Power Window Initialize
After a power reconnect such as battery replacement,
the window index-up feature will not function until
the system is initialized.
Once power is restored:
1. Close the door.
2. Raise the window and hold the switch up for
three seconds after the window is closed.
3. Release the switch, then hold the switch up again
for three seconds and release.
Sun Visors
Pull the visor toward you, or move it to the side to help
reduce glare.
To use the lighted mirror, lift the cover.
Theft-Deterrent Systems
Vehicle theft is big business, especially in some cities.
This vehicle has theft-deterrent features, however,
they do not make it impossible to steal.
Theft-Deterrent System
This vehicle has a theft-deterrent alarm system.
The security light ashes if
a door is open and locked
with the power door
lock switch.
If this light stays on while the engine is running, the
vehicle needs service.

Immobilizer Operation
This vehicle has a passive theft-deterrent system.
The system is automatically armed when the ignition
mode transitions to off.
The immobilization system is disarmed when the ignition
mode transitions to OFF/ACCESSORY or START and
a valid transmitter is found in the vehicle.You do not have to manually arm or disarm the system.
The security light comes on if there is a problem with
arming or disarming the theft-deterrent system.
The system has one or more keyless access
transmitters that are matched to an immobilizer control
unit in the vehicle. Only a correctly matched keyless
access transmitter starts the vehicle. The vehicle
may not start if the keyless access transmitter is
damaged.
If the engine does not start and the security light comes
on, there may be a problem with the immobilizer
system. Press the START button again.
If the vehicle does not start and the keyless access
transmitter appears to be undamaged, try another
keyless access transmitter. Or, place the transmitter in
the transmitter pocket. See “NO FOBS DETECTED”
underDIC Warnings and Messages on page 3-57for
additional information. Check the fuse. SeeFuses and
Circuit Breakers on page 5-100. If the engine still does
not start with the other transmitter, the vehicle needs
service. If the engine does start, the rst transmitter may
be
faulty. See your dealer/retailer who can service the
theft-deterrent system and have a new keyless access
transmitter programmed to the vehicle.

Torque Lock (Automatic Transmission)
If you are parking on a hill and you do not shift your
transmission into PARK (P) properly, the weight of the
vehicle may put too much force on the parking pawl
in the transmission. You may nd it difficult to pull the
shift lever out of PARK (P). This is called “torque
lock.” To prevent torque lock, set the parking brake and
then shift into PARK (P) properly before you leave
the driver’s seat. To nd out how, see “Shifting
Into PARK (P)” listed previously in this section.
When you are ready to drive, move the shift lever out of
PARK (P) before you release the parking brake.
If torque lock does occur, you may need to have another
vehicle push yours a little uphill to take some of the
pressure from the transmission parking pawl, so you can
pull the shift lever out of PARK (P).
Shifting Out of Park
This vehicle is equipped with an electronic shift lock
release system. The shift lock release is designed to:
Prevent shifting out of PARK (P) unless the vehicle
is running or in Accessory mode and the regular brake
pedal is applied.The shift lock release is always functional except in the
case of an uncharged or low voltage (less than 9 volt)
battery.
If your vehicle has an uncharged battery or a battery
with low voltage, try charging or jump starting the
battery. SeeJump Starting on page 5-46
To shift out of PARK (P) use the following:
1. Apply the brake pedal.
2. Then press the shift lever button.
3. Move the shift lever to the desired position.
If you still are unable to shift out of PARK (P):
1. Fully release the shift lever button.
2. While holding down the brake pedal, press the shift
lever button again.
3. Move the shift lever to the desired position.
If you still cannot move the shift lever from PARK (P),
consult your dealer/retailer or a professional towing
service.

Automatic Dimming Rearview Mirror
with OnStar
®and Compass
The vehicle may have an automatic dimming rearview
mirror with OnStar®, a compass and map lamps.
Three OnStar®buttons are at the bottom of the mirror.
SeeOnStar®System on page 2-43for more
information on the services OnStar®provides.
Mirror Operation
The mirror automatically changes to reduce glare from
headlamps behind you. A time delay feature prevents
rapid changing from the day to night positions while
driving under lights and through traffic.
P(On/Off):The automatic dimming feature is
activated when the vehicle is started. The automatic
dimming feature is turned on or off by pressing
this button located on the lower part of the mirror. Press
and hold the button for up to three seconds to turn
this feature on or off.
T(Indicator Light):This light will turn on when the
automatic dimming feature is active.
Map Lamps
The mirror has map lamps located at the bottom of the
mirror. To manually turn the lamps on or off, press
the button next to each lamp.
Compass Operation
The mirror has an eight-point compass display in the
bottom of the mirror face.
When the ignition and the compass feature are on,
the compass will show two character boxes for
approximately two seconds. After two seconds, the
mirror will display the current compass heading.
For example, NE is displayed for north-east.
Compass Calibration
If after two seconds the display does not show a
compass heading, there may be a strong magnetic eld
interfering with the compass. Such interference may
be caused by a magnetic antenna mount, note
pad holder or similar object. If the letter C appears in
the compass window, the compass needs calibration.
The mirror compass can be calibrated by driving
the vehicle in circles at 5 mph (8 km/h) or less until the
display reads a direction.
The compass can be placed in calibration mode by
pressing and holding the left map light button until
a C appears on the compass display.

emergency services be sent to your location. If the keys

and they can send a signal to unlock the doors. For
roadside assistance, press the OnStar button and they
can contact Roadside Service for you.OnStar service is provided to you subject to the OnStar
Terms and Conditions. OnStar service can be canceled

are included in the vehicle’s OnStar Subscriber glove

information (only available in the continental U.S.).

How OnStar Service Works
The OnStar system can record and transmit vehicle
information. This information is automatically sent to an
OnStar Call Center when the OnStar button is
pressed, the emergency button is pressed, or if the
airbags or AACN system deploy. The vehicle information
usually includes your GPS location and, in the event
of a crash, additional information regarding the accident
that the vehicle has been involved in (e.g. the direction
from which the vehicle was hit). When the Virtual
Advisor feature of OnStar Hands-Free Calling is used,
the vehicle also sends OnStar your GPS location so that
we can provide services where you are located.
OnStar service cannot work unless the vehicle is in a
place where OnStar has an agreement with a wireless
service provider for service in that area. OnStar
service also cannot work unless you are in a place
where the wireless service provider OnStar has hired for
that area has coverage, network capacity and reception
when the service is needed, and technology that is
compatible with the OnStar service. Not all services
are available everywhere, particularly in remote
or enclosed areas, or at all times.Location information about the vehicle is only available
if the GPS satellite signals are available and
unobstructed.
The vehicle must have a working electrical system
(including adequate battery power) for the OnStar
equipment to operate. There are other problems OnStar
cannot control that may prevent OnStar from providing
OnStar service to you at any particular time or place.
Some examples are damage to important parts of
the vehicle in an accident, hills, tall buildings, tunnels,
weather or wireless phone network congestion.
Your Responsibility
Increase the volume of the radio if you cannot hear the
OnStar advisor. If the light next to the OnStar buttons
is red, the system is not functioning properly and should
be checked by your dealer/retailer. If the light appears
clear (no light is appearing), the OnStar subscription has
expired. Press the OnStar button to conrm that the
OnStar equipment is active.

The Universal Home Remote System provides a way to
replace up to three hand-held radio-frequency (RF)
transmitters used to activate devices such as garage
door openers, security systems, and home lighting.

Universal Home Remote System
Operation
This vehicle may have the Universal Home Remote
System. If there are three round Light Emitting Diode
(LED) indicator lights above the Universal Home Remote
buttons, follow the instructions below.
This system provides a way to replace up to three
remote control transmitters used to activate devices
such as garage door openers, security systems,
and home automation devices.
Do not use this system with any garage door opener
that does not have the stop and reverse feature.
This includes any garage door opener model
manufactured before April 1, 1982.
Read the instructions completely before attempting to
program the transmitter. Because of the steps involved,
it may be helpful to have another person assist with
programming the transmitter.
