For maximum cooling use the A/C and recirculation
buttons at the same time.
²Economy Mode
If economy mode is desired, press the A/C button to turn
off the indicator light and the A/C compressor. Then,
move the temperature control to the desired temperature.
Automatic Temperature Control (ATC) Ð If
Equipped
Automatic Operation
The Infrared Climate Control System automatically
maintains the climate in the cabin of the vehicle at the
comfort levels desired by the driver and passenger. To
accomplish this, the system gathers information from the

cabin infrared sensor mounted between the sun-visors
and from various sensors located throughout the vehicle.
The controls on the climate control provide the system
with operator input. Other sensors take account of ve-
hicle speed, A/C pressure, outside temperature, and
engine cooling temperature. Using all of these inputs, the
system automatically adjusts airflow temperature, air-
flow distribution, airflow volume, and the amount of
outside air recirculation. This maintains a comfortable
temperature even under changing conditions.
Operation of the system is quite simple.
1. Turn the Mode Control knob (on the right) and the
Blower Control knob (on the left) to AUTO.
NOTE:The AUTO position performs best for front seat
occupants only.2. Dial in the temperature you would
like the system to maintain by rotating
the Temperature Control knob.
Once the comfort level is selected, the system will main-
tain that level automatically using the heating system.
Should the desired comfort level require air conditioning,
the system will automatically make the adjustment.
You will experience the greatest efficiency by simply
allowing the system to function automatically. Selecting
the ªOº (Off) position on the blower control stops the
system completely and closes the outside air intake.
72ÉF (22ÉC) is the recommended setting for maximum
comfort for the average person; however, this may vary.

3. Apply the parking brake.
4. Start the engine.
5. Release the clutch pedal (manual transmission).
6. Rotate the steering wheel
1¤2turn to the left.
7. Press the ªESP OFFº button located in the lower
switch bank below the climate control four times within
twenty seconds. The ªESP/TCS Indicatorº light should
turn on and turn off two times.
8. Rotate the steering wheel back to center and then an
additional
1¤2turn to the right.
9. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position and then
back to the ON position. If the sequence was completed
properly, the ªESP/TCS Indicatorº light will blink sev-
eral times to confirm HSA is disabled.
10. Repeat these steps if you want to return this feature
to its previous setting.
HDC (Hill Descent Control) ± If Equipped
HDC is only intended for low speed off-road driving.
HDC maintains vehicle speed while descending hills in
off-road driving conditions by applying the brakes when
necessary.
When enabled, HDC senses the terrain and activates
when the vehicle is descending a hill. HDC speed may be
adjusted by the driver to suit the driving conditions. The
speed corresponds to the transmission gear selected.
Gear Approximate HDC Set Speed
1st 1 mph (1.5 km/h)
2nd 3 mph (4.5 km/h)
D (Drive) 7.5 mph (12 km/h)
R (Reverse) 1 mph (1.5 km/h)
N (Neutral) 3 mph (4.5 km/h)
However, the driver can override HDC operation by
applying the brake to slow the vehicle down below the

HDC control speed. Conversely, if more speed is desired
during HDC control, the accelerator pedal will increase
vehicle speed in the usual manner. When either the brake
or the accelerator is released, HDC will control the
vehicle at the original set speed.
NOTE:HDC is available on vehicles equipped with the
MP1522 transfer case.
²The transfer case must be in 4WD low range to enable
HDC.
²HDC is enabled only when the ªHill Descent Control
Indicatorº light in the instrument cluster is on solid.
²HDC will NOT activate when the automatic transmis-
sion is in ªPº (Park).
²HDC will NOT activate on level ground.
²HDC will NOT activate at vehicle speeds above 30
mph (50 km/h).The ªHill Descentº button is located in the lower switch
bank below the climate control.
Enabling HDC
Shift the transfer case into 4WD low range.

Partial Off Ð 2WD Vehicles & 4WD Vehicles in 2WD
& 4WD High Range
The ªPartial Offº mode is intended for driving in deep
snow, sand, or gravel. This mode raises the threshold for
TCS and ESP activation, which allows for more wheel
spin than what ESP normally allows.
The ªESP OFFº button is located in the lower switch bank
below the climate Control. To enter the ªPartial Offº
mode, momentarily depress the ªESP OFFº button and
the9ESP/TCS Indicatorº light will illuminate. To turn the
ESP on again, momentarily depress the9ESP OFF9button
and the9ESP/TCS Indicatorº light will turn off. This will
restore the normal ªESP Onº mode of operation.
NOTE:To improve the vehicle's traction when driving
with snow chains, or when starting off in deep snow,
sand, or gravel, it may be desirable to switch to the
ªPartial Offº mode by momentarily depressing the ªESP
OFFº button. Once the situation requiring ªPartial Offº

mode is overcome, turn ESP back on by momentarily
depressing the ªESP OFFº button. This may be done
while the vehicle is in motion.
Full Off Ð 4WD Vehicles in 4WD High & 4WD Low
Range
The ªFull Offº mode is intended for off-highway and
off-road use when ESP stability features could inhibit
vehicle maneuverability due to trail conditions.
The ªESP OFFº button is located in the lower switch bank
below the climate Control. To enter ªFull Offº mode,
depress and hold the ªESP Offº button for 5 seconds
while the vehicle is stopped with the engine running.
After 5 seconds, the ªESP/TCS Indicatorº light will
illuminate and an ªESP Offº message will appear in the
odometer. Press and release the trip odometer button
located on the instrument cluster to turn off this message.
In this mode, ESP and TCS are turned off (except for the
ªlimited slipº feature described in the TCS section) untilthe vehicle reaches a speed of 40 mph. At speeds over 40
mph, the system automatically switches to ªPartial Offº
mode, described above. When the vehicle speed returns
to less than 35 mph, the ESP system will return to ªFull
Offº mode. The ªESP/TCS Indicatorº light is always
illuminated when ESP is off. To turn ESP on again,
momentarily depress the ªESP Offº button. This will
restore the normal ªESP Onº mode of operation.
NOTE:
²ªFull Offº is the only operating mode for ESP in 4WD
low range. Therefore, ESP system will be in this mode
whenever the vehicle is started in 4WD low range or
the transfer case is shifted into 4WD low range.
²The ªESP OFFº message will display and a chime will
sound when the gear selector is moved from any
position to the ªPº (Park) position and then moved out
of the ªPº (Park) position. This will occur even if the
message was cleared previously.

TIRE QUALITY GRADES
The following describes the tire grading categories estab-
lished by the National highway Traffic Safety Adminis-
tration. The specific grade rating assigned by the tire's
manufacturer in each category is shown on the sidewall
of the tires on your car.
All Passenger Car Tires Must Conform to Federal Safety
Requirements in Addition to These Grades.
Treadwear
The treadwear grade is a comparative rating based on the
wear rate of the tire when tested under controlled con-
ditions on a specified government test course. For ex-
ample, a tire graded 150 would wear one and a half (1
1/2) times as well on the government course as a tire
graded 100. The relative performance of tires depends
upon the actual conditions of their use, however, andmay depart significantly from the norm due to variations
in driving habits, service practices and differences in road
characteristics and climate.
Traction Grades
The traction grades, from highest to lowest, are AA, A, B,
and C. Those grades represent the tire's ability to stop on
wet pavement as measured under controlled conditions
on specified government test surfaces of asphalt and
concrete. A tire marked C may have poor traction perfor-
mance.
WARNING!
The traction grade assigned to this tire is based on
straight-ahead braking traction tests, and does not
include acceleration, cornering, hydroplaning, or
peak traction characteristics.
