The lower body shell of your Audi is a lso thorough ly protected
against corros ion.
Any damage to the undercoating caused by road hazards should be repa ired p romptly .

near the exhau st manifold , ex haust p ipe s, cat alytic con verter or

Care of interior
Aluminum trim
Use only neutral-pH products to remove spots and deposits from
a luminum surfaces. Chrome care products and alka line cleaners
w ill attack aluminum s urfaces and ca n damage them over time .

Fabrics and fabric coverings
Fabrics and fabric coverings (e.g . seats, door trim pane ls, etc.)
shou ld be c leaned at regular intervals with a vacuum cleaner . This
removes surface dirt partic les which could become embedded in
t he fabric through use. Steam clea ners shou ld not be used, because
the steam tends to push the dirt deeper into the fabric and lock it
there .
No rmal cleaning
Genera lly, we recommend using a soft spo nge or a lint-free
microfiber c loth to the clean fabric . Brushes should on ly be used for
carpe ts and floor mats, since other fabric su rfaces co uld be harmed
by brushes.
N orma l surface stains can be cleaned using a commercially avail ­
able foam cleaner. Spread the foam on the surface o f the fabric with
a soft sponge and work it in gent ly. Do not saturate the fabric . Then
pat the foam dry us ing absorbent, dry cloths (e.g. microfiber cloth)
and vacuum it after it has dried completely .
C leaning stains
Stains caused by beverages (e.g. coffee, fruit juice, etc.) can be
t reated with a mild detergent so lution . Apply the detergent so lution
with a sponge. In the case of stubborn stains, a detergent paste can
be applied directly to the stain and worked into the fabric . After­
wards, use copious amounts of clean water to remove the
re maining dete rgent . Apply the water w ith a damp cloth or sponge
and pat the fabric dry with an absorbent, dry c loth .
Stains from chocolate or makeup should have detergent paste (e.g .
ox -ga ll soap) rubbed into them. Afterwards, remove the soap with
water (damp sponge) .
A lcoho l can be used to treat s tains from grease, oi l, lipst ick or a ba ll­
point pen . Melted grease or dye must be patted off using absorbent
ma terial. It may be neces sary to retrea t the areas with de tergent
paste and water. _.,

tance to wear and soiling in daily use. On the other hand, the typical
characteristics of natural leather are barely or not apparent.
However, this does not mean that the leather itself is of inferior
quality.
Care and handling
Because of the exclusive nature of the types of leather that Audi
uses and their unique properties (such as sensitivity to oils, grease,
soiling, etc.I, you will need to be somewhat careful with these
leathers , and a certain type of care is required. For example, dark
clothing materials can discolor leather seats (especially if such
clothing is damp and was not dyed correctly). Dust and dirt particles
in pores, folds, and seams can have an abrasive effect and can
damage the leather surface as well as weaken seams.
The leather should be cleaned regularly as needed . After having
been used for a relatively long time, your leather seats will acquire
a rich aged finish. This is a characteris tic of natural leather and a
sign of true quality.
In order to maintain the value of this natural product over the life of
your vehicle, you should follow the recommendations below :

• To keep your leather from bleaching out, do not allow it to be
exposed to bright sunlight for long periods of time. If you have to
leave the vehicle parked outside for long periods, cover the leather
to protect it from direct exposure to sunlight.
• Sharp objects on clothing, such as zippers, rivets or sharp pieces
on belts can leave permanent scratches or scrape marks on the
surface of the leather.
[ i] Tips
• After each time you clean the leather and at regular intervals, use
a leather preservative creme that contains UV -blockers and that
works into the leather . This creme will nourish and moisturize the leather, helping it to breathe and stay supple
. It also helps to build
up a protective coating on the surface.
• Clean the leather every 2 -3 months, and clean any areas that get
soiled.
• Remove fresh marks made by ballpoint pens, ink, lipstick, shoe
polish, etc. as soon as possible.
• Preserve the color of the leather as needed by using a special
colored leather care creme to touch up areas of uneven color. •

Cleaning and caring for leather upholstery
and trim
Natural leather requires special care and attention.
Normal cleaning
Clean soiled areas with a slightly moistened cotton or
woolen cloth.
More stubborn dirt
- More stubborn dirt can be removed using a cloth satu­
rated with a mild soap solution (2 tablespoons mild
liquid soap).
Never allow the soap solution to saturate the leather, and
make certain that no water soaks into the seams.
- Wipe off the soap solution with a soft, dry cloth.
Cleaning spots
- Remove fresh water-based spots (such as coffee, tea,
juices, blood) with an absorbent cloth or paper towel.

Leather care
- Every half year use an approved leathe r care product
(available from your A udi dealer) to care for the leat her .
- App ly the produc t very spar ingly.
- Wip e it off wit h a dam p cloth.

Cleaning Alcantara ® (synthetic suede)
Removing dust and dirt
- Moiste n a clot h, squeeze out excess water and wipe down
the seat surfac es.
Removing stains
- Moisten a clo th wi th lukewarm water or with diluted
ethyl (rubbing ) alcohol.
- Dab at the stain. Start at the o utside and work inwards .
- Once the stain is no longer visib le, use a soft dry cloth or
tissue to soak up the moisture .
Do not use leather cleaning products on A lcantara .
You may use a suitable shampoo for removing dust and di rt.
Dust and grit in the pores and seams can scratch and damage the
surface. If the car is le ft standing in the sun for long periods, the
A lcantara should be protected against direct sunl ight to p revent it
from fading . Slight color variations will deve lop in normal use and
are not an indication of ma ter ial deterioration. .,

• the engine compartment heats up because the vehicle is parked
in intense sunlight.
& WARNING
• To reduce the risk of personal injury never touch the radiator
fan.
• The auxiliary electric fan is temperature controlled and can
switch on suddenly even when the engine is not running .
• The auxiliary radiator fan switches on automatically when the
engine coolant reaches a certain temperature and will continue to
run until the coolant temperature drops. •
Brake fluid
Checking brake fluid level
The brake fluid level can be checked with a quick glance.

Before you check anything in the engine compartment,
always read and heed all WARNINGS=> & in "Working in
the engine compartment" on
page 217.
-Read the brake fluid level from the brake fluid reservoir
=> fig. 143. The brake fluid level must be between the
"MIN" and "MAX" markings.
The brake fluid reservoir is located behind the rear partition of the
engine compartment on the left side~ page 218.
The fluid level may drop slightly after some time due to the auto ­
matic adjustment of the brake pads. This is not cause for alarm.
If the brake fluid level falls considerably below the "MIN" mark, the
brake warning/indicator light (U.S. models:
BRAKE, Canadian models:
(Cf))) will come on~ page 19 and~ page 33. Do not continue to
operate the vehicle. The complete brake system should be thor­
oughly checked by an authorized Audi dealer or other qualified
facility and the cause corrected. If the brake fluid level is too low, the
brake warning/indicator light will illuminate. Contact an authorized
Audi dealer
immediately. •
Changing brake fluid
Have the brake fluid changed by an experienced techni­
cian.
Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air. If the water content in the
brake fluid is too high, corrosion in the brake system may result
after a period of time . The boiling point of the brake fluid will also
decrease considerably and decrease braking performance.
Therefore, the brake fluid must be changed
every two years. Always
use new brake fluid which conforms to Federal Motor Vehicle Stan­
dard "FMVSS 116 DOT 4".
The brake fluid reservoir can be difficult to reach, therefore, we
recommend that you have the brake fluid changed by your autho­
rized
Audi dealer. Your dealer has the correct tools, the right brake
fluid and the know-how to do this for you.

Because of the problem of proper disposal of brake fluid as well as
the special tools required and the necessary expertise, we recom ­
mend that you have the brake fluid changed by your authorized Audi
dea ler. •
Battery
General information
Your vehicle is equipped with a specia l battery, an AGM battery. This
ba ttery is loca ted in the luggage compar tment and must be
replaced with an original equipment battery. Under normal oper­
ating conditions, the battery is
ma inten anc e-free .
Have the battery checked when you take your vehicle in for service .
You a re well advised to replace a battery that is o lder than 5 years .
Disconn ecting th e batt ery te rmin als
Some vehicle functions (power w indow regulators, for example) are
lost if the battery terminals are disconnected. These functions have
to be relearned after the battery terminals are connected again. To prevent this, the battery should only be disconnected from the
vehic le electrical sys tem when abso lutely necessary for repairs .
Vehi cles not dri ven for lo ng p eriods
If you are going to let your vehic le stand for a long time and n ot
drive it, you should remember there are e lectrica l components
whic h are still functioning and they will draw energy from the
battery and drain it, for example, the engine immobilizer. To prevent
t his, you can eithe r charge the batte ry occasionally to keep it in
good working condition or you can disconnect the negative cable
on the battery.
W int er op erati on
During the winter months, batte ry capacity tends to decrease as
temperatures drop . This is because more power is also consumed
whi le starting, and the headlights, rear window defogger, etc ., are
used more often.
Avoid unnecessary power consumption, particularly in city traffic or
when trave ling o nly short distances . Let your authorized Audi dealer
check the capacity of the vehicle battery before winter sets in
~ page 232. A we ll charged battery will not only preven t starting
problems when the weather is cold, but will also last longer.
Repla cing batter y
The new battery must hav e the same capacity, voltage ( 12 volts),
amperage, construction and p lug sea ling, as the orig inal battery .
Specifications are listed on the battery housing. Batteries specia lly
developed by Aud i fulfill the main tenance, output, and safe ty
requirements. ...,

When instal ling the battery, make sure the ignition and all electrica l
consumers are switched off~

We recommend that you use maintenance -free or c yc le-re sis­
tant/leak -proof
batteries according to the standards TL 825 06 (from
December 1997) and VW 7 50 73 (from August 2001 ) .
Rep lacing the battery should be carried by a qualified workshop .
Please follow the instruct ions on the battery cover.

• All work on the battery requ ires technical knowledge . Please
contact an Audi dealership or another authorized facility for ques ­
t ions about the battery -dange r of acid burns and explosion hazard!
• T he battery must not be opened! Do not try to change the
battery 's liquid level, otherwise detona ting gas will escape from the
battery -explosion hazard I
• The AGM battery in the luggage compartmen t cannot lea k,
because the electrolyte for this battery is absorbed into a special
glass mat. Th is leak -proof battery must not be replace with a
conventional battery .
• Make sure the ventilation hose on the side of the battery is
connected, otherwise fumes or battery acid can leak out.
• Battery holder and term inals a lways have to be secured correctly.

Because of the proble m of proper d isposal of a battery, we recom ­
mend your authorized Audi dealer change the battery for you.
Batteries contain sul furic acid and lead and m ust always be
disposed of properly in compliance with all environmenta l regula ­
t ions. Disposing of vehic le batteries improperly is ve ry dangerous to
the environment . Make sure that the removed battery cannot over­
balance, otherwise su lfur ic ac id might escape!
[ i ] Tip s
If your vehic le is left standing for severa l weeks at extreme ly low
temperatures, the vehicle battery should be removed and stored
where it will not freeze. Th is will prevent it from being damaged and
having to be replaced .•

When it is no longer needed, unscrew the towline eye and put it
back into the on-board toolkit. Make sure to have the towline eye
stored in the vehicle at all times.
When installing the grill for the air duct, be sure that the tabs on the gril l are first inserted into their guides on the vehicle. Then push the
grill into position.
& WARNING
If the towing loop is not screwed in as far as it will go, the thread
can pull out when the vehicle is towed -potential risk of an
accident. •
Rear towing loop
Do not install the rear towing loop until it is needed.

On the r ight side under the rear bumper there is a threaded
hole for the towing loop . The threaded hole is protected by
a cover.
- Remove the towing loop from the vehicle toolkit
=::> page 264.
-Remove the cover. -
Screw the towing loop tightly into the threaded hole as
far as it will go.
When it is no longer needed, unscrew the towing loop and put it
back into the vehicle toolkit. Be sure to have the towing loop stored
in the vehicle at all times.
& WARNING
If the towing loop is not screwed in as far as it will go, the thread
ca n pull out when the vehicle is towed -potential risk of an
accident. •
