• Failure to heed warning lights and other important vehicle
information may result in serious personal injury or vehicle
damage .
• Whenever stalled or stopped for repair, move the vehicle a safe
distance off the road, stop the engine, and turn on the emergency
flasher =>

• The engine compartment of any motor vehicle is a potentially
hazardous area. Before you check anything in the engine compart­
ment, stop the engine and let it cool down . Always exercise
extreme caution when working under the hood =>

Many functions are monitored by the Auto-Check system
=>
page 27. Malfunctions or faults will be identified either with a red
symbol (priority 1 -Danger!) or with a yellow symbol (priority 2 -
Warning). •

Dynamic steering c
If the indicator light illuminates when switching on the ignition
and goes out when the engine starts, dynamic steering is activated.
If the indicator light '.,,; illuminates after the engine starts, a system
malfunction has occurred. You can continue to drive carefully at a
reduced speed to a qualified workshop. Steering can be more diffi­
cult or sensitive than usual. The steering wheel may also be at an
angle when driving straight.

Have the dynamic steering system malfunction repaired as soon
as possible by an authorized Audi dealer or any qualified work­
shop -risk of accident!
[ i] Tips
• If the indicator light 6 flashes, dynamic steering is being re­
initialized. The driver information system display shows the words
"Dynamic steering: initialization"=>
page 33.
• The dynamic steering stability systems are not available in the
event of a system malfunction. •
Electronic power control r.
This warning/indicator light monitors the electronic
power control.
The warning/indicator light (Electronic Power Control) illumi-
nates when you turn on the ignition as a function check.
[ i] Tips
If this warning/indicator light illuminates while you are driving, then
there is a malfunction in the engine electronics . Have the malfunc­
tion corrected as soon as possible by your authorized Audi dealer or
qualified workshop. •
Electronic stabilization program (ESP) If the ~ indicator lamp blinks while driving, the ESP or ASR (Anti­
Slip Regulation) is actively regulating.
If the indicator lamp illuminates, the system has switched the
ESP off. In this case, you can switch the ignition off and then on to .,_

On the road -

& WARNING
If a gear or a drive range (automatic transmission) is engaged with
the vehicle stationary and the engine running, you must in no
instance accelerate or release the clutch carelessly . Otherwise the
vehicle will start to move immediately -risk of an accident.
0 Note
If the symbol (CD) in the display or the indicator light BRAKE (USA
models)/ {(i)) (Canada models) in the instrument cluster flashes, there
is a malfunction in the brake system. By pressing the
[SET] button,
you can bring up a driver message which explains the malfunction in more detail. If the driver message
Parking brake! appears, there
is an operating malfunction in the parking brake which you should
have repaired immediately by an authorized Audi dealer or other
qualified workshop ~

[ i] Tips
• You can apply the parking brake at any time -even with the igni ­
tion turned off. The ignition must be turned on in order to release
the parking brake.
• Occasional noises when the parking brake is applied and
released are normal and are not a cause for concern.
• When the vehicle is parked, the parking brake goes through a
self -test cycle at regular intervals. Any associated noises are
normal. •
Parking
Various rules apply to prevent the parked vehicle from
rolling away accidentally.
Parking
- Stop the vehicle with the foot brake.
Controls and equip ­
ment
- Pull the switch to apply the parking brake.
- Automatic transmission*: Move the selector lever to
P.
- Turn the engine off=:,& .
- Manual transmission: Shift into 1st gear.
In addition on inclines and grades
-Turn the steering wheel so that your vehicle will roll
against the curb in case it should start to move.
& WARNING
• When you leave your vehicle -even if only briefly -always
remove the ignition key. This applies particularly when children
remain in the vehicle. Otherwise the children could start the
engine, release the parking brake or operate electrical equipment
(e.g. power windows). There is the risk of an accident.
• When the vehicle is locked, no one -particularly not children
should remain in the vehicle. Locked doors make it more difficult
for emergency workers to get into the vehicle -putting lives at
risk. •
Starting from rest
The starting assist function ensures that the parking
brake is released automatically upon starting.
Stopping and applying parking brake
-Pull the switch to apply the parking brake.

Speed and distance control system

Description
The adaptive cruise control driver assistance program is
a combined speed and distance control system.

Any speed between about 20 mph (30 km/h) and about 95 mph
(150 km/h) can be set and held with the adaptive cruise control. The
system also regulates a pre-set distance from the vehicle ahead
within the limits of the system described.
Driving can be more relaxed, particularly on long trips on interstates
or on other highways that are generally straight.
How does it work?
You can operate the adaptive cruise control using the lever on the
steering wheel column:::::,
page 121, "How is the speed stored?" and
~ page 123, "How is the distance (time interval) set?".
Driver information
Important information is brought up in the speedometer and in the
instrument cluster display as the vehicle is being driven
=:> page 124, "Driver information".
What is important for you to know
The adaptive cruise control is set with system -specified limits, that
is, as a driver, you will have to adjust the speed and distance to the
vehicle ahead in some instances~
page 128, "Driver intervention
prompt" and~
page 130, "System limitations".
& WARNING
Improper use of the adaptive cruise control can cause collisions,
other accidents and serious personal injury.
• Never drive at speeds that are too high for traffic, road and
weather conditions.
• Never follow the vehicle in front so closely that you cannot stop
your vehicle safely. The adaptive cruise control cannot brake the
vehicle safely when you follow another vehicle too closely. Always
remember that the adaptive cruise control has a braking power
that is only about 25% of the vehicle's maximum braking ability,
the automatic braking function cannot bring the vehicle to a stop.
• Never use adaptive cruise control on roads where you cannot
drive safely at a steady speed, including city, stop-and-go or heavy
traffic, on winding roads or when road conditions are poor (for
example, on ice, gravel , in fog, heavy rain or on wet roads that
increase the risk of hydroplaning).
• The radar sensor's
vision can be reduced by rain, snow and
heavy spray. This can result in vehicles driving ahead being inade­
quately detected or, in some circumstances, not detected at all. If
necessary, take action yourself! ..,

How the ABS system works
An au tomatic check is made when a speed of about 12 mph (20
km/h) is reached. When this happens, a pumping no ise can be
heard .
I f an individua l wheel begins to ro tate too s low ly in relation to
vehic le speed and tends to lock, the ABS automatical ly reduces
b rake pressure t o preven t tha t whee l from locking.
This automatic adjustment process wil l cause a
slight vibration of
t he brake peda l and some noises to ale rt you tha t veh ic le sp eed
must be adapted to existing road and traffic conditions.
in. WARNING
Although the ABS is very effe ctive , always remember that braking
c apability is limited by tire traction. Always adjust your driving
speed a ccording to the road and traffi c conditions. Do not let the
extra safety afforded by the ABS tempt you into taking extra risks.
The ABS c annot overcome the laws of physics .

is indicated by the ABS warning light .
Brake assist
Brake assist is designed to achieve the optimum brakin g
effect.

to achieve a shorter stopping distance. If the driver presses the
br ake pe dal ve ry q uickl y, br ake a ss is t auto matically boo sts t he
braking force to the maximum lev el, up to the point where the anti ­

. You shou ld then keep the brake pedal pressed until the

off as soon as you release the brake pedal.

Please remember that the accident r isk always increases if you
drive too fast , espe cially in corners or on a slippery road , or if you
follow the vehicle ahead of you too closely. Increa sed risk of an
accident cannot be compensated for even by brake as sist , so
always maintain a safe speed .•
Servotronic® -advanced power
steering system
The pow er st eer in g systems uses th e po we r of t he
run nin g eng ine to a llow prec ise s tee ring with lit tle eff ort.
The advanced S ervotronic ® power steering system senses the road
s p eed and electr onically a djusts power assis tance t o provide
comfortab le and safe steering response exactly matched to the
ve hicle speed .
Power steering wi ll n ot work if the eng ine is off. As a result, the
steering whee l wil l be hard to turn.
Th e power s teering flu id leve l is check ed during the sc hed uled
maintenance services .

If there is an electronic ma lfunction, servotronic wi ll still function
like a conventi onal power s teer ing sys te m , pr ovi ding a constan t
steering support force that is no longer proportionate to the vehicle
speed. This is mo st noticeable when tu rning t he steering whee l at
low speeds {for examp le when parking), -more effort wi ll be
r equired than usual.

• Be aware of the different than usual steering response and
adjust your steering force accordingly.
• Have the problem checked and set right by an Audi dealer as
soon as possible.
[ i] Tips
• When the engine is running, never hold the steering wheel
turned all the way to the right or to the left for longer than 15
seconds. The power steering pump will overheat the hydraulic fluid
if you keep holding the steering wheel turned all the way. This is
likely to damage the power steering system.
• If the power steering system should fail en tirely, or if the engine
is not running (for example, while being towed), you will still be able
to steer the vehicle . However,
considerably more effort will be
required to do so.
• If the power steering system should have a leak, or is not func­
tioning properly, contact your authorized Audi dealer immediately.
• The power steering system requires a specially formulated
hydraulic fluid. The power steering reservoir is the one located
farthest to the rear on the left side of the engine compartment
=>
page 272. The correct fluid level in the reservoir is important for
proper functioning of the power steering .•
Driving with your quattro®
With all wheel drive, all four wheels are driven.
General information
With all wheel drive, power is distributed to all four wheels. This
happens automatically depending on your driving style and the
road conditions at the time. See also=>
page 235, "Electronic differ­
ential lock (EDU".
The all wheel drive concept is designed for high engine power. Your
vehicle is exceptionally powerful and has excellent driving charac -teristics both under normal driving conditions and on snow and ice.
Always read and
follow safety precautions =>& .
Winter tires
When driving in the winter, your vehicle with all wheel drive has an
advantage, even with regular tires. In winter road conditions it may
be advisable to mount winter tires (or all-season tires) for improved
driveability and braking : these tires must be mounted on
all four
wheels.

Tire chains
Where tire chains are mandatory on certain roads, this normally
also applies to vehicles with all wheel drive =>
page 305, "Snow
chains".
Replacing vvheels/tires
Vehicles with all wheel drive must always have tires of the same
si ze . Also avoid tires with different tread depths. For details see
page =>
page 299, "New tires and replacing tires and wheels".
Off-Road driving?
Your Audi does not have enough ground clearance to be used as an
off-road vehicle. It is therefore best to avoid rough tracks and
uneven terrain as much as possible. Also refer to=>
page 244.
& WARNING
Always adjust your driving to road and traffic conditions. Do not
let the extra safety afforded by all wheel drive tempt you into
taking extra risks.
• Although the all wheel drive is very effective, always remember
that braking capacity is limited by tire traction. You should there ­
fore not drive at excessive speeds on icy or slippery road surfaces.
• On wet road surfaces, be careful not to drive too fast because
the front wheels could begin to slide on top of the water (aqua­
planing). If this should occur, you will have no warning from a
sudden increase in engine speed as with a front-wheel drive
