Safety Belt Pretensioners
This vehicle has safety belt pretensioners for the
front outboard occupants. Although the safety belt
pretensioners cannot be seen, they are part of the safety
belt assembly. They can help tighten the safety belts
during the early stages of a moderate to severe frontal
or near frontal crash if the threshold conditions for
pretensioner activation are met. And, if your vehicle has
side impact airbags, safety belt pretensioners can help
tighten the safety belts in a side crash or a rollover event.
Pretensioners work only once. If the pretensioners
activate in a crash, they will need to be replaced,
and probably other new parts for the vehicle’s safety

Rear Safety Belt Comfort Guides
Rear shoulder belt comfort guides may provide added
safety belt comfort for older children who have outgrown
booster seats and for some adults. When installed on
a shoulder belt, the comfort guide positions the belt
away from the neck and head.There is one guide for each outside passenger position
in the rear seat. Here is how to install the comfort
guide to the shoulder belt:
1. Slide the guide off of its storage clip located
between the interior body and the seatback or from
the storage pocket on the side of the seat.
2. Place the guide over the belt and insert the two
edges of the belt into the slots of the guide.

Securing a Child Restraint in the
Right Front Seat Position
This vehicle has airbags. A rear seat is a safer place to
secure a forward-facing child restraint. SeeWhere to
Put the Restraint on page 1-42.
In addition, the vehicle has a passenger sensing system
which is designed to turn off the right front passenger
frontal airbag under certain conditions. SeePassenger
Sensing System on page 1-63andPassenger Airbag
Status Indicator on page 3-33for more information,
including important safety information.
A label on the sun visor says, “Never put a rear-facing
child seat in the front.” This is because the risk to
the rear-facing child is so great, if the airbag deploys.
{CAUTION:
A child in a rear-facing child restraint can be
seriously injured or killed if the right front
passenger airbag inates. This is because the
back of the rear-facing child restraint would be
very close to the inating airbag. A child in a

forward-facing child restraint can be seriously
injured or killed if the right front passenger airbag
inates and the passenger seat is in a forward
position.
Even if the passenger sensing system has turned
off the right front passenger frontal airbag, no
system is fail-safe. No one can guarantee that an
airbag will not deploy under some unusual
circumstance, even though it is turned off.
Secure rear-facing child restraints in a rear
seat, even if the airbag is off. If you secure a
forward-facing child restraint in the right front seat,
always move the front passenger seat as far back
as it will go. It is better to secure the child restraint
in a rear seat.

The passenger sensing system will turn off the right
front passenger frontal airbag under certain conditions.
The driver airbags and roof-rail airbags are not
affected by the passenger sensing system.
The passenger sensing system works with sensors that
are part of the right front passenger seat. The sensors
are designed to detect the presence of a properly-seated
occupant and determine if the right front passenger
frontal airbag should be enabled (may inate) or not.
According to accident statistics, children are safer when
properly secured in a rear seat in the correct child
restraint for their weight and size.
We recommend that children be secured in a rear seat,
including: an infant or a child riding in a rear-facing
child restraint; a child riding in a forward-facing child
seat; an older child riding in a booster seat; and children,
who are large enough, using safety belts.

R (Reverse):Use this gear to back up.
Notice:Shifting to R (Reverse) while the vehicle is
moving forward could damage the transmission.
The repairs would not be covered by the vehicle
warranty. Shift to R (Reverse) only after the vehicle
is stopped.

ice, or sand without damaging the transmission,

N (Neutral):In this position, the engine does not
connect with the wheels. To restart the engine when
the vehicle is already moving, use N (Neutral) only.
{CAUTION:
Shifting into a drive gear while the engine is
running at high speed is dangerous. Unless your
foot is rmly on the brake pedal, the vehicle could
move very rapidly. You could lose control and hit
people or objects. Do not shift into a drive gear
while the engine is running at high speed.Notice:Shifting out of P (Park) or N (Neutral) with
the engine running at high speed may damage
the transmission. The repairs would not be covered
by the vehicle warranty. Be sure the engine is
not running at high speed when shifting the vehicle.
D (Drive):This position is for normal driving.
It provides the best fuel economy. If you need
more power for passing, and you are:
Going less than about 35 mph (55 km/h), push the
accelerator pedal about halfway down.
Going about 35 mph (55 km/h) or more, push the
accelerator all the way down.
The vehicle will shift down to the next gear and have
more power.
Downshifting the transmission in slippery road conditions
could result in skidding, see “Skidding” underLoss of
Control on page 4-12.
D (Drive) can be used when towing a trailer, carrying a
heavy load, driving on steep hills, or for off-road
driving. You may want to shift the transmission to
3 (Third) or, if necessary, a lower gear selection if the
transmission shifts too often.

30 trial minutes good for 60 days, is available on most
vehicles. OnStar Turn-by-Turn Navigation service,
with one trial route, is available on most vehicles.

contact Roadside Service.OnStar service is provided subject to the OnStar Terms
and Conditions included in the OnStar Subscriber
glove box literature.
Some services such as Remote Door Unlock or
Stolen Vehicle Location Assistance may not be available

After the rst prepaid year, contact OnStar to select a
monthly or annual subscription payment plan. If a
payment plan is not selected, the OnStar system and all
services, including airbag notication and emergency

With this system the heating, cooling, and ventilation
can be controlled for the vehicle.

Defogger
Driver’s Side Temperature Lever:Raise or lower
the lever to increase or decrease the temperature
on the driver’s side of the vehicle.Passenger Side Temperature Lever:Raise or lower
the lever to increase or decrease the temperature on
the passenger side of the vehicle. This right lever
also adjusts the temperature to the rear seat outlets.
When the temperature outside is 0°F (-18°C) or lower,
use the engine coolant heater, if the vehicle has one,
to provide warmer air faster to the vehicle.
9(Fan Control):Turn clockwise or counterclockwise
to increase or decrease the fan speed. If the knob is in off
mode, outside air still enters the vehicle, and is directed
based on the position of the air delivery mode knob.
The temperature can still be adjusted using the
temperature knob.
Air Delivery Mode Control:Turn clockwise or
counterclockwise to change the airow direction
inside the vehicle.
To change the current mode, select one of the following:
H(Vent):Air is directed to the instrument panel
outlets.
)(Bi-Level):Air is divided between the instrument
panel and oor outlets. Some air is directed toward the
windshield and the side window outlets. Cooler air is
directed to the upper vents and warmer air to the oor
outlets.

6(Floor):Air is directed to the oor outlets, with
some air directed to the windshield and the side window
outlets. The recirculation button cannot be selected
while in oor mode.
-(Defog):This mode clears the windows of fog or
moisture. Air is directed to the oor, windshield and
side window outlets. The recirculation button cannot
be selected while in defog mode.
1(Defrost):This mode clears the windows of fog or
frost more quickly. Air is directed to the windshield and
the side window outlets, with some air directed to the
oor outlets. The air conditioning compressor may run
to dehumidify the air to prevent window fogging.
The recirculation button cannot be selected while
in defrost mode.
Do not drive the vehicle until all the windows are clear.
#(Air Conditioning):Press to turn the
air-conditioning system on or off. An indicator light
comes on and the system begins to cool and dehumidify
the air inside of the vehicle. You may notice a slight
change in engine performance when the air conditioning
compressor shuts off and turns on again. This is normal.
@(Recirculation):Press to turn the recirculation
mode on. An indicator light comes to show that the
recirculation is on. This mode recirculates and helps to
quickly cool the air inside the vehicle. It can be used to
help prevent outside air and odors from entering the
vehicle. The air conditioning compressor will also come
on when this mode is activated. While in recirculation
mode, the windows may fog when the weather is cold
and damp. To clear the fog, select either the defog or
defrost mode and increase fan speed.
