Gearshift lever
The clutch pedal must be depressed all the way before
you can start the engine .
The manual transmission in your Audi is equipped with a n
interlock-feature.
-Depress the clutch pedal all the way.
- Start the eng ine with t he gearshift
lever i n Neutra l and
the clutch pedal depressed .

Always depress the clutch pedal fully when changing gears. Do not
hold the vehicle on a hi ll with the c lutch pedal partially depressed .
This may cause premature clutch wear or damage .

• Resting your hand on the gearshift lever knob while driving will
cause premature wear in the transmission .
• T he back -up lights go on when you shift into Reverse with the
ignition on .•

Move the shift lever all the way to t he left, press it dow n,
then pus h it forward .
Especially after driving forward, stop the vehic le completely, shift
into
Neutral and rest the shift lever briefly in Neutral before shifting
into
Reverse. •

Introduction
Your vehicle is equipped with a S tronic transmission, also called a
double -c lu tch system/transmission .
Power is transferred between the engine and the transmission by
means of two independent clutches. They replace the torque

Electronic differential lock (EOL)
The electronic differential lock monitors the rotational
speed of the drive wheels.
General notes
The electronic differential lock (EDU helps the car to start moving,
accelerate and climb a gradient on surfaces providing poor or
almost no grip. Without EDL, this would be difficult, if not impos
sible.
How the system works
Th e EDL operates automatically. It monitors the rotational speed of
the drive wheels on an axle with the help of the ABS sensors
=> page 189. If a noticeable difference in rotational speed between
the drive wheels on one axle is detected (e.g. on slippery ground
on
one side),
the spinning wheel is braked, thereby transferring power
to the other drive wheel or wheels (all-wheel drivel. This is done up
to a speed of about 60 mph (100 km/hl. Noises from the brake
system signal that wheel spin is being controlled.
Driving off
When driving off, always be sure to keep road conditions in mind as
you accelerate . If one drive wheel spins because it is on a surface
with less grip, gradually increase the pressure on the accelerator
pedal until the car starts to move. The wheel less able to transfer
power spins.
Overheating of brakes
To prevent the disc brake of the braked wheel from overheating if
subjected
to excessive loads, the EDL cuts out temporarily . The
vehicle remains operational and behaves in the same way as a
vehicle without EDL.
As soon as the brake has cooled down, EDL switches on again auto
matically.
& WARNING
• When accelerating on slippery surfaces, such as on ice or snow,
always be careful when depressing the accelerator pedal. Even
with the EDL working, the drive wheels can spin and reduce your ability to control your car. -Risk of crash!
• The increased safety afforded by EDL does not mean that you
can take safety risks. Always adapt your driving style to the road
conditions and traffic situation.

If a fault occurs in the ABS, the EDL is also not functioning . This is
indicated by the ABS warning light=>
page 20. •
Anti-Slip Regulation System (ASR)
The Anti-Slip Regulation System prevents the driven
wheels from spinning when the car is accelerating.
General notes
The Anti-Slip Regulation System (ASR) is integrated in the electronic
stabilization program (ESP). When the vehicle starts up and acceler
ates , the wheels are prevented from spinning by adjusting the
engine power to match the amount of grip available from the road
surface .
How the system works
ASR performs automatically, i.e. without the driver's intervention .
With the aid of the ABS sensors =>
page 189, ASR monitors the
speed of the driven wheels. If the wheels start to spin, the engine
torque is reduced automatically until the tires find enough grip to
lock onto the road surface . The system is active across the entire
speed range.
The ASR works in conjunction with the ABS. If a malfunction should
occur in the ABS, the ASR will also be out of action .

Wheel bolts

The design of wheel bolts is matched to the factory instal led rims . If
d ifferen t rims are fitted, the co rrect w heel bo lts wit h th e rig ht length
and correctly shaped bolt heads m ust be used. This ensures that
w hee ls are fitt ed s ecure ly a nd th at t he brake sys te m funct ions
correctly .
I n certain circums tances, yo u may no t use w heel b olts fr om a
differ ent vehicle -even if it is the same model::::;,
page 296.
&_ WARNING
Improperly tightened or maintained wheel bolts can become loose
causing loss of control , a collision and serious personal injury.
• Always keep the wheel bolts and the threads in the wheel hubs
clean so the wheel bolts can turn easily and be properly tightened.
• Never grease or oil the wheel bolts and the threads in the wheel
hubs. They can become loose while driving if greased or oiled,
even if tightened to the specified torque .
• Only use wheel bolts that belong to the rim being installed.
• Never use different wheels bolts on your vehicle.
• Always maintain the correct tightening torque for the wheel
bolts to reduce the risk of a wheel loss. If the tightening torque of
the wheel bolts is too low , they can loosen and come out when the
vehicle is moving . If the tightening torque is too high, the wheel
bolts and th reads can be damaged and the wheel can become
loose .

The specified torque for the wheel bolts is 90 ft lb (120 Nm) with a
t ole ranc e of ± 7,4 ft lb(± 1 0 Nm). To rque whee l bolts diag onally.
After changing a wheel, the torque must be checked as soon as possible with a to
rque wrench -preferab ly by an authorized Audi
dea ler o r qu alif ied wo rksh op.•
Low aspect ratio tires
Yo ur Audi is fac tory-equip ped wi th l ow asp ect rati o tires. Th ese tires
have been thorough ly tested and been selected specifically for your
mod el for thei r su per b p erfo rma nce, road feel an d handl in g u nder
a variety of driving conditions . Ask your author ized Aud i dea ler for
mo re deta ils.
T he low aspec t ra tio o f th ese t ires is ind icate d by a numera l o f 55 or
less in the t ire's size designation. The numera l represents the ratio
of the ti re's s idewa ll height in re la ti on to its tread w idth e xpress ed
in percentage. Conventiona l tires have a height/width ratio of 60 or
mo re .
The performan ce of low -aspect -ratio t ires is part icularly sensitive to
improper inflation pressure . It is therefore important that low
aspect ratio tires are inflated to the specified pressure and that the
inflation pressure is regularly checked and maintained. Tire pres
sures should be checked at least once a month and alway s before a
long trip::::;,

What you can do to a void tire and rim damage
L ow a spect ratio tires can be damaged more easi ly by impact with
potho les, curbs, gull ies or ridges on the road, particularly if the t ire
is underinflated.
In orde r to minimi ze the occurrence o f im pact da mage to th e tire s
of your vehicle, we recommend that you observe the fo llowing
p reca utions:
• Always ma intain reco mm ende d inflat io n pressu res . C heck your
tire p ressure every 2, 000 miles (3 ,000 km) and add ai r if neces sary .
• D rive car eful ly on roads with potholes, deep gullies or ridges.

dama ge you r tires . Impact w ith a curb may also cause da mage to
your tires . .,_

- Push the plasti c clip provided with t he on board tool kit
down over the wheel bo lt cap until it engages.
- Pull on the properly engaged plas tic c lip to ex tract the
cap
=> fig. 172 .
Refi tt ing
- Place the caps over the wheel bolts and push them back
1n.
The caps are there to prot ect and keep th e wheel bolts cl ean .•
Loosening and tightening the wheel bolts
The wheel bolts must be loosened before raising the
vehicle .

- Fit the wheel b olt wr ench over the wheel bolt and push it
down as far as it wi ll go .
- Close your grip around the
end of the wrench hand le for
maximum torque and turn the wheel bolts counter-c lock
wis e about
one single turn in the direct ion of arrow
=> f ig . 173 .
Tight ening
Fit the wheel b olt wr ench ove r the wheel bolt and pus h it
down as far as it wi ll go.
- Close your gri p around the
end of the wrench hand le for
ma ximum torque and turn eac h wheel bolt clockwi se
until it sits tight . _..
What do I do now? -
----------------
•
-Screw the threaded end of the alignment pin from the
tool kit hand-tight into the now vacant bolt hole
=:> page 270, fig. 177.
- Then completely unscrew the other wheel bolts as
described above.
- Take off the wheel leaving the alignment pin in the bolt
hole.
Putting on the wheel
- Lift the spare wheel and carefully slide it over the align
ment pin to guide it in place.
- Use the hexagonal socket in the screwdriver handle to
screw in and tighten all wheel bolts slightly.
- Unscrew the alignment pin and insert and tighten the
remaining wheel bolt slightly like the rest.
- Turn the jack handle counter -clockwise to lower the
vehicle until the jack is fully released.
- Use the wheel bolt wrench to tighten all wheel bolts
firmly =:> page 268. Tighten them crosswise, from one
bolt to the (approximately) opposite one, to keep the
wheel centered.
[ i J Tips
Never use the hexagonal socket in the handle of the screwdriver to
loosen or tighten the wheel bolts.
• Pull the reversible blade from the screwdriver before you use the
hexagonal socket in the handle to turn the wheel bolts.
• When mounting tires with
unidirectional tread design make sure
the tread pattern is pointed the right way~
page 272.
• The wheel bolts should be clean and easy to turn. Check for dirt
and corrosion on the mating surfaces of both the wheel and the
hub . Remove all dirt from these surfaces before remounting the
wheel. •
Notes on wheel change
Please read the information~ page 249, "New tires and replacing
tires and wheels", if you are going to use a spare tire which is
different from the tires on your vehicle.
After you change a tire:
• Check the tire pressure on the spare immediately after
mounting.
• Have the wheel bolt tightening torque checked with a torque
wrench as soon as possible by your authorized Audi dealer or a qualified service station .
• With steel and alloy wheel rims, the wheel bolts are correctly
tightened at a torque of 90 ft lb (120 Nml.
• If you notice while changing a tire that the wheel bolts are
corroded and difficult to turn, then they should be replaced before
you check the tightening torque.
• Replace the flat tire with a new one and have it installed on your
vehicle as soon as possible. Remount the wheel cover.
Until then, drive with extra care and at reduced speeds.
& WARNING
• If you are going to equip your vehicle with tires or rims which
differ from those which were factory installed, then be sure to read
the information
~ page 249, "New tires and replacing tires and
wheels".
• Always store the tools securely in luggage compartment.
Otherwise, in an accident or sudden maneuver they could fly
forward, causing injury to passengers in the vehicle.
