T he tether anchors for the rear seating positions are located in

A tether is a s traight or V -sha ped strap that attaches the top part o f
a ch ild restraint to specia l anchorage points in the vehicle .
The purp ose of th e tether is to redu ce th e forward move ment of th e
child restraint in a crash, in order to help reduce the risk of head
injury that co uld be cause d by strik ing the vehicle in te rio r.

m ance req uir ements make a te th er neces sary on most new child
safety seats .
& WARNING
Improper installation of child restraints will increase the risk of
injury and death in a crash .
• Always follow the instructions prov ided by the manufacturer of
the child restraint you intend to install in your Audi .
• Improper use of child restraint anchors (including tether
anchors ) can lead to injury in a collision . The anchors are designed
to withstand only those loads imposed by correctly fitted child
restraints .
• Never mount two child restraint systems on one LATCH lower
anchor point .
• Never attach two child restraint systems to one tether strap or
tether anchorage.
• Never attach a tether strap to a tie -down hook in the luggage
compartment .
• Never use child restraint tether anchorages to secure safety
belts or other kinds of occupant restraints .
• Never secure or attach any luggage or other items to the LATCH
lower anchorages or to the tether anchors .
• If a tether or other strap is u sed to attach a child restraint to the
front passenger seat, make sure that it is not so tight, that it
causes the weight -sensing mat to measure more weight than is
actually on the seat .
• The heavier weight registered can make the Advanced Airbag
System work as though an adult were on the seat and deploy the
Advanced Airbag when it must be suppressed causing serious or even fatal injury to the child .
• If you must install a rearward facing child safety seat on the
front passenger seat because of exceptional circumstances and
the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light does not come on and stay on, .,

Driving with a trailer
General information
Your Audi was designed primarily for passenger transpor­
tation.
If you plan to tow a trailer, please remember that the additional load
wi ll affect durability , economy and performance.
Trai ler towing not on ly p laces more stress on the vehicle, it a lso ca lls
for more concentration from the driver.
For this reason, always fol low the operating and driving instructions
provided and use common sense. •
Technical requirements
Traile r hit ch
Use a weight -carrying hitch conforming to the gross trailer weight.
The hitch must be suitab le for your vehicle and tra iler and must be
mounted secure ly on the vehicle's chassis at a
technically sound
location . Use only a trailer hitch with a removable ball mount.
Always check with the trai ler hitch manufacturer to make sure that
you are using the correct hitch.
D o not u se a b umper hit ch .
The hitch must be installed in such a way that it does not interfere
w ith the impact-absorbing bumper system . No modifications
should be made to the vehicle exhaust and brake systems . From
time to time, check that all hitch mount ing bolts remain securely
fastened.
When you are not towing a trailer, remove the trailer hitch ball
mount. This prevents the hitch from causing damage should your
vehic le be struck from behind =:> & .
Tra iler br akes
If your trailer is equipped with a braking system, check to be sure
that it conforms to al l regu lations.
T he trailer hydraulic brake system must not be directly connected to
the vehicle's hydraulic brake system=:>& .

Always use safety chai ns between y our vehicle and the trailer .
Traile r lights
Trai ler lights mus t meet all regulations. Be su re to check with your
authori zed Audi dealer for correct wiring, switches, and relays .
Mirrors
If you are unable to see the traffic behind you using the regu lar
outside mirrors, then you
must instal l extended m irrors. It is impor ­
tant that you
always have to the rear .

Trailer load d is trib ut ion
Be sure the load in the trailer is held securely in place to prevent it
from shifting forward, backward or sideways.

En gin e c ool ing syst em
Towing a trailer makes the engine work harder. It is important that
the cooling system 's performance is up to the additiona l load. Make
sure that the cooling system has enough flu id.
Ti re press ure
When towing a trailer, inflate the tires of your vehicle to the cold tire
pressure listed under "Full load" on the labe l located either on the
driver's side B-pillar (visible when the door is open} or inside the fuel
filler flap . Inflate trailer tires to trai ler and tire manufacturers' spec ­
ifications.
Ligh ts
The headlight settings should be checked with the trailer attached
before driving off . Check to make sure both vehicle and trailer lights
are working properly .
Safe ty c hain s
Be sure trailer safety chains are properly connected from the trailer
to the hitch on the vehicle. Leave enough slack in the chains to
permit turning corners. When you install safety chains, make sure
they will not drag on the road when you are driving.
The chains should cross under the trailer tongue to prevent it from dropping in case of separation from the hitch.

Driving with a trailer always requires extra care and
consideration.
To obtain the best possible handling of veh icle and trailer,
please note t he following :
Do not tow a loaded trailer when your car itself is not
loaded .
- Be especia lly careful when passing other vehicles .
Observe speed l imits .
Do not drive at the maximum permissible speed.
Always apply brakes early.
Monitor the temperature gauge.
W eight distrib utio n
Towing a loaded trailer with an empty car results in a h ighly
unstable distribution of weight . If this cannot be avoided, drive at
very low speeds only to avoid the risk of losing steering control.
A "balanced" rig is easier to operate and control. This means that
t he tow vehicle should be loaded to the extent possible and permis ­
sible, while keeping the trailer as light as possib le under the circum ­
stances . Whenever possible, transfer some cargo to the luggage
compartment of the tow vehicle whi le observing tongue load
requirements and vehicle loading considerations.
S pee d
The higher the speed, the more difficu lt it becomes for the d river to
control the rig. Do not drive at the maximum permissible speed.
Reduce your speed even more if load, weather or wind conditions
are unfavorable -particularly when going downhill .
Reduce vehicle speed

Closing the engine hood
-Pull the hood down until the pressure from the struts is
reduced .
- Let the hood
drop down and latch in place. Do not try to
push it shut;
it may fail to engage => &.
& WARNING
A hood that is not completely latched could fly up and block your
view while driving.
• When you close the engine hood, check it to make sure the
safety catch has properly engaged. The hood should be flush with
the surrounding vehicle body parts.
• If you notice while driving that the hood is not secured prop­
erly, stop at once and close it. •
Working in the engine compartment
Be especially careful whenever you work in the engine
compartment.
Whenever you must perform any work in the engine compartment,
for example checking and filling different fluids, there is a risk of injury, burns and accidents. To prevent personal injury always
observe the following WARNINGS. The engine compartment of any
vehicle is a hazardous area

& WARNING
To help avoid injury, before you check anything under the hood :
• Turn off the engine.
• Remove the ignition key.
• Apply the parking brake .

• Move selector lever of automatic transmission to "P" (Park);
put manual transmission in Neutral .
• Always let the engine cool down. Hot components will burn
skin on contact.
• To reduce the risk of being burned, never open the hood if you
see or hear steam or coolant escaping from the engine compart­
ment. Wait until no steam or coolant can be seen or heard before
carefully opening the hood .
• Keep children away from the engine compartment.
• Never spill fluids on hot engine components . They can cause a
fire.
• Never touch the radiator fan. The auxiliary electric fan is
temperature controlled and can switch on suddenly.
• Never open the coolant reservoir cap when the engine is still
warm. The coolant system is pressurized and hot coolant could
spray out.
• Protect your face, hands and arm from steam or hot engine
coolant by placing a thick rag over the cap when you open the
coolant reservoir.
• If work on the fuel system or the electrical system is necessary:
- Always disconnect the battery.
- Never smoke or work near heaters or open flames. Fluids in
the engine compartment could start a fire .
- Keep an approved fire extinguisher immediately available.
• To avoid electrical shock and personal injury while the engine
is running or being started, never touch :
- Ignition cables
- Other components of the high voltage electronic ignition
system.
• If you must perform a check or repair with the engine running: ..,

Carefully top off with the appropriate oil in 0.5 liter doses.
- Screw the cap back on the filling hole and close the
engine hood.
- Check the oil level again after two minutes=>
page 275.

& WARNING
• While topping off, the oil must not come in contact with hot
engine parts -fire hazard!
• The oil filler cap must be properly secured to prevent oil from
being sprayed on the hot engine and exhaust system when the
engine is running -fire hazard!
• If your skin has come in contact with the engine oil, you must
subsequently cleanse it thoroughly.
0 Note
• Check the oil level using the radio or MMI*. If the message Please
reduce oil level appears, contact your authorized Audi dealer or
other qualified workshop to have excess oil extracted if necessary.
• Audi does not recommend the use of oil additives. They may
damage the engine and adversely affect your New Vehicle Warranty.
'i> For the sake of the environment
• Under no circumstances can the oil come in contact with the
sewage network or the soil.
• Observe and follow legal regulations when disposing of empty
oil containers. •
Changing the engine oil
We recommend that have your oil changed by an autho­
rized Audi dealer or a qualified service station.
Before you check anything in the engine compartment, always read
and heed all WARNINGS=>
& in "Working in the engine compart­
ment" on
page 271.
The engine oil must be changed according to the intervals specified
in your Warranty
& Maintenance booklet. This is very important
because the lubricating properties of oil diminish gradually during
normal vehicle use.
Under some circumstances the engine oil should be changed more
frequently. Change oil more often if you drive mostly short
distances, operate the vehicle in dusty areas or under predomi­
nantly stop-and-go traffic conditions, or have your vehicle where
temperatures remain below freezing for extended periods.
Detergent additives in the oil will make fresh oil look dark after the
engine has been running for a short time. This is normal and is not
a reason to change the oil more often than recommended.
Because of the problem of proper disposal, along with the special
tools and necessary expertise required, we strongly recommend
that you have your oil changed by an authorized Audi dealer or a
qualified service station .
If you choose to change your oil yourself, please note the following
important information:

To reduce the risk of personal injury if you must change the engine
oil in your vehicle yourself:
• Wear eye protection.
• To reduce the risk of burns from hot engine oil, let the engine
cool down to the touch.

U.S. DOT Tire Identification Number (TIN ) and tire
manufacture date
T his is the tire's "seria l number". It begins with the letters "DOT"
and indicates that the tire meets all federal standards. The next two
numbers or letters indicate the plant where it was manufactured,
and the last four numbers represent the week and year of manufac ­
ture. For example, the numbers 2209 mean that the tire was
produced in the 22nd week of 2009. The other numbers are
marketing codes that may or may not be used by the tire manufac­
turer. This information is used to contact consumers if a tire defect
requires a recall.
Audi Original tire
Tires with the identification "AO" or "RO" have been specially
matched with your Audi. We recommend using only these tires
because they meet the highest standards regarding safety and
driving characteristics when used correctly. Your authorized Audi
dealer will gladly prov ide you with more information.
Tire ply composition and materials used
The number of plies indicates the number of layers of rubber-coated
fabric in the tire. In general, the greater the number of plies, the
more weight a tire can support . Tire manufacturers also must indi­
cate the materia ls in the tire, which include steel, nylon, polyester,
and others.
Maximum Load Rating
This number indicates the maximum load in kilograms and pounds
that can be carried by the tire.
Tire qual ity grading for treadwear , traction, and
temperature resistance
Tread wear, traction and temperature grades=> page 303.
Maximum Permissible Inflation Pressure
This number is the greatest amount of air pressure that should ever
be put in the tire under normal driving conditions.
Replacing tires or rims on vehicles equipped with tire
pressure monitoring system*
The wheels on your vehicle are equipped with a sensor which
constantly monitors the air pressure inside the tire, and then trans ­
mits this information to the tire pressure monitoring system*. If you
are going to replace the wheel rims on your vehic le, make sure the
new rims also have these sensors. The sensors must be compatible
with the tire pressure monitoring system* on your vehic le.
If you instal l rims, which do not have the sensors, or have sensors
which are not compatible, then the tire pressure monitoring
system* wil l not work properly. In this case, the tire pressure moni ­
toring system* would not be able to monitor the tire pressure or
warn you if it is necessary .
• The battery inside of the tire pressure sensor has a limited
service life .
• Always drive with the valve stem caps secure ly mounted. We
recommend using factory instal led valve stem caps. Ask your autho ­
rized Audi dea ler to replace lost valve stem caps.
The installation of replacement tires with steel cord body p lies in
the tire sidewall may cause malfunction of the tire pressure moni­
toring system*, and is not recommended (cord material information
in molded on the tire sidewall).
Always check your tire pressure monitoring system* indicator after
replacing one or more tires on your vehic le. If the tire pressure
monitoring system* indicator flashes, or is on, your system is not
working properly. Your replacement tire might be incompatible with
your tire pressure monitoring system*, or some component of the
t ire pressure monitoring system* may be damaged. .._

than 0.53 inch (13 .5 mm), including the loc k.

Using the wrong snow chains for your vehicle or installing them
incorrectly can increase the risk of loss of control leading to

• Snow chains are available in different sizes. Always make sure
to follow the instructions provided by the snow chain manufac ­
turer.
• When driving with snow chains never drive faster than the
speed permitted for your specific snow chains.
• Always observe local regulations .

Snow chains, which come into direct contact with the wheel rim,

from the snow chain manufacturer when doing so.

& WARNING
Improperly tightened or mainta ined wheel bolts can become loose
causing loss of control , a collision and serious personal injury .
• Always keep the wheel bolts and the threads in the wheel hubs
clean so the wheel bolts can turn easily and be properly tightened.
• Never grease or oil the wheel bolts and the threads in the wheel
hubs . They can become loose while driving if greased or oiled ,
even if tightened to the specified torque .
• Only use wheel bolts that belong to the rim being installed .
• Never use different wheels bolt s on your vehicle.

• Never use the screw driver hex head to tighten wheel bolts ,
si nce the bolts cannot attain the necessary tightening torque if
you u se the hex head , potentially causing an accident.
• The factory -supplied ja ck is intended only for your vehicle
model. Under no circumstances should it be used to lift heavy
vehicles or other loads ; you risk injuring yourself .
• Never start the engine when the vehicle is raised , which could
cau se an accident.
• Support the vehicle securely with appropriate stands if work is
to be performed underneath the vehi cle ; otherwise , there is a
potential ris k for injury . •

Using the spare tire (compact spare tire )
The compact spare tire is only intended fo r em ergencies until you
ca n r each a repa ir shop . Rep la ce it as quick ly as possible with a stan ­
dard whee l and tire.
T here are some restric tions on the use of the compact spa re tire .
The compact spare tire has been designed specifically for your type of vehic le. It must not be swapped with a compact spare tire from
another type of vehicle .
Snow chains
For technical reasons , the use of snow chains on th e compact spare
t ir e is
not permitted.
If you do have to drive with snow cha ins and a front t ire fails, mou nt
the spar e wheel with tir e instead of a rear tire. Install the snow
chains o n th e rear tire a nd use it to replace the defec tive fro nt tire . ._
