55tem, make sure that it is engaged in the
securing rings on both sides.
To ensure that the child restraint system
can perform its protective function as
intended, the backrest of the outer seat in
the 2nd row must be in the upright position. G
Risk of injury
Please note that child restraint systems
cannot provide a protective function if they
or their retaining systems are damaged or
subjected to a load in an accident. This
could result in serious or even fatal injuries
to the secured child in the event of an acci-
dent, heavy braking or a sudden change in
direction.
For this reason, have child restraint sys-
tems and their anchorages which have
been damaged or subjected to a load in an
accident checked immediately at a quali-
fied specialist workshop.

(Y page 81). The anchor fittings on the outer seats in the

stered lining.

TopTether
TopTether provides an additional connection
between the child restraint system secured
with ISOFIX and the rear seat. It helps reduce
the risk of injury even further.
The TopTether anchorages are attached to
the rear of the backrests:

Make sure that the belt:
R is not twisted
R is routed between the backrest and the
luggage compartment cover* if the lug-
gage compartment cover* is fitted
R is routed between the backrest and the
safety net* if the safety net* is fitted G
Risk of injury
Do not secure the TopTether hook* to the
loop underneath the TopTether anchorage
if you are securing a child restraint system
in the 3rd row of seats*. The child restraint
system is then not secure. An incorrectly
fitted child restraint system cannot perform
its intended protective function in the event
of an accident, and could even lead to inju-
ries. Safety

Points to remember
You will find information about folding down
the rear bench seat in the "Luggage compart-
ment enlargement" section (Y page 190).
Depending on the vehicle's equipment, the
seats can adjusted either manually/electri-
cally or electrically*. G
Risk of injury
The seats can still be adjusted when there
is no key in the ignition lock. For this rea-
son, children should never be left unsuper-
vised in the vehicle. They could become
trapped when adjusting a seat. G
Risk of accident
Only adjust the driver's seat when the vehi-
cle is stationary. You will otherwise be dis-
tracted from the road and traffic conditions
and you could lose control of the vehicle as
a result of the seat moving. This could
cause an accident. G
Risk of injury
Make sure that nobody can become trap-
ped when you adjust the seat. Controls

! When you move the seats, make sure that
there are no objects in the footwell or
behind the seats. Otherwise, you could
damage the seats and the objects.
! Make sure that the sun visor is folded up
before setting the backrest angle and head
restraint height. Otherwise, the head
restraint and sun visor could collide when
the head restraint is fully extended.

restraint up into the upright position. This
reduces the risk of injury to the passenger
in the event of an accident.

passengers in the rear in the event of an
accident.
If you wish to remove the head restraints from
the outer seats in the 2nd row of seats, you
must move that seat as far back as possible
(Y page 81) and fold the backrest forward

Risk of injury
Once passengers have got into or out of the
vehicle, make sure that:
R the outer seats in the 2nd row are locked
in position
R the outer seat backrests in the 2nd row
of seats are upright and locked in posi-
tion
The outer seats in the 2nd row are only
locked if the lock verification indicator is
folded in and the indicator area is barely
visible.
If the backrests are not locked in position:
R Sharp braking
R A sudden change of direction
R An accident
could cause the backrests to fold forwards
and not provide the intended level of
restraint, thereby resulting in additional
serious or even fatal injury. Easy-entry feature The release lever for the easy-entry feature is
located on the entry side on the back of each

Loading and stowing
187
Luggage net behind the front seats
1
Luggage net Loading guidelines
G
Risk of injury
Secure and position the load as described
in the loading guidelines.
Otherwise, vehicle occupants could
be injured by the load being thrown around
in the event of sharp braking, a sudden
change in direction or an accident. This also
applies to seats which have been removed.
You will find further information in the
"Securing a load" section. Even if you follow all the loading guidelines,
the load will increase the risk of injury in the
event of an accident.
G
Risk of poisoning
Keep the tailgate closed when the engine is
running. Otherwise, you could be poisoned
by exhaust fumes entering the vehicle.
The handling characteristics of a laden vehi-
cle are dependent on the distribution of the
load within the vehicle. You should therefore
load your vehicle as shown in the illustrations. Load distribution
Observe the following notes when transport-
ing a load:
R
When transporting a load, never exceed the
maximum permissible gross vehicle weight Controls
