Inspection and main
tenance following
rough road operation

After operating the vehicle in rough road conditions, be sure to perform the following inspection and maintenance procedures: ●
Check that the vehicle has not been damaged by rocks, gravel, etc.
●
Carefully wash the vehicle with water. After washing, drive the vehicle slowly while lightlydepressing the brake pedal in order to dry out the brakes. If the brakes still do not function properly, we recommend you to have the brakes checked as soon as possible.
●
Remove the insects, dried grass, etc. clogging the radiator core.
●
After crossing a stream, be sure to have the following items inspected at a MITS
UBISHI MOTORS Authorized
Service Point and take the necessary measures. • Check the brake system and,
if necessary, have it serv-
iced. • Check the engine, transmissi
on, transfer, and differential
oil or grease level and turbid
ity. If the oil or grease is
milky, it indicates water co
ntamination. Replace it with
new oil or grease. • Grease the propeller shaft.• Check the inside of the vehi
cle. If ingress of water is
found, dry the carpet etc. • Inspect the headlamps. If th
e headlamp bulb is flooded
with water, we recommend you to have it drained.

Tyres and wheelsSince the driving torque can be
applied to the 4 wheels, the per-
formance of the vehicle when
operating in 4-wheel drive is
greatly affected by th
e condition of the tyres.
Pay close attention to the tyres. ●
Install specified tyres on all
wheels. Refer to “Tyres and
wheels” on page 9-13.
●
Be sure to fit all 4 tyres an
d wheels of the same size and
type. When replacement of any of th
e tyres or wheels is neces-
sary, replace all of them.
●
All tyres should be rotated
whenever the wear difference
between the front and rear tyres is recognizable.

Good vehicle performance cannot be expected if there is a dif- ference in wear between tyres. Refer to “Tyre rotation” on page 8-21. ●
Check the tyre inflation pressure regularly.
●
If the tyre inflation pressure
is inappropriate, the transfer
gear may make some noise and shock while changing the drive mode.
To w i n gIf towing is necessary, we recommend you to have it done byyour MITSUBISHI MOTORS Authorized Service Point or acommercial tow
truck service.
In the following cases, transpor
t the vehicle using a tow truck.
●
The engine runs but the vehicle does not move or abnor- mal noise is produced.
●
Inspection of the vehicle’s und
erside reveals that oil or
some other fluid is leaking.
Only when you cannot receive a towing service from a MIT- SUBISHI MOTORS Authorized
Service Point or commercial
tow truck service, tow your ve
hicle carefully in accordance
with the instructions given in “Towing” on page 6-29.

Always use tyres of the same size, same type, and same brand, and which have no wear differences.Using tyres which differ in size, type, brand or the degree of wear will cause excessive loading, resulting in possible damage to the drive system.
CAUTION
!●
Be sure to shift the tran
sfer shift lever to the “2H”
position. Never try to tow with the transfer shift lever in the “4H”, “4HLc” or “4LLc” positions and with any of the wheels on
the ground (Type A or B).
This could result in damage to the vehicle’s driving system, or the vehicle could become separated from the tow truck and unexpected
accident might result.
If you cannot shift the tr
ansfer shift lever to “2H”
position or the transmission is malfunctioning or damaged, transport the ve
hicle with all the wheels
on a carriage (Type C or D) as illustrated.

Operation of ABS is not rest
ricted to situations where
brakes are applied suddenly. Th
is system may also operate
to prevent wheel lock when
you are driving over man-
holes, steel road-work plates,
or the vehicle is driven over
steps or level differences in
the road, road markings, or
other surfaces which are diffic
ult for the wheels to grip.
●
When the ABS is activated, you may feel the brake pedal pulsation and the vibrations of the vehicle body and steer- ing wheel. You may also hear
a characteristic noise. At
this time, you may feel as if the pedal attempts to resistbeing depressed. This is a normal result of the ABS operation, and does not indicate a problem.In this situation, to let the ABS work for you, just hold the brake pedal down more firmly. Do not pump the brake. This will result
in reduced braking perform-
ance.
●
When the engine starts and
after starting to drive, you
might hear operation noise fr
om the engine compartment
or feel a shock from the brake pedal. This is normal. The ABS is performing a self-check.
●
The ABS will operate after the vehicle has accelerated to a speed in excess of approximately 10 km/h (6 mph). It stops operating when the vehi
cle decelerates to low speed
below approximately 5 km/h (3 mph).
CAUTION
!●
Even the ABS cannot prevent the natural laws of physics from acting on th
e vehicle. It cannot for
instance avoid accidents that
may result from exces-
sive speed on bends or fo
llowing another vehicle too
closely or aquaplaning. It should remain the driver’stask to observe safety pr
ecautions to judge speeds
and brake applications corr
ectly in such conditions.
●
Be sure to use tyres of the same type and size on 4 wheels. If tyre types or sizes are mixed, ABS may not func- tion normally.
●
Never install a limited slip
differential, which is not
MITSUBISHI MOTORS genuine parts, as the ABSmay not function normally. We recommend you to consult a MITSUBISHI MOTORS Authorized
Service Point.

Power steering system

When the engine is stopped, the
power steering system will not
function and it will require greater
manual effort to operate the
steering wheel. Keep this in mind
in particular when towing the
vehicle. Never turn off the engine while driving. Periodically check the power steering fluid level.

To store the flat tyre or spare tyre

1. Attach the wheel to the spare wheel hanger (A) while
aligning the holes in the wheel with the bolts on the spare wheel hanger. Using the wheel nut wrench,
tighten the spare wheel nuts
firmly. Tightening torque 37 to 54 Nm (Achieved by applying a force of 140 to 200 N at the end of the wheel nut wrench s
upplied with the vehicle.)
CAUTION
!●
After changing the tyre
and driving the vehicle
about 1,000 km (620 miles)
, retighten the wheel nuts
to make sure that they have not come loose.
●
If the steering wheel vibr
ates when driving after
changing the tyre, we recommend you to have thetyres checked for balance.
●
Do not mix one type of tyre with another or use a different size from the one listed. This would causeearly wear and poor handling.

Check the tyres for cuts, cracks and other damage. Replace the tyres if there are deep cuts or
cracks. Also check each tyre for
pieces of metal or pebbles. The use of worn tyres can be very dangerous because of thegreater chance of skidding or h
ydroplaning. The tread depth of
the tyres must exceed 1.6 mm in
order for the tyres to meet the
minimum requirement for use.
Tread wear indicators will appear in six places on the surface of the tyre as the tyre wears, thereby indicating that the tyre no longer meets the minimum requ
irement for use. When these
wear indicators appear, the tyre
s must be replaced with new
ones. When replacement of any of the tyres is necessary, replace all of them.Replacing tyres and wheels

Tyre rotation

Tyre wear varies with vehicl
e conditions, road surface condi-
tions and individual driver’s driving habits. To equalize the wear and help extend tyre life, it is recommended to rotate the tyres immediately after discovery
of abnormal wear, or when-
ever the wear difference between
the front and rear tyres is rec-
ognizable. When rotating tyres, check fo
r uneven wear and damage.
Abnormal wear is usually cause
d by incorrect tyre pressure,
improper wheel alignment, ou
t of balance wheel, or severe
braking. We recommend you to have it checked to determinethe cause of irregular tread wear.

Even if a wheel has the same rim size and offset as the specified type of wheel
, its shape may prevent it
from being fitted correctly. We recommend you toconsult a specialist before
using wheels that you
