The ~D warning/indicator light illuminates when the high beams are
on or when you use the head light flasher . For more information
about using the high beams, see=>

Rear spoiler
The warning/indicator light monitors the electrically
retractable rear spoiler .
The warning/indicator light~ has the following functions:
• It comes on for about
3 seconds as a function check when the
ignition is switched on.
• It comes on if there is a malfunction in the electrically retractable
rear spoiler.

Turn signals ¢i Q
The indica tor light blinks when you use either turn signal.
Whenever you use the left¢ or the right¢ turn signal, the ind icator
light blinks. When you use the emergency flasher, both indicator
lights flash.
If one of the turn signal light bulbs burn out, the turn signal will
b link twice as fast as normal.

Cruise control
CRUISE (USA models) / 0 (Canada models)
The CRUISE warning/indicator light illuminates when the cruise
control is activated. •
Airbag system

This warning/i ndicator light monitors the airbag and the
tensioner systems .
The ~ (USA mode ls) / !l (Canada mode ls) warning light i lluminates
f or a few seconds each t ime you switch on the ignition .
If the
ffl (USA models) t ! !r (Canada models) warning light does not
go out, or if it i lluminates whi le you are driving, or if it sta rts to b link,
then there is a malfunction somewhere in the system. If the light
does not il luminate when you switch on the ignition, this a lso
means there is a malfunction.

This warning/indi cato r light detects a mal function in the
generator or in the vehicle's electrical system.

When a red symbol appears, a warning tone will sound three times
in succession. The symbol continues to flash until the malfunction
has been repaired . If there is

When a yel low symbol appears, a warning tone wil l sound once.
Check the displayed function as soon as possible . If more than one
malfunction is detected, all symbols wil l appear one after the other
for about two seconds .•

symbols in the instrument cluster display, driver informa tion is displayed.

Driver information appears in the display when a defective light
bulb is reported by the defective light bulb warning ~ page 36,
when the brake pads are worn and before you engage a gear on
vehicles with S tronic .
In addition, driver information may appear when a red symbol
flashes in the driver disp lay .

If the warning light illuminates, immediately contact your autho
rized Audi dealer or qualified workshop to have all brake pads
inspected. On USA models the warning light~ comes on together
with the warning light
BRAKE. Both sets of brake pads on an axle must
always be replaced at the same time.
& WARNING
Driving with bad brakes can cause a collision and serious personal
injury.
• If the warning light
~ and the warning light BRAKE11 with the
message Brake pads! comes on in the instrument cluster display,
immediately contact your authorized Audi dealer or qualified
workshop to have all brake pads checked or replaced if
necessary. •

longer working properly . Have the system checked and repaired at
your authorized Audi dealer. •

washer system

Battery voltage low
If the LI symbol illuminates, contact your authorized Audi dealer
and have the following components inspected:
• drive belt
• battery charge

Defective light bulb warning
The defective light bulb warning tells you when a vehicle
light bulb has become defective.
If a defective bulb has been detected by the system or a light bulb
burns out, the symbol with a message appears in the display to
tell you which bulb is burnt out and where it is located. For example:
Rear left turn signal
After 5 seconds, the message disappears. If you want to recall the
message into the display, press the CHECK button=>
page 12, fig. 2

There are three reasons why the defective bulb message would
appear in the display:
• The light bulb has burnt out=>
page 278.
• The fuse is "blown"=> page 274, "Replacing a fuse".
• The wire connection to the light bulb is defective.
Have the bulb replaced or the connection repaired by your autho
rized Audi Service department.
& WARNING
• Light bulbs are pressurized and could explode while they are
being changed causing serious personal injury.
• Work with due care when handling the high-voltage section of
gas discharge (xenon) lamps. Failing to do so could result in death
or serious injury! •
Brake light defective i( r (USA
models)/ (Canada models)
In case of a malfunction or component failure, the symbol
(USA models)/ (Canada models) can appear . The following elec
trical components should be checked, repaired or replaced, as
necessary:
• Brake light bulbs
• All wiring connections
• Brake light switch
Contact your authorized Audi dealer for assistance if necessary.

The brake light switch is only inspected as part of the functional
check after the engine is started .•

Light/rain sensor defective U
The indicator light indicates a defect in the automatic
headlights/automatic wiper system.
If the symbol illuminates, the light sensor has failed. For safety
reasons , the low beams are turned on permanently with the switch
in
AUTO. However, you can continue to turn the lights on and off
using the light switch . In the case of a defect in the rain sensor, the
windshield wiper lever functions are still available. Have the
light/rain sensor checked as soon as possible at an authorized Audi
dealer. •

Adaptive Light defective " )
Adaptive light defective
When this symbol l-illuminates, it means that Adaptive Light is
defective. Go to a qualified workshop to have the headlights or the
control unit for the Adaptive Light repaired. •

Tire pressure monitoring system
Tire pressure that is too low must be corrected as soon as
possible.
If the O symbol flashes for about one minute after the igni
tion is switched on and then remains on, there is a malfunc
tion in the system. Consult the nearest authorized Audi
dealer as soon as possible.

The following WARNINGS are very important when
working on the battery:
Always heed the following WARNING SYMBOLS and safety pre
cautions when work ing on the battery .

Always wear eye protection .
Battery acid contains sulfuric acid. Always wear
gloves and eye protection .

· smoking .
When a battery is charged , it produces hydrogen
gas which is explosive and could cause personal
injury .
Always keep the battery well out of reach of chil
dren .
& WARNING
Whenever working on the battery or on the electrical system,
there is the risk of injury , accident and even fire. Read and heed the
following
WARNINGS :
• Always wear eye protection. Do not let battery acid or any lead
particles get on your skin or clothing . Shield your eyes . Explosive
gases can cause blindness or other injury.
• Battery acid contains sulfuric acid. Sulfuric acid can cause
blindness and severe burns.
-Always wear gloves and eye protection . Do not tilt the
battery because acid could leak out of the ventilation openings .
- If you get battery acid in your eyes or on your skin, immedi
ately rinse with cold water for several minutes and get medi cal
attention .

- If you should ingest any battery acid , seek medical attention
immed iately.
• Do not expose the battery to an open flame , electric sparks or
an open light.
• Do not smoke.
• Do not interchange the positive and negative cables.
• When working on the battery, be sure not to short -circuit the
terminals with tools or other metal objects. This would cause the
battery to heat up very quickly , which could lead to damage or
explosion and personal injury.
• When a battery is charged , it produces hydrogen gas which is
explosive and could cause personal injury.
• Always keep the battery well out of the reach of children .
• Before work is done on the electrical system, disconnect the
negative ground cable .
• Before performing any work on the electrical system , switch off
the engine and ignit ion as well as any electri cal equipment . The
negative cable on the battery must be disconnected . If you are just
going to replace a light bulb , then it is enough to switch off the
lights.
• Before disconnecting the battery , switch off the anti-theft
alarm system! Otherwise you will set off the alarm.
• When disconnecting the battery, first disconnect the negative
cable and then the positive cable.
• Before reconnecting the battery , make sure all electrical
consumers are switched off. Reconnect the positive cable first and
then the negative cable . Never interchange the cables • this could
start a fire!
• Never charge a frozen or a thawed-out battery . It could
explode! If a battery has frozen , then it must be replaced. A
discharged battery can freeze over at 32 °F (0 °Cl. ..,_

Replacing a fuse
A problem in the electrical system may be caused by a
blown fuse.

- Switch off the ignition and the electrical component
affected. - Carefully pry the fuse cover off the instrument panel
using the ignition key or a screwdriver~ fig. 168.
- Check the fuse listing on the next pages to find out which
fuse belongs to the component which has failed
~ page 275, "Fuse Locatio n, Instrume nt Panel left".
- Remove the blown fuse with the plastic clip provided.
The clip is located on the holder in the fuse box.
- Replace a blown fuse (recognizable by the melted metal
strip inside) w ith a fuse of the same amperage .
- Firmly snap the cover back onto the instrument panel
face.

- Switch the ignition and the affected consumer off.
- Unlatch the fuse cover, push the two slides forward
~ fig. 169.
- Find out which fuse belongs to the equipment which
stopped working~ page 277, "Fuse location, left side of
engine compartment".
- Remove the plastic from its reta iner in the fuse box cover
(left face end of the instrument panel), place it on the
fuse in question and pull it out.
- If the fuse is burned out (recognizable by melted strips of
metal), replace it with a new fuse of the same rating.
- Replace the fuse cover.
- Push the two slides to the rear~ fig. 169. Install the fuse
cover carefully to prevent water from entering.
