Before driving
Your vehicle is equipped with
ADVANCED AIRBAGS designed based
on US motor vehicle safety standards (FMVSS208). The airbag sys -
tem controls airbag deployment power
for the driver and front pas-
senger. The driver airbag system consists of the driver seat’s position
se
nsor etc. The front passenger’s airbag system consists of the front
passenger occupant classification sensor etc.
The main SRS airbag system components are shown above. The
SRS airbag
system is controlled by the airbag sensor assembly. The
airbag sensor assembly consists of a safing sensor and an airbag
sensor.
In certain types of severe frontal or side imp
acts, the SRS airbag sys-
tem triggers the airbag inflators. A chemical rea
ction in the inflators
quickly fills the airbags with non-toxic gas to help restrain the motion
of the occupants.
n SRS warning light
This warning light system monitors the airbag sensor assembly, front airbag
sensors, side and curtain shield airbag sensors, curtain shield airbag sen -
sors, driver’s seat position sensor, driver’s seat belt buckle switch, front pas -
senger occupant classification system, AIR BAG ON indicator light, AIR
BAG OFF indicator
light, front passenger’s seat belt buckle switch, seat belt
pretensioner assemblies, inflators, interconnecting wiring and power

n If the SRS airbags deploy (inflate)
l Bruising and
slight abrasions may result from contact with a deploying
(inflating) SRS airbag.
l A loud noise and white powder will be emitted.
l V
ehicles with side and curtain shield airbags: Parts of the airbag module
(steering wheel hub, airbag cover and inflator) as well as the front seats,
and parts of the front and rear pillars and roof side rail, may be hot for
several minutes. The airbag itself may also be hot.
l V
ehicles without side and curtain shield airbags: Parts of the airbag mod -
ule (steering wheel hub, airbag cover and inflator) as well as the front
seat
s may be hot for several minutes. The airbag itself may also be hot.

Key reminder function
A buzzer sounds if the driver’s door is opened, while the engine switch is in
the ACC or LOCK position to remind you to remove the key.
CAUTION
nWhen starting the engine
Always start the engine while sitting in the driver's seat. Do not depress the
accelerator while starting the engine under any circumstances.
Doing so may cause an accident resulting in death or serious injury.
n Caution while driving
Do not turn the engine switch to the LOCK position.
If in an emergency, you must turn the engine off while the vehicle is moving,
turn the key only to the ACC position.
NOTICE
nTo prevent battery discharge
Do not leave the key in the ACC or ON position for long periods if the engine
is not running.
n When starting the engine
lDo not crank for more than 30 seconds at a time. This may overheat the
starter and wiring systems.
l Do not race a cold engine.
l If the engine becomes difficult to start or stalls frequently, have the engine
checked immediately.

Cleaning the inside of the rear window
Do not use glass cleaner to clean the rear window, as this may cause dam -
age to the rear window defogger heater wires. Use a cloth dampened with
lukewarm
water to gently wipe the window clean. Wipe the window in
strokes running parallel to the heater wires.
n Caring for leather areas
Toyota recommends cleaning the interior of the vehicle at least twice a year
to maint
ain the quality of the vehicle's interior.
n Shampooing the carpet
s
There are several commercial foaming-type cleaners available. Use a
sponge or brush to apply
the foam. Rub in overlapping circles. Do not apply
water. The excellent results are obtained when keeping the carpet as dry as
possible.
n Seat belt
s
Clean with mild soap and lukewarm water using a cloth or sponge. Also
check the belts periodically for excessive wear, fraying or cuts.
CAUTION
nWater in the vehicle
lDo not splash or spill liquid in the vehicle. Doing so may cause the electri-
cal components etc. to malfunction or catch fire.
l Do not get any of the SRS components or wiring in the vehicle interior wet.

Electrical malfunction may cause the airbags to deploy or not function
properly, resulting in death or severe injury.

After a fuse is replaced
l If the
lights do not turn on even after the fuse has been replaced, a bulb
may need replacement. ( →P. 286)
l If the replaced fuse blows again, have the vehicle inspected by your T

ota dealer.
n If there is an overloa
d in the circuits
The fuses are designed to blow before the entire wiring harness is damaged.
CAUTION
nTo prevent system breakdowns and vehicle fire
Observe the following precautions.
Failing to do so may cause damage, and possibly a fire or injury.
l Never use a fuse of a higher amperage rating than indicated, or use any
other object in place of a fuse.
l Always use a genuine Toyota fuse or equivalent.
Never replace a fuse with a wire, even as a temporary fix.
This can cause extensive damage or even fire.
l Do not modify the fuse or the fuse box.
NOTICE
nBefore replacing fuses
Have the cause of electrical overload determined and repaired by your Toy-
ota dealer as soon as possible.
