NOTEFor the vehicle to start, one of the vehicle\fs
remote keys must be in the passenger com-
partment.
Jump starting
Connecting the jumper cables
Follow these instructions to jump start your
vehicle\fs dead battery or to jump start another
vehicle\fs dead battery using your vehicle. If the
12-volt auxiliary battery to be used is in another
vehicle, check that the vehicles are not touch-
ing to prevent premature completion of a cir-
cuit. Be sure to follow jump starting instruc-
tions provided for the other vehicle.
To jump start your vehicle: 1. Switch off the ignition (set the ignition to
mode 0, see page 79).
2. First connect the red jumper cable to the auxiliary battery\fs positive (+) terminal .
3. Fold back the cover over the positive (+) terminal on your vehicle\fs battery ,
marked with a "+" sign, located under a
folding cover.
4. Connect the black jumper cable to the aux-
iliary battery\fs negative (–) terminal and
to the ground point in your vehicle\fs engine
compartment (right engine mount at the
top, on the outer screw) .
5. Start the engine in the assisting vehicle, then start the engine in the vehicle with
dead battery.
6. After the engine has started, first remove the negative (–) terminal jumper cable
(black). Then remove the positive (+) termi-
nal jumper cable (red).WARNING PROPOSITION 65 WARNING!
Battery posts, terminals, and related acces-
sories contain lead and lead compounds,
chemicals known to the state of California
to cause cancer and reproductive harm.
Wash hands after handling.
CAUTION
Connect the jumper cables carefully to
avoid short circuits with other components

110 the right to M (or to S on models equipped
with Sport mode).
\b To return to the D position from M or S,
move the gear selector to the left.
NOTE On models equipped with Sport mode, the
transmission will not switch to manual shift-
ing mode until the gear selector is moved
forward or rearward. The selected gear will
then be shown in the information display
(see page 73).
While driving
\b
If you select the M position while driving,
the gear that was being used in the Drive
position will also initially be selected in the
M position.
\b Move the gear selector forward (toward
"+") to shift to a higher gear or rearward
(toward "–") to shift to a lower gear.
\b If you hold the gear selector toward "–", the
transmission will downshift one gear at a
time and will utilize the braking power of
the engine. If the current speed is too high
for using a lower gear, the downshift will
not occur until the speed has decreased
enough to allow the lower gear to be used. \b
If you slow to a very low speed, the trans-
mission will automatically shift down.
Shiftlock – Neutral (N)If the gear selector is in the
N position and the
vehicle has been stationary for at least 3 sec-
onds (irrespective of whether the engine is run-
ning) then the gear selector is locked.
To be able to move the gear selector from N to
another gear position, the brake pedal must be
depressed and the ignition must be in posi-
tion II, see page 79.
Geartronic–starting on slippery surfacesSelecting 3rd gear in Geartronic’s manual shift-
ing mode can help provide better traction when
starting off on slippery surfaces. To do so:
1. Depress the brake pedal and move the
gear selector to the right from the D posi-
tion to M. The text in the instrument panel
display will change from D to 1.
2. Press the gear selector forward and release it (this selects 2nd gear). Press the
selector forward again and release it to
select 3rd gear.
3. Release the brake pedal and press gently on the accelerator pedal.
Shiftlock override If the vehicle cannot be driven, for example
because of a dead battery, the gear selector
must be moved from the P position so that the
vehicle can be moved

. Lift away the rubber mat on the floor of the
storage compartment behind the center
console and open the hatch.
Insert the key blade into the opening as far
as possible. Press the key blade down and
keep it held down. Move the gear selector
from the P position. For information on the
key blade, see page 55.

If the battery is dead, the optional electric parking brake cannot be ap\
plied or released. Connect an auxiliary battery if the battery voltage i\

116 Electric parking brake
An electric parking brake has the same func-
tion as a manual parking brake.
NOTE
\b
A faint sound from the parking brake\fs
electric motor can be heard when the
parking brake is being applied. This
sound can also be heard during the
automatic function check of the parking
brake.
\b The brake pedal will move slightly when
the electric parking brake is applied or
released.
Low battery voltageIf the battery voltage is too low, the parking
brake cannot be applied or released. Connect
an auxiliary battery if the battery voltage is too
low, see page 107.
Applying the electric parking brake Parking brake control
1. Press firmly on the brake pedal.
2. Push the control.
3. Release the brake pedal and ensure that
the vehicle is at a standstill.
4. When the vehicle is parked, the gear selec-
tor must be in position P.
The symbol in the instrument panel
flashes while the parking bake is being applied,
and glows steadily when the parking brake has
been fully applied.NOTE \b
In an emergency the parking brake can
be applied when the vehicle is moving
by holding in the control. Braking will be
interrupted when the accelerator pedal
is depressed or the control is released.
\b An audible signal will sound during this
procedure if the vehicle is moving at
speeds above 6 mph (10 km/h).
Parking on a hill
\b
If the vehicle is pointing uphill, turn the front
wheels so that they point away from the
curb.
\b If the vehicle is pointing downhill, turn the
front wheels so that they point toward the

Driving through water
\b
The vehicle can be driven through water up
to a depth of approximately 10 in. (25 cm),
at a maximum speed of 6 mph (10 km/h).
\b Take particular care when driving through
flowing water.
\b Clean the electrical connections for trailer
wiring after driving in mud or water.
\b When driving through water, maintain low
speed and do not stop in the water.
WARNING After driving through water, press lightly on
the brake pedal to ensure that the brakes
are functioning normally. Water or mud can
make the brake linings slippery, resulting in
delayed braking effect.
CAUTION \b
Engine damage will occur if water is
drawn into the air cleaner.
\b If the vehicle is driven through water
deeper than 10 in (25 cm), water may
enter the differential and the transmis-
sion. This reduces the oil\fs lubricating
capacity and may shorten the service
life of these components.
\b Do not allow the vehicle to stand in
water up to the door sills longer than
absolutely necessary. This could result
in electrical malfunctions.
\b If the engine has been stopped while the
vehicle is in water, do not attempt to
restart it. Have the vehicle towed out of
the water.
Engine and cooling systemUnder special conditions, for example when
driving in hilly terrain, extreme heat or with
heavy loads, there is a risk that the engine and
cooling system will overheat. Proceed as fol-
lows to avoid overheating the engine.
\b
Maintain a low speed when driving with a
trailer up long, steep hills.
\b Do not turn the engine off immediately
when stopping after a hard drive.
WARNING The cooling fan may start or continue to
operate (for up to 6 minutes) after the engine
has been switched off.
\b
Remove any auxiliary lights from in front of
the grille when driving in hot weather con-
ditions.
\b Do not exceed engine speeds of 4500 rpm
if driving with a trailer in hilly terrain. The oil
temperature could become too high.
Conserving electrical currentKeep the following in mind to help minimize
battery drain:
\bWhen the engine is not running, avoid
using ignition mode
II. Many electrical sys-
tems (the audio system, the optional navi-
gation system, power windows, etc) will
function in ignition modes 0 and I. These
modes reduce drain on the battery.
\b Please keep in mind that using systems,
accessories, etc., that consume a great
deal of current when the engine is not run-
ning could result in the battery being com-
pletely drained.
\b The optional 12 volt socket in the cargo
area provides electrical current even with
the ignition switched off, which drains the
battery.

NOTEDuring towing, ignition mode
II should be
used so that the lighting can be switched on.
CAUTION Vehicles with AWD (All Wheel Drive) with the
front wheels off the ground should not be
towed at speeds above 50 mph (70 km/h) or
for distances longer than 30 miles (50 km).
CAUTION
\b
Please check with state and local
authorities before attempting this type
of towing, as vehicles being towed are
subject to regulations regarding maxi-
mum towing speed, length and type of
towing device, lighting, etc.
\b If the vehicle\fs battery is dead, do not
attempt to start the vehicle by pushing
or pulling it as this will damage the
three-way catalytic converter(s). The
engine must be jump started using an
auxiliary battery (see page 107).
\b If the vehicle is being towed on a flat bed
truck, the towing eyelets must not be
used to pull the vehicle up onto the flat
bed or to secure the vehicle on the flat
bed. Consult the tow truck operator.
Towing vehicles with front wheel drive/
All Wheel Drive
Volvo recommends the use of flat bed equip-
ment.
\b
If wheel lift equipment must be used,
please use extreme caution to help avoid
damage to the vehicle.
In this case, the
vehicle should be towed with the rear
wheels on the ground if at all possible.
\b If it is absolutely necessary to tow the vehi-
cle with the front wheels on the ground,
please refer to the towing information on
page 220.
CAUTION \b
Sling-type equipment applied at the
front will damage radiator and air con-
ditioning lines.
\b It is equally important not to use sling-
type equipment at the rear or apply lift-
ing equipment inside the rear wheels;
serious damage to the rear axle may
result.
\b If the vehicle is being towed on a flat bed
truck, the towing eyelets must not be
used to secure the vehicle on the flat
bed. Consult the tow truck operator.
