Electronic power control EPC
This warning/indicator light monitors the electronic
power control.
The EPC warning/indicator light (Electronic Power Control) i llumi
nates when you turn on the ignition as a function chec k.
[ i ] Tips
If this warning/indicator l ight i lluminates whi le you are driving, then
there is a malfunction in the engine electronics . Have the malfunc
t ion corrected as soon as possible by your authorized Audi dea ler or
qualified repair facility .•
Generator D
This warning/indicator light detects a malfunction in the
generator or in the vehicle's electrical system.
The D warning/indicator light illuminates when you switch on the
igni tion and must go out a fter the engine has started.
If the
D warning/indicator light illuminates while you are driving,
you shou ld contact your authorized Audi dealer. Since the vehic le battery is discharging, you should switch off any unnecessary elec
t rical consumers (for example, the air conditioner).

system) in the instrument cluster shou ld

the vehicle and turn off the engine . The water pump is not working
-this can cause engine damage. •
Electronic stabilization program (ESP) f1.
This warning/indicator light monitors the electronic stabi
lization program.
Th e warning/indicator light has the following functions:
• I t blinks while you are driving when the ESP is working .
• It illuminates when you switch on the ignition for approximate ly
2 seconds as a function check.
• It illuminates when there is a malfunction in the ESP. The
message
ESP fault! See owner's manual also appears in the instru
ment cluster display and a warning tone sounds .
• It illuminates continuously when the ESP is switched off.
• It illuminates if there is a malfunction in the ABS, since the ESP
is part of the ABS sys tem.
If the battery terminals were disconnected and re-connected , the
vehic le was jump sta rted or the battery is very weak, the ESP sensor
system goes through a learning process for the first few yards. The
warning/indicator light illuminates. The warning/indicator light
goes out as soon as the learning process is complete.
If the ESP warning/indicator light illuminates and stays on after you
have started the engine, this may mean that the control system has
temporarily switched off the ESP . If this is case, you can reactivate
th e ESP by turning the ignition off and then on again . The

-To open the side storage compartment, turn the two pins
©~fig. 269 to the vertical position.
The positive (+l battery terminal is protected by a plastic cover . This
cover must be removed to access the positive (+l terminal when
connecting jumper cables to start the engine.
Always heed the safety warnings, when working on the vehicle
battery or the vehicle electrical system to prevent injury.
The following WARNINGS are very important when
working on the battery:
Always heed the following WARNING SYMBOLS and safety pre
cautions when working on the battery.

-Always wear eye protection.
Battery acid contains sulfuric acid. Always wear
gloves and eye protection.
No
-sparks
-flames
-smoking.
When a battery is charged, it produces hydrogen
gas which is explosive and could cause personal
injury.
Always keep the battery well out of reach of chil
dren.
& WARNING
Whenever working on the battery or on the electrical system,
there is the risk of injury, accident and even fire. Read and heed the
following WARNINGS:

• Always wear eye protection. Do not let battery acid or any lead
particles get on your skin or clothing. Shield your eyes. Explosive
gases can cause blindness or other injury.
• Battery acid contains sulfuric acid. Sulfuric acid can cause
blindness and severe burns.
-Always wear gloves and eye protection. Do not tilt the
battery because acid could leak out of the ventilation openings.
- If you get battery acid in your eyes or on your skin, immedi
ately rinse with cold water for several minutes and get medical
attention.
- If you should ingest any battery acid, seek medical attention
immediately.
• Do not expose the battery to an open flame, electric sparks or
an open light.
• Do not smoke.
• Do not interchange the positive and negative cables.
• When working on the battery, be sure not to short-circuit the
terminals with tools or other metal objects. This would cause the battery to heat up very quickly, which could lead to damage or
explosion and personal injury.
• When a battery is charged, it produces hydrogen gas which is
explosive and could cause personal injury.
• Always keep the battery well out of the reach of children .
• Before work is done on the electrical system, disconnect the
negative ground cable.
• Before performing any work on the electrical system, switch off
the engine and ignition as well as any electrical equipment. The
negative cable on the battery must be disconnected. If you are just
going to replace a light bulb, then it is enough to switch off the
lights.
• Before disconnecting the battery, switch off the anti-theft
alarm system! Otherwise you will set off the alarm.

• When disconnecting the battery, first disconnect the negative
cable and then the positive cable.
• Before reconnecting the battery, make sure all electrical
consumers are switched off. Reconnect the positive cable first and
then the negative cable . Never interchange the cables -this could
start a fire!
• Never charge a frozen or a thawed-out battery . It could
explode! If a battery has frozen, then it must be replaced . A
discharged battery can freeze over at 32 °F (0
°CI.
• Make sure the vent hose is always attached to the opening on
the side of the battery.
• Never use batteries which are damaged. There is the danger of
an explosion

California Proposition 65 Warning :
• Battery posts , terminals and related accessories contain lead
and lead compounds, chemicals known to the State of California
to cause cancer and reproductive problems . Wash hands after
handling.

• Do not disconnect the vehicle battery when the ignition is
switched on or when the engine is running, otherwise, you will
damage electronic components in the electrical system.
• I f your vehicle is going to stand for a long period of time without
being driven, protect the battery from "freezing", otherwise it will
be damaged and will then have to be replaced .•
Battery charging
Starting the engine requires a well charged battery.
Always read and heed all WARNINGS below ~ & and~ &
in "Working on the battery" on page 319.
-Turn off the ignition and all electrical consumers.
- Make sure the area is well ventilated when you charge
the battery.
- Attach the red (positive
8) clamp of the charging equip
ment to the positive terminal of the battery and the black
(negative(:)) clamp to the jumper terminal.
- Only now plug the mains lead for the charging equip
ment into the wall outlet and turn it
on~ &.
-Make sure the charging rate is not over 30 amps/14.8
Volt.
-When the battery is fully charged: Turn the charging
equipment off and remove the mains lead from the wall
outlet.
- Now remove the clamps for the charging equipm ent.
A discharged battery can freeze at temperatures of only O °C . Allow
a frozen battery to thaw completely before attempting to charge it
=> ,&. . However, we recommend not using a thawed battery again
because the battery casing can be cracked due to ice formation and
can leak battery acid.
Battery charging (Maximum charging rate of 30
amps/14.8 Volt)
When charging at low voltages (e.g . with a trickle charger ), the
battery cab les do not have to be disconnected first. The battery caps
should
not be opened when charging a battery. ~

Emergency situations
General
This section is intended for trained emergency crews and per sonnel
who have the necessary tools and equipment to perform these operations.

Starting by pushing or towing

Starting with jumper cables

If th e engin e shou ld fail to start because of a discharged or weak
ba ttery , the bat te ry can be co nnected to the ba ttery of
another
vehic le, usin g a pair of jumper cables to start the engine.

& WARNING
Batteries contain electricity , acid , and gas. Any of these can cause
very serious or fatal injury. Follow the instructions below for safe
handling of your vehicle 's battery.
• Always shield your eyes and avoid leaning over the battery
whenever possible .
• A discharged battery can freeze at temperatures just below
32 °F (0 °C l. Before connecting a jumper cable, you must thaw the
frozen battery completely , otherwise it could explode .
• Do not allow battery a cid to contact eyes or skin . Flush any
contacted area with water immediately .
• Improper use of a booster battery to start a vehicle may cause
an explosion.
• Vehicle batteries generate e xplosive gases . Keep sparks, flame
and lighted cigarettes away from batteries.
• Do not try to jump start any vehicle with a low ac id level in the
battery.
• The voltage of the booster battery must also have a 12-Volt
rating . The capacity (Ahl of the booster battery should not be
lower than that of the discharged battery . Use of batteries of
different voltage or substantially different
" Ah " rating may cause
an explosion and personal injury .
• Never charge a frozen battery. Gas trapped in the ice may cause
an explosion .
• Never charge or use a battery that has been frozen . The battery
case may have be weakened.
• Use of batteries of different voltage or substantially different
capacity (Ah) rating may cause an explosion and injury . The
capacity (Ah l of the booster battery should not be lower than that
of the discharged battery .

• Applying a higher voltage booster battery will cause expensive
damage to sensitive electronic components, such as control units,
relays, radio, etc .
• There must be no electrical contact between the vehicles as
otherwise current could already start to flow as soon as the positive
( + ) terminals are connected.
[ i) Tips
• The discharged battery must be properly connected to the
vehicle's electrical system. When jump starting or charging the battery , never connect the negative ground cable to the battery
negative post because the battery manager system must be able to
detect the battery's state of charge. Always connect the negative
ground cable to the negative ground post of the battery manager
control unit .•
Use of jumper cables
Make sure to connect the jumper cable clamps in exactly
the order described below!

The procedure described below for connecting jumper
cables is intended to provide a jump start for your vehicle.
Vehicle with discharged battery:
-Turn off lights and accessories, move lever of automatic
transmission to
N (Neutral) or P (Park) and set parking
brake.
Connect POSITIVE (+) to POSITIVE (+) (red)
1. Connect one end to the positive terminal => fig. 297 G)
of your battery @.
2. Connect the other end to the positive terminal
@ of the
booster battery
@.
Connect NEGATIVE (-) to NEGATIVE (-) (black)
3. Connect one end to the negative terminal @ of the
booster battery
@.

4. Connect the other end to the negative ground post of the
battery manager control unit located next to the battery.
Starting the engine
-Start the engine of the vehicle with the booster battery.
Run the engine at a moderate speed.
- Start engine with discharged vehicle battery in the usual
manner .
- If the engine fails to start: do not keep the starter
cranking for longer than 10 seconds. Wait for about 30
seconds and then try again.
- With engine running, remove jumper cables from both vehicles in the exact
reverse order.
The battery is vented to the outside to prevent gases from entering
the vehicle interior . Make sure that the jumper clamps are well
connected with their metal ports in full contact with the battery
terminals.
& WARNING
To avoid serious personal injury and damage to the vehicle, heed all warnings and instructions of the jumper cable manufacturer. If
in doubt, call for road service.
• Jumper cables must be long enough so that the vehicles do not
touch.
• When connecting jumper cables, make sure that they cannot
get caught in any moving parts in the engine compartment.
• Before you check anything in the engine compartment, always
read and heed all
WARNINGS ~ page 299, "Engine compartment".

Improper hook -up of jumper cables can ruin the generator. •
Always connect POSITIVE(+) to POSITIVE(+), and NEGATIVE(-) to
NEGATIVE( -) ground post of the battery manager control unit.
• Check that all screw plugs on the battery cells are screwed in
firmly. If not, tighten plugs prior to connecting clamp on negative
battery terminal.
• Please note that the procedure for connecting a jumper cable as
described above applies specifically to the case of your vehicle
being jump started. When you are giving a jump start to another
vehicle, do not connect the negative(-) cable to the negative(-)
terminal on the discharged
battery @~ page 365, fig. 297. Instead,
securely connect the negative(-) cable to either a solid metal
component that is firmly bolted to the engine block or to the engine
block itself. If the battery that is being charged does not vent to the
outside, escaping battery gas could ignite and explode! •
Emergency towing with commercial
tow truck
General hints
Your Audi requires special handling for towing.
The following information is to be used by commercial tow truck
operators who know how to operate their equipment safely.
• Never tow your Audi, towing will cause damage to the engine
and transmission.
• Never wrap the safety chains or winch cables around the brake
lines.
• To prevent unnecessary damage, your Audi must be transported
with a flat bed truck.
• To load the vehicle on to the flat bed, use the towing loop found
in the vehicle tools and attach to the front or rear anchorage
