For vehicles with an A/T, when
removing the key, first set the
selector lever to the “P” (PARK) position, and then turn the key to the “LOCK” position, and remove it.Vehicles with A/T
CAUTION
!●
Do not remove the ignition key from the ignition switch while driving.
The steering wheel will be
locked, causing loss of control.
●
If the engine is stopped wh
ile driving, the brake ser-
vomechanism will cease to function and brakingefficiency will deteriorat
e. Also, the power steering
system will not function and it will require greater manual effort to op
erate the steering.
●
Do not leave the key in the “ON” position for a long time when the engine is not running, doing so will cause the battery to be discharged.
●
Do not turn the key to the “START” position when the engine is running, doing so could damage thestarter motor.

Starting
E00601600488
Tips for starting●
Do not continuously operate the starter motor longer than 10 seconds; doing so could run down the battery. If the engine does not start, turn the ignition switch back to“LOCK” position, wait a few seconds, and then try again. Trying repeatedly with the starter motor still turning will damage the starter mechanism.
CAUTION
!●
Remove the key when leaving the vehicle. In some countries, it is pr
ohibited to leave the key on
the vehicle when parked.
WARNING
!●
Never run the engine in a cl
osed or poorly ventilated
area any longer than is needed to move your vehiclein or out of the area. Carbon monoxide gases are odourless and can be fatal.CAUTION
!●
Never attempt to start the engine by pushing or pull- ing the vehicle.
●
Do not run the engine at hi
gh rpm or drive the vehi-
cle at high speed until th
e engine has had chance to
warm up.
●
Release the ignition key as
soon as the engine starts
to avoid damaging the starter motor.
●
If your vehicle is equipp
ed with a turbocharger, do
not stop the engine immedi
ately after high-speed or
uphill driving. First allow the engine to idle to give the turbocharger a chance to cool down.

NOTE●
On petrol-powered vehicles, the upward shift may be made automatically in sports mode when the engine revo- lutions rises and approaches
the tachometer’s red zone
(the red-coloured part
of the tachometer dial).
●
In sports mode, only the 5 forward gears can be selected. To reverse or park the vehicle, move the selector lever to the “R” (REVERSE) or “P” (P
ARK) position as required.
●
To maintain good running performance, the transmission may refuse to perform an upshift when the selector lever is moved to the “+ (SHIFT UP)” position at certain vehi-cle speeds. Also, to prevent
over-revving of the engine,
the transmission may refuse to perform a downshift when the lever is moved to the “— (SHIFT DOWN)” position atcertain vehicle speeds.
●
In sports mode, downward shifts are made automatically when the vehicle slows down.
When the vehicle stops, 1st
gear is automatically selected.
●
When driving away on a slippe
ry road, push the selector
lever forward into the “+
(SHIFT UP)” position. This
causes the transmission to shift into the 2nd gear which is better for smooth driving away on a slippery road. Push the selector lever to the “— (SHIFT DOWN)” side to shiftback to the 1st gear.
Sports mode indicator
E00612300254
In sports mode, the currently selected position is indicated by the indicator (A) shown on the instrument panel.NOTE●
When sports mode is select
ed, the “D” indicator goes off.

E00615200023
When the “N” indication lamp
(A) blinks with the “D”
(DRIVE) position or “Sports m
ode” being selected, the A/T
may be malfunctioning.
When the A/T fluid temper
ature warning lamp comes
on
E00615300109
The A/T fluid temperature warn
ing lamp comes on when the
automatic transmission fluid
temperature becomes abnormally
high. Normally the warning lamp comes on when the ignitionswitch is turned to the “ON” pos
ition, and then will go out after
a few seconds.
CAUTION
!●
If the “N” indication lamp blinks while driving in the “D” (DRIVE) position or “Sports Mode”, the A/T safety device may be operating due to a mal-function. We recommend you to have your vehicle inspected as soon as possible.
CAUTION
!●
If the lamp comes on, re
duce the engine speed and
stop the vehicle in a safe
area. Then set the selector
lever to “P” (PARK) posi
tion and idle the engine
until the warning
lamp goes off.
When the warning
lamp goes off, resume norm
al driving. If the warn-
ing lamp does not go off, we recommend you to have your vehicle inspected.

Waiting
E00604600245
For short waiting periods, such as
at traffic signals, the vehicle
can be left in gear and held st
ationary with the service brake.
For longer waiting periods with the engine running, place theselector lever in the “N” (NEUTRAL) position and apply the parking brake, while holding the vehicle stationary with the service brake.
Parking
E00604700161
To park the vehicle, first bring it to a complete stop, fully engage the parking brake, and th
en move the selector lever to
the “P” (PARK) position. If you are going to leave the vehicle unattended, always switch off the engine and remove the ignition key.NOTE●
On a slope, be sure to apply the parking brake before moving the selector lever to the “P” (PARK) position. If you move the selector lever to the “P” (PARK) position before applying the parking brake, it may be difficult todisengage the selector lever
from the “P” (PARK) position
when next you drive the vehicle, requiring application of a strong force to the selector
lever to move from the “P”
(PARK) position.
CAUTION
!●
Never hold the vehicle statio
nary on a hill using the
accelerator pedal (without
using the brake pedal).
Always apply the parking brake and/or service brakes.

NOTE●
Shifting of the lever among “2H”
↔
“4H”
↔
“4HLc” should only be done at speeds below 100 km/h (62 mph).
●
When shifting from “2H” to “4H” in cold weather while the vehi
cle is in motion, the transmission gear may make some noise.
In cold weather, try to shift the gear while the vehicle is stopped.
●
When the lever is shifted between “2H”
↔
“4H” or “4H”
↔
“4HLc” while the vehicle is stopped, the 2WD/4WD operation
indication lamp blinks while the selection is in process. Driv
e slowly and normally after confirming that the lamp is illumi-
nated. Refer to “2WD/4WD operation indication lamp” on page 4-38.
●
Do not move the selector lever while the 2WD/4WD operation indication lamp is blinking.
●
On vehicles with cruise control, when the lever is shifted among “2H”
↔
“4H”
↔
“4HLc” while the cruise control is acti-
vated, the transfer gear may make some noise.

a safe place, turn off the
engine for a few moments. Restart the engine. The lamps should resume
normal operation. If the
lamps continue to blink, we recommend you to havethe vehicle checked as soon as possible.

If one wheel starts to spin fr
eely and the vehicle becomes stuck
and cannot be freed even using 4-
wheel drive, the rear differen-
tial lock switch (A) can be used
to activate the rear differential
lock for extra traction.
Operating the rear differential lock1. Move the transfer shift le
ver to “4LLc” or “4HLc” posi-
tion.
2. To activate the rear differentia
l lock, press the rear differ-
ential lock switch (1).
3. To deactivate the rear differ
ential lock, press the rear dif-
ferential lock switch (2).
CAUTION
!●
Operate the rear differenti
al lock switch after the
wheels are stopped. Operati
ng the switch with the
wheels turning may cause the vehicle to dart inunexpected directions.
