How to unlo ck ea ch door s eparat ely using th e
door handle
-Pull the handle to open the door.
You wil l find a power locking switch in ea ch door. You can lo ck and
u nlock
the vehicle using the switches in the driver's or passenger 's
door=> page 53, fig . 36. You can only lock the vehicle using the
switches in the rear
doors => page 53, fig. 37. If you lock the vehicle
using the
po wer l ock ing sw it c h, please note the following:
• You cannot open the doors or the rear lid from the
outside
(increased security, for exam ple when you are stopped at a red
light).
• The diodes in t he power locking switch illum inate when all the
doors and the rear lid are c losed and locked.
• All diodes turn dark as soon as one of the doors has been
unlocked .
• You can unlock and open the doors from the inside by pulling on
the door handle.
• If the driver 's doo r is opened (after you have locked the vehicle
from the inside using the power locking switch), the door wi ll
remain un locked to prevent you from locking yourself out of your
vehic le . After you c lose the door , you have to lock the drive r's door
again.
• If you have a crash and the airbag is activated, the doors auto
matical ly un lock.
& WARNING
• If you u se the power lo ck ing switch with the door s closed ,
r e member that all the vehicle doors will lock .
• Lo cki ng door s from the in side can help prevent in advertent
door op ening during an accident and can also prevent unw anted
e ntry from the out side . Lo cked doors can , how ever , d ela y as sis
t a nce to vehicle occupants and hold up rescue effort s from the
o uts ide in an acc ident or othe r em erge ncy. •

- Remove the plastic cap using your vehic le
key => fig. 38.
- Position the key at an angle of 90° to th e door trim pa nel
and push it in the d irection shown by t he arrow.
After you close the door, you wil l no longer be able to open it from
the outside.
T he door can be opened from the inside by pu lling twic e on the door
handle. If the chi ld safety lock is engaged in one of the rear doors,
the door has to be opened from the outside after pulling on the
ha ndle once from the inside. •

If the central locking system fails (power supply), you can
also open the rear lid using the mechanical key.

As a general rule, the rear lid should only be operated using
the release button in the master key, the release switch in
the drive r's door and the handle on the rear lid. Unlocking
the rear lid by inserting and turning the key inside the rear
l id locking cylinder will activate the optical and acoustic
alarm.
To unlock the rear lid
- Turn the key to the left to the opening position @
=> fig. 41. The rear lid opens.
To lock the rear lid
-Pull the rear lid down and slam it closed gently =>& .
Turning the key counter-clockwise to position @ will release the
rear lid and cause it to rise slightly. In this position the key cannot
be pulled out of the lock cylinder.

clockwise to the horizontal position @ and pulling
it out will cause the
lid to remain locked when the power locking
system is actuated. I
n this state the rear lid can only be unlocked with the unlock button
~ on the remote control. On vehicles equipped with the Advanced
Key * feature, press the handle on the rear lid to unlock the luggage
compartment ~ page 55, fig. 40.
After you turn the key
counter-clockwise back to the vertical posi
tion, the rear lid will again respond to the power locking system.

The child safety lock prevents the rear doors from being
opened from the inside.

The rear doors have a child safety lock. You can use any
vehicle key to engage and disengage the lock. The child
safety lock is visible only when the door is open.
-To switch on the child safety lock, turn the ignition key in
the direction of the arrow.
-To switch off the child safety lock, turn the ignition key in
the opposite direction to the arrow.
The child safety lock prevents the doors from being opened from the
inside when you have small children sitting in the rear. •

The power child safety lock prevents the rear doors from
being opened from the inside .

-Press the left and/or right safety button to disable the
rear power window(sl and prevent the respective rear
door from being opened from the inside. The LED in the
button will light up when the child safety lock is turned
on.
-Press the illuminated button again to turn the child
safety features
off .
When the child safety lock is activated, the interior door opening
lever is inoperative; the door can only be opened from the outside.
In addition, the window regulator for that door is also inoperative
when the child safety lock is activated .
If the child safety lock has been activated on both the left
and right
side, then the following features are switched off: the buttons for
the interior lights , the sun blind * in the rear window and the buttons

for the power sun blinds* in the side windows . In addition to this,
t he rear climate contro l* is set to the
PA SS IV E mode. This means
that the climate controls in the front adjust the heating and venti la
tion in the rear of the
ve hicle => page 125.

• I n order to activate the child safety lock on the left and the right
s ide, you have to press the two safety buttons in succession.
• Make certa in that the indica tor light in the corresponding safety
button illuminates when the child safety lock is activated .•
Advanced Key
A pplies to vehicles : with Advance d Key
Description
Opening your vehicle and starting the engine with the key
still in your pocket.
T he Advanced Key features is a keyless system which gives you the
possibility to lock and unlock your vehic le, as wel l as to start the
engine without having to use your key.
It does not matter if you have your key in your jacket pocket or in
your briefcase. As soon as you get within a certain distance to the
vehic le, t he system senses that your are approaching, it makes a
quick check to see if you are "authorized" and then it does the
following:
• unlocks the
veh ic le => page 60 .
• locks the vehicle => page 60.
• switches on the ignition and starts the engine when you press
t he [ START] button. You do not have to insert your key into the ign i
tion
lock=> page 131.

• For the Advanced Key to properly work, you must a lways have
your vehicle key with you .
• The vehic le will lock or un lock the doors only if an authorized key
comes within 5 ft (1 .5 meters) from one of the vehic le doors or the
rear lid .
• You can st ill lock or unlock your vehic le using the remote control
key buttons, however the se lector lever must in the P position .•

lock the vehicle from the outside the windows cannot be opened
from the inside.
• When you leave the vehicle, always remove the ignition key and
take it with you. This will prevent passengers (children, for example) from accidentally being locked in the vehicle should they
accidentally press the power locking switch in the doors.
• Do not leave children inside the vehicle unsupervised. In an
emergency it would be impossible to open the doors from the
outside without the key.
[ i] Tips
It is not possible to open the door immediately after it has been
locked. This is intentional to allow you to check proper locking of all
vehicle doors. •
Anti-theft alarm system
The anti-theft alarm triggers an alarm if anyone attempts
to break into the vehicle.
The anti-theft alarm system triggers an audible alarm and turns on
the emergency flasher if an unauthorized interference with the
vehicle is sensed by the system.
How is the anti-theft alarm system switched on?
The anti-theft alarm system is switched on when you lock the
vehicle. The system is activated approximately 30 seconds after the
vehicle is locked . The indicator lights on top of the driver's and front
passenger's door trim start flashing rapidly for 30 seconds and then
blink slowly.

How is the anti-theft alarm system switched off?
The anti-theft alarm system is switched off only when you unlock
your vehicle . If you do not open a door within 60 seconds after you
have unlocked with the remote control, the vehicle will lock itself
again automatically.
When will the anti-theft alarm system be triggered?
When the vehicle is locked, the alarm system monitors and protects
the following parts of the vehicle:
• engine compartment
• luggage compartment
• doors
• ignition
When the system is activated, the alarm will be triggered if one of
the doors, the engine hood or the rear lid are opened, or if the igni
tion is turned on. The anti-theft alarm system will also go off when
the battery is disconnected.
Unlocking the rear lid by inserting and turning the key inside the
rear lid locking cylinder will trigger the optical and acoustic alarm .
You can also trigger the alarm by pressing the PANIC button on your
remote control. This will alert other people in case of emergency.
Press the
PANIC button again to turn off the alarm.
How is the anti-theft alarm switched off when
triggered?
The alarm system is switched off when you unlock the vehicle or
when the ignition is switched on. The alarm will also switch itself off
when it comes to the end of its cycle .
Emergency flasher and horn
The emergency flasher will blink briefly and the horn sounds when
the doors, engine hood and rear lid are properly closed.
If the emergency flashers do not blink, or the horn does not sound,
check the doors, engine hood and rear lid to make sure they are
properly closed. If you close a door, the hood or the rear lid with the

Switches in the driver's door
The driver can operate all windows.
If the respective switch is pus hed or pulled the window will
open or c lose. The power window switches have a
two-po si
tion fun ction :

- Pu sh the switch to the first stop and hold it the re until the
window has lowered to t he desired pos ition.
- Push the sw itch briefly to the
s e cond stop : the wi ndow
will aut omatical ly open a ll the way .
Closing th e windows
- Pull the switch up to the first stop and hold it t here until
the window has risen to the desired position.

some sw itches in the rear can be turned off . When
the ~ symbol in
the safety switch illuminates, the following functions are switched
off:
• The power windows in the rear doors.
• The buttons for t he interior lights.
• The buttons for the power sun b linds* in side windows .
• The button for the power sun bl ind* in the rear w indow.
• I n vehic les with rear climate contro l* the PASSIVE mode is acti
vated . In this mode the rear air conditioning can be operated only
from contro ls in the driver's
area => page 125 .
This feature has been provided for the safety of smal l ch ildren rid ing
in the rear of the vehic le.

these features can likewise be switched off . Both

must be pressed.
• If
only the left CI) button is pressed, then only the re ar left door
power window is switched off and the door is locked.

The driver can determine in the MM/ which windows can
be opened using the convenience functio n.

The roof wil l slide open or til t up at the rear as required . When the
ignition is on, you can slide the roof open or close it to the desired
position by turning the ro tary control switch located overhead next
to the interior light . The roof is tilted open or closed by pressing or
pull ing the control switch at

You can still close or open the sunroof for up to ten minutes after
you have sw itched off the ignition with the key remaining in the igni
tion lock . If either door is opened , powered operation of the sunroof
