a c c o m p a n i e d b y a n a u d i b l e
s i g n a l a n d a m e s s a g e o n t h e i n s t r u -

m a l f u n c t i o n o f t h e e l e c t r o n i c b r a k e
f o r c e d i s t r i b u t i o n w h i c h c o u l d r e s u l t
in loss of control of the vehicle when
braking.

started.

i n s t r u m e n t p a n e l . Deactivation
I n e x c e p t i o n a l c o n d i t i o n s ( s t a r t i n g a
v e h i c l e w h i c h i s b o g g e d d o w n , s t u c k
i n s n o w , o n s o f t g r o u n d . . . ) , i t m a y b e
advisable to deactivate the ASR and
E S P s y s t e m s , s o t h a t t h e w h e e l s
c a n m o v e f r e e l y a n d r e g a i n g r i p .
Press the "ESP OFF" b u t t o n , l o -
cated in the centre of the dash-
board.

s u s p e n s i o n , m a n u a l a d j u s t m e n t o f
g r o u n d c l e a r a n c e t o t h e i n t e r m e d i a t e
p o s i t i o n i m p r o v e s f u r t h e r t h e a b i l i t y
t o m a k e p r o g r e s s i n d e e p s n o w ( s e e
the relevant paragraph).
I n e x t r e m e l y s e v e r e c o n d i t i o n s ( s n o w
o n t o p o f i c e , s a n d , d e e p m u d … ) , i t c a n
b e u s e f u l t o d e a c t i v a t e t h e
ESP/ASR
s y s t e m s t o a l l o w a d e g r e e o f w h e e l
spin and so recover grip.
T h e a n t i - s k i d r e g u l a t i o n ( a l s o k n o w n a s
T r a c t i o n C o n t r o l ) o p t i m i s e s t r a c t i o n t o
prevent skidding of the wheels, by act-
ing on the brakes of the driving wheels
and on the engine.

MANUAL PARKING BRAKE
Mechanical device for immobilising
the vehicle when stationary. This warning lamp comes
on if the parking brake is en-
gaged or not fully released.
If the parking brake is released,
the lighting of this warning lamp
along with the STOP warning lamp
i n d i c a t e s t h a t t h e b r a k e fl u i d l e v e l
is low or a malfunction of the brake
force distributor.
It is essential to stop the vehicle.
Consult a CITROËN dealer.
Application
Pull the parking brake lever up to
immobilise your vehicle.
To facilitate the action on the lever,
you are recommended to press the
brake pedal at the same time.
In all circumstances, as a pre-
cautionary measure, engage
fi r s t g e a r .
On steep gradients, turn the steer-
ing wheel towards the pavement. Release
Press on the end of the lever
whilst pulling it then lower it fully.

ELECTRIC PARKING BRAKE
The electric parking brake combines
2 operational modes:
- AUTOMATIC
Automatic application when the engine stops and automatic re-
lease on use of the accelerator
(automatic operation by default),
- MANUAL
Manual application/release of the parking brake is always pos-
sible by pulling control A while
pressing the brake pedal. Automatic operation
Application with the engine off
With the vehicle stationary, the park-
ing brake
is automatically applied
when the engine is switched off.

With the engine running and the ve-
hicle stationary, in order to immobil-
ise the vehicle you need to manually
apply the parking brake by pulling
on control A .

Before leaving the vehicle,
check that warning lamp P on

Never leave a child alone inside the

press down fully on the clutch
pedal then press on the accelera-
tor pedal and move off.
with an automatic gearbox , ac-
celerate with the selector in posi-
tion D , M or R .
Full release of the parking brake is
c o n fi r m e d b y : - the warning lamp P on
control A and on the in-
strument panel going out,

the display of a message "hand-
brake off" on the instrument panel
screen.
When stationary, with the engine

tor pedal unnecessarily (particularly
when starting the engine, including
in neutral), as you may release the
parking brake. Activation/Deactivation of

Release
With the ignition on or the engine
running, to release the parking
brake, press on the brake pedal,
push then release control A .
The full application of the parking
b r a k e i s c o n fi r m e d b y :
- the warning lamp on con- trol A and the warning
lamp P on the instrument
panel going off,
- the display of a message "park- ing brake released" on the instru-
ment panel screen.
If you push control A without pressing the brake pedal, the parking brake
will not be released and the message
"Apply foot on brake" will be dis-
played on the instrument panel.
When stationary, with the en-
gine running, do not press the
accelerator pedal unneces-
sarily, as you may release the
parking brake. Maximum application
If necessary, you can utilise
maxi-
mum application of the parking
brake. It is obtained by means of a
long pull on control A , until you see
the message "Max application of the
handbrake" and a beep is heard.
Maximum application is essential:
- in the case of a vehicle towing a caravan or a trailer, if the au-
tomatic functions are activated
but you are applying the parking
brake manually,
-
when the gradient you are parked on is variable in its effect (e.g. on
a ferry, in a lorry, during towing).
- in the case of towing, a loaded vehicle or parking on a gradient,
turn the front wheels towards the
pavement and engage a gear
when you park.
- after a maximum application, the release time will be longer. Particular situations
In certain situations (starting the en-
gine...), the parking brake can auto-
matically alter its level of application.
This is normal operation.
To advance your vehicle a few cen-
timetres without starting the engine,
but with the ignition on, press on the
brake pedal and release the parking
brake
by pushing then releasing
control A .
The full release of the parking brake

(red) on the instrument panel going
off and the display of a message
"handbrake off" on the instrument
panel screen.
If the parking brake malfunctions
while applied o r i f t h e b a t t e r y i s fl a t ,
an emergency release is still pos-
sible.
To ensure correct operation of the
parking brake and therefore your
safety, the number of successive
application/release operations is
limited to eight.
If this number is exceeded, you are
warned by the message "Parking
brake faulty" and a warning lamp
fl a s h e s .

Dynamic emergency braking
In the event of a failure of the vehi-
cle’s main braking system or in an
exceptional situation (e.g. driver taken
ill, under instruction, etc) pull and
hold control A to stop the vehicle.
The electronic stability programme
( E S P ) p r o v i d e s s t a b i l i t y d u r i n g d y -
namic emergency braking.
If the dynamic emergency braking
malfunctions, one of the following
messages will be displayed on the
instrument panel display:
- "Parking brake faulty".
- "Parking brake control faulty". I f a f a i l u r e o f t h e E S P s y s -
tem is signalled by the light-
ing of this warning lamp,
then braking stability is not
guaranteed. In this event, stability
must be assured by the driver by
repeating alternate "pull release" ac-
tions on control A .
The dynamic emergency
braking must only be used in
exceptional circumstances. Emergency parking brake
release
In the event of the electric parking
brake failing to release, an emer-
gency device can be used to release
the parking brake manually, provid-
ed that it is possible to immobilise
the vehicle while the procedure is
carried out.
If you can start the vehicle: with
the engine running, immobilise
the vehicle by applying the foot
brake while the operation is be-
ing carried out.
If you are unable to start the ve-
h i c l e ( fl a t b a t t e r y f o r e x a m p l e ) : d o
not use this device and contact
a CITROËN dealer. However, if
y o u a r e o b l i g e d t o p r o c e e d , fi r s t
immobilise your vehicle securely
and then follow the instructions
below.
