Instruments and warning/indicator lights
switch the ESP on again . The system is functioning completely
when the indicator lamp switches off.
If the indicator lamp illuminates, the ESP was switched off with
the !ESP
O FF J button.
ESP / ABS fault ! See owner's manual
If the indicator lamp and the ABS indicator lamp illuminate
and the driver message appears, the ABS or electronic differential
lock is malfunctioning. This also interrupts the ESP. The brakes still
function with their normal power, but ABS is not active.

Airbag system
~i (USA models) / !l (Canada models)
This warning/indicator light monitors the airbag and the
pretensioner systems.
The I (USA models) t!! r (Canada models) warning light illuminates
for a few seconds each time you switch on the ignition.
If the m (USA models)
t!! r (Canada models) warning light does not
go out, or if it illuminates while you are driving, or if it starts to blink,
then there is a malfunction somewhere in the system . If the light
does not illuminate when you switch on the ignition, this a lso
means there is a malfunction.
& WARNING
If you have a malfunction in the airbag system, contact your autho­
rized Audi dealer immediately . Otherw ise the airbag or the belt
pretensioner may not work properly in an accident. •
Applies to vehicles: with tire pressu re mon itoring system
Tire pressure monitoring system -telltale
indicator lamp '
The warning/indicator light appears in the event of a
significant loss of air pressure.
The I L1 warning/indicator light illuminates for a few seconds after
the ignition is turned on as function check, and then goes out.
If the
1'· symbol appears, pressure is too low in at least one tire.
When the system detects a malfunction, the warning/indicator light
wi ll flash for approximately one minute and then remain continu­
ously illuminated. This sequence will continue upon subsequent
vehic le starts up as long as the malfunction exists. Contact your
authorized Aud i dealer and have the ma lfunction corrected.

Turn signals ¢ ¢
The indicator light blinks when you use either turn signal.
Whenever you use the left¢ or the right¢ turn signal, the indicator
light blinks. When you use the emergency flashers, both indicator
lights flash.
If one of the turn signal light bulbs burn out, the turn signal will
blink twice as fast as normal. •
Safety belts t
This warning/indicator light reminds you to put on your
safety belt.
T he t warning/indicator light i lluminates when the ignition is
switched on to remind the driver and (on USA models only) any front
passenger to put on the safety belt. Additionally, an audible warning
tone will also sound . _.,,

When a yellow warning symbol appears, one warning tone sounds.
A driver message appears as well to explain the malfunc tion in more
detail. The driver warning goes out after about 5 seconds, but it can
be brought up at any time by pressing the
!SE T) button again.
Check the function disp layed as soon as possible . The ye llow
symbol will not go out again until the reason for the malfunction has
been corrected.
If several priority 2 malfunctions are present, the symbols appear in
succession and remain for about 2 seconds .

malfunction occurs during travel. You can continue to drive care­

Defective light bulb warning
The defective light bulb warning monitors the function of
the light bulbs in the vehicle.
The defective light bulb warning monitors the function of the light
bulbs. If a defective light bulb is detected, or if a light bulb has
burned out, a yellow symbol appears as well as a notification that
shows which light bulb is defective.
Defective bulb
If this symbol lights up, a turn signal (front or rear), a headlamp,
a brake light, the back-up light, a fog lamp or a rear fog lamp has
failed.
& WARNING
• Light bulbs are under pressure and can explode when bulbs are
replaced -risk of injury.
• With gas-discharge lamps* (xenon headlights), the high­
voltage component must be handled appropriately. Doing other­
wise poses a risk of death!

Have an authorized Audi dealer or other qualified workshop perform
the replacement or the repair. •
Windshield washer fluid level too low ->
Top off the washer fluid
If the symbol illuminates, add windshield washer fluid to the washer
system and also to the headlight washer system* =>
page 286. •

When the symbol illuminates, this means there are about 2.1
gallons
(8 liters) of fuel left in the fuel tank. Time to refuel!

If the symbol lights up, even when there is ample fuel in the tank,

TANK SYSTEM MALFUNCTION ! CONTACT WORKSHOP
appears in the display, there is a fault in the system. Contact a qual­
ified workshop to have the fault rectified. •

If battery power drops into the range where it can limit the ability of
the engine to start, this the symbol appears in the instrument
cluster display with the following driver message
battery charge
low: Indicates charging by being driven .
While this driver notification is displayed, you have to be prepared
for limited starting capability.
Driver message appears and goes out again
If this driver message appears after the ignition is turned on or
while driving and it goes out again after a while, the battery has
been adequately recharged.
Driver message appears and does not go out again
If this driver notification appears after the ignition is turned on or
while driving and does not go out again, the battery's state of
charge is not in the optimal range. Starting capability is restricted.
Have the battery checked at an authorized Audi dealer or other qual­
ified workshop as soon as possible. •

gas which is explosive and could cause personal
injury .
Always keep the battery well out of reach of chil­
dren .
_& WARNING
Whenever working on the battery or on the electrical system ,
there is the risk of injury , accident and even fire . Read and heed the
following WARNINGS:
• Always wear eye protection . Do not let battery acid or any lead
particles get on your skin or clothing. Shield your eyes. Explosive
gases can cause blindness or other injury.
• Battery acid contains sulfuric acid . Sulfuric acid can cause
blindness and severe burns .
- Always wear gloves and eye protection . Do not tilt the
battery because acid could leak out of the ventilation openings .
- If you get battery acid in your eyes or on your skin, immedi ­
ately rinse with cold water for several minutes and get medical
attention.
- If you should ingest any battery acid , seek medical attention
immediately.
• Do not expose the battery to an open flame, electric sparks or
an open light.
• Do not smoke .
• Do not interchange the positive and negative cables .
• When working on the battery , be sure not to short -circuit the
terminals with tools or other metal objects . This would cause the

battery to heat up very quickly, which could lead to damage or
explosion and personal injury.
• When a battery is charged , it produces hydrogen gas which is
explosive and could cause personal injury .
• Always keep the battery well out of the reach of children. • Before work is done on the electrical system, disconnect the
negative ground cable .
• Before performing any work on the electrical system , switch off
the engine and ignition as well as any electrical equipment. The negative cable on the battery must be disconnected. If you are just
going to replace a light bulb, then it is enough to switch off the
lights.
• Before disconnecting the battery , switch off the anti -theft
alarm system! Otherwise you will set off the alarm .
• When disconnecting the battery , first disconnect the negative
cable and then the positive cable .
• Before reconnecting the battery, make sure all electrical
consumers are switched off . Reconnect the positive cable first and
then the negative cable . Never interchange the cables -this could
start a fire !
• Never charge a frozen or a thawed -out battery. It could
explode! If a battery has frozen, then it must be replaced . A
discharged battery can freeze over at 32 °F (0 °CI.
• Make sure the vent hose is always attached to the opening on
the side of the battery.
• Never use batteries which are damaged . There is the danger of
an explosion! Always replace a damaged battery .

Trunk escape handle
In case of an emergency, the rear lid can be opened from
the inside using the trunk escape handle.

The tools are stored underneath the floor panel in the
luggage compartment.

to take out the spare tire* and cover~

Replacing a fuse
A problem in the electrical system may be caused by a
blown fuse.

T he fuses are located at the front left and right of the
cockpit and behind the trim on the right side of the luggage
compartment .
- Switch off the ignitio n and the e lectr ica l component
affected.
- Use t he fo llow ing tab le to find which f use belongs to the
consumer and remove the cover to reach that f use.
- Care fully pry t he face cover off the instrument pane l
using a screwdriver =:> fig. 247 .
Remove the plastic cl ip from its retainer in the face cover,
place it over the questionable fuse and remove the fuse.
Replace a blown fuse (recogn izable by the melted metal
strip inside) with a fuse of the
same amperage .
The individual circuits are protected by fuses. The fuse panels with
the fuses are located on the left and right front faces of the instru ­
ment pane l beh ind a cover and in the right storage area in the
luggage compartment.
There is a plastic clip in the cover on the lef t side of the instrument
panel, which can be used to remove the fuses. You w ill also find a
l abel on both covers in the ins trument panel with the fuse layout for
the corresponding fuse panel.

Nev er rep lace a fu se with one t hat h as a higher amper age r ating .
• A fuse with a too high amperage co uld damage the electric al
part and cau se a fir e.

• On no account should fuses be repaired (e.g . patched up with tin
foil or wire) as this may cause serious damage elsewhere in the elec ­
trical circuit or cause fire .
• If a fuse blows repeated ly, do not keep replacing it . Instead, have
the cause of the repeated short circuit or overload located and fixed.

You are well advised to keep a supply of spare fuses in your vehic le.
Fuses wi th the proper ampere ratings are available at your autho ­
rized Audi dealer. •
