo re switching it off .•

Driver messages in the instrument cluster
display
If a function is not present, a driver message appears.
No key identified
This message appears when the [START] button is pressed if there is
no master key inside the vehicle or if the system does not recognize
it. For example, the master key cannot be recognized if it is covered
by an object (e.g. aluminum brief case) which
screens the radio
signal. Electronic devices such as cell phones can also interfere with
the radio signal.
Press brake pedal to start engine
This message appears if you press the I ST ART ] button to start the
engine and do not depress the brake pedal. The engine can only be
started if the brake pedal is depressed.
Engage Nor P to start engine
This message appears when the engine is started if the selector lever
for the automatic transmission is not in the P or N position . The
engine can only be started with the selector in these positions.
Key not in vehicle
This message appears along with the ' symbol if the master key is
removed from the vehicle with the engine running . It is intended to
remind you (e.g. when changing drivers) not to continue the journey
without the master key.
If the master key is no longer in the vehicle, you cannot switch off the
ignition after stopping the engine and you also cannot start the
engine again. Moreover, you cannot lock the vehicle from the outside
with the key.

Shift to P otherwise vehicle can roll away. Doors do not lock if you
are not in P.
This message appears for safety reasons along with a warning buzzer
if the selector lever for the automatic transmission is not in the P
position when the ignition is switched off with the
[STOP] button and
the driver's door is opened. Move the selector lever to the P position,
otherwise the vehicle is not secured against rolling away. You also
cannot lock the vehicle using the locking button on the door handle
or using the remote key.
To engage steering lock, press and hold STOP button
This message appears for safety reasons if the engine and the ignition
have been switched off by pressing the
[STOP] button once, and then
the driver's door is opened. In this instance, the steering is not
locked. The steering is locked:
• If you press the
[STOP] button again for more than 1 second.
• If you close the driver's door and lock your vehicle from the
outside. •
Parking brake

The parking brake replaces the handbrake.

Cruise control
Switching the system on
The cruise control sys te m mak es it possibl e to d rive at a

The disp lay=> fig. 127 will show the se t speed . The d isplay may va ry
depending on the type of display in your vehicle. The indicator light
CRUISE (US mode l)/ 0 (Ca nadian mod el) will a lso ligh t up in t he
i n strum ent cluste r.
& WARNING
• Always pay attention to traffic even when the cruise control is
switched on. You are always responsible for your speed and the
di stan ce between your vehicle and other vehicle s.
• For safety reasons , the cruise control should not be used in the
city, in stop-and -go traffic, on twisting roads and when road
conditions are poor (such as ice , fog, gravel , heavy rain and hydro­
planing) -risk of accident.
• Turn off the cruise control temporarily when entering turn
lanes , highway exit lane s or in construction zone s.
• Please note that inadvertently " re sting" you r foot on the accel­
erator pedal causes the cruise control not to brake. This is because
the cruise control is overridden by the driver's acceleration .
• Never use the cruise control when driving off-road or on
unpaved roads . The Cruise control is intended for use only when
the vehicle is being operated on paved roads, and is not suitable
for use off-road or on unpaved roads.

The cruise control cannot ma inta in a constant speed when d riving
dow nhill. The ve hicl e will accele rate unde r its own we igh t. D ownshift
to a Lower gear or use the brakes to slow down .•
Changing speed
- Press lever in the 0 or O d ire ct ion=> fig. 1 26 to i ncrease
or decre as e your s peed.
- Release the lever to save that s peed.

How does Adaptive Cruise Control work?
Vehicles traveling ahead ore detected with the aid of a
radar sensor.

Adaptive Cruise Control uses a radar sensor in the front of the vehicle
=>
page 136, fig. 129 . The system has limitations=> page 147.
Things that are not moving in your lane and in your direction of travel
w ill not be detected. The sensor measures the distance to reflective
surfaces that must have a certain size. The system responds only
after the distance measurement has been made . If a measurement is
not possible, the system cannot respond and will not react to a
vehicle or someth ing else up ahead.
Open road
When the road is clear, the Adaptive Cru ise Control works like cruise
control. It maintains a constant target speed specified by the driver .
Driving in traffic
If a slower veh icle driv ing ahead is detected, the Adaptive Cruise
Control decelerates (within the limits of the system)=>
page 146,
"Driver intervention prompt" and => page 147, "System limitations"
to its speed and after adjusting, tries to ma inta in the set distance
from the vehicle ahead. The vehicle may temporarily drive slower
than the set speed whi le adjusting=>

page 134.
If the vehicle in front accelerates, Adaptive Cruise Control also accel­
erates up to the speed that you have set.
If the vehicle ahead slows to a stop, ACC w ill slow your vehicle down
and to a complete stop if this is possible within the system's limits
and capabilities . ACC will not make an emergency stop. The text
message
ACC off: manual control! appears in the instrument cluster
display . Once the vehicle stops, you must depress the brake pedal to
prevent the veh icle from moving forward or "creeping" . Depressing
the brake pedal turns off ACC. When the vehicle ahead accelerates
you can reactivate ACC =>
page 139, as soon as your vehicle has
reached a speed of 1 mph (2 km/h) .
Situations requiring driver intervention
In some situations you will have to use the footbrake to slow the
vehicle down in order to keep a safe distance from vehicle in front of
you or to avoid a rear-end collision. In this situation, a symbol
appears and a warning tone sounds=>
page 146.
Passing another vehicle
If you move into the passing lane and no vehicle is detected ahead,
the Adaptive Cruise Control accelerates to the speed you have set and
maintains it.
Overriding ACC
You can increase your speed at any time by stepping on the acceler ­
ator pedal. After you release the accelerator pedal, the system
adjusts back down to the speed you previously set.
Reduc ing stopping distance
If the radar sensor detects that the distance to the vehicle ahead is
less than defined minimum distance, the brakes are automatically
prepared for emergency braking by the drive r. The brake pads are
moved very close to the brake discs withou t actually bra king the
vehicle. This brake assistant feature reacts more quickly to the driver's braking, and also works when Adaptive Cruise Control is off.
The stopping d istance is reduced as a result of this advance brake .,_

How is the speed stored?

With the sys tem sw itch ed on the speed is stored as follows:
- Drive at the speed you want .
- Press the [SET] button =>
page 138, fig. 131 to store the
desired speed.
After the ! SET I button is released, the current speed is stored and
maintained . If you are dr iving at a speed below 20 mph (30 km/h),
t he min imum speed setting of 20 mph (30 km/h) wi ll be set.
The saved speed is now shown in the LED display in the speedometer
by one or two illumina ted red light diodes~

time, the saved speed is also shown for a short time in the Informa·
tion line~

- Press the lever upwards
0 and hold it. As long as you hold
the control switch down, the light diode display in the
speedometer LED display in the speedometer moves
forward and the speed is increased .
Reducing speed
- Press the lever briefly downwards Q. USA models : the
speed decreases by 2 .5 mph . Canada models: speed will
decrease by one mark on the speedometer scale . _,,.

- Press the lev er downwards Q and hold it. As long as you
hold the control switch down, the li ght diode d isplay in the
speedo meter LED d isplay moves bac kward and the speed
is reduced .
After releasing t he co ntro l switch, the system regulates the speed to
the val ue just set .
After each adjustment, the new ly-set speed is shown for a short time
in the Information line=>
page 145.

Improper use of th e Adaptive Cruis e Control features and inatten­
tion can lead to an accident causing serious personal injury.
• It is dangerous to use the "RESUM E" feature when the previ­
ously set speed is too high fo r existing road, traffic or weather
c onditions .
