STOPPING
D o n o t fl i c k t h e a c c e l e r a t o r a t t h e
moment of switching off the ignition.
This could cause serious damage to
the turbocharger(s).
IGNITION SWITCH
1. "S": Steering lock
To unlock the steering, gently move
the steering wheel while turning the
key, without forcing it.
2. "M": Drive position
Depending on the version of your
vehicle, the orange and red warning
lamps should also come on for a short
time.
3. "D": Starter
Release the key as soon the engine
has started.
I f t h e fi r s t a t t e m p t f a i l s , s w i t c h o f f t h e
ignition. Wait ten seconds then operate
the starter again. Steering lock

S": After removing the key, turn the
steering wheel to lock the steering. The
key can only be removed in position S .
2. "M": Ignition switched on, the
steering is unlocked (by turning the
key to position M , move the steering
wheel gently if necessary).
3. "D": Starter position.
Never turn the key to this position
when the engine is running.
Key in ignition buzzer
If you forget to remove the key from
the ignition, a buzzer sounds when
the driver's door is opened.
Do not run the engine in an en-
closed space or where there is in-
s u f fi c i e n t v e n t i l a t i o n .
It is essential always to drive with
the engine running in order to retain
braking and steering assistance.
Never remove the ignition key
before the vehicle has come to a
complete stop.
Avoid attaching a heavy object to
the key which would weigh down
on its shaft in the switch and could
cause a malfunction. Vehicles equipped with a
turbocharger
Never stop the engine without having
allowed it to run for a few seconds at
idle, this being the time required for
the turbocharger to return to a normal
speed.

DIRECTIONAL LIGHTING
without bend lighting

"Bend lighting" function
With dipped or main beams, this
function provides additional lighting
for the inside of a bend, when the
vehicle speed is below 25 mph (ap-
p r o x 4 0 k m / h ) .
This lighting is most useful when
travelling at low and medium speed
(urban driving, winding road, inter-
s e c t i o n s , p a r k i n g m a n o e u v r e s . . . ) .
Activation
This function is activated:
- when the direction indicator is
activated,
- from a certain angle of rotation of the steering wheel. Deactivation
This function is deactivated:
- below a certain angle of rotation
of the steering wheel,
- when stationary or at very low speed,
- when reverse gear is engaged,
- when the directional headlamps are switched off.

BRAKING ASSISTANCE SYSTEMS

Activation
The anti-lock braking system comes

When braking in an emergency,

dible signal and a message

anti-lock braking system which could
result in loss of control of the vehicle
when braking.
If this warning light comes
on, together with the STOP
and ABS warning lights, ac-
c o m p a n i e d b y a n a u d i b l e
signal and a message on the instru-
m e n t p a n e l d i s p l a y , i t i n d i c a t e s a
malfunction of the electronic brake
force distribution which could result
in loss of control of the vehicle when
braking.
You MUST stop as soon as it is
safe to do so.
In both cases, contact a CITROËN
dealer.
W h e n r e p l a c i n g w h e e l s ( t y r e s a n d
rims), ensure that they conform to
the manufacturer's recommenda-
tions. Emergency braking assistance
System which, in an emergency,

TRAJECTORY CONTROL SYSTEMS
Anti-skid regulation (ASR) and
electronic stability programme
(ESP)
T h e a n t i - s k i d r e g u l a t i o n o p t i m i s e s
t r a c t i o n t o p r e v e n t s k i d d i n g o f t h e
wheels, by acting on the brakes of the
driving wheels and on the engine.
T h e e l e c t r o n i c s t a b i l i t y p r o g r a m m e
acts on the brake of one or more
w h e e l s a n d o n t h e e n g i n e t o k e e p
the vehicle on the trajectory required
by the driver. Activation
These systems are activated auto-
matically each time the vehicle is
started.
T h e y c o m e i n t o o p e r a t i o n i n t h e e v e n t
o f a g r i p o r t r a j e c t o r y p r o b l e m . T h i s i s i n d i c a t e d b y fl a s h i n g
of this warning light on the
i n s t r u m e n t p a n e l . Disarming
I n e x c e p t i o n a l c o n d i t i o n s ( s t a r t i n g a
vehicle which is bogged down, stuck
in snow, on soft ground...), it may
be advisable to disarm the ASR and
ESP systems, so that the wheels
c a n m o v e f r e e l y a n d r e g a i n g r i p .
Press the "ESP OFF" button, lo-
cated in the centre of the fascia.
If this warning light comes
o n o n t h e i n s t r u m e n t p a n e l
and the indicator light on the
button comes on, this indi-
cates that the ASR and ESP
systems are disarmed.
Snow driving assistance
(SNOW MOTION)

SNOW MOTION.
This automatic system continuously
c h e c k s f o r s i t u a t i o n s o f d i f fi c u l t s u r -
face adhesion that could make it dif-
fi c u l t t o m o v e o f f o r m a k e p r o g r e s s
o n d e e p f r e s h s n o w o r c o m p a c t e d
snow.
In these situations, the SNOW
MOTION system takes over from
the ASR s y s t e m b y o p t i m i s i n g t h e
a m o u n t o f w h e e l s l i p t o p r o v i d e t h e
best traction and trajectory control,
even without snow tyres and with or
without chains. For vehicles with Hydractive III+
s u s p e n s i o n , m a n u a l a d j u s t m e n t o f
ground clearance to the intermediate
p o s i t i o n i m p r o v e s f u r t h e r t h e a b i l i t y
t o m a k e p r o g r e s s i n d e e p s n o w ( s e e
t h e r e l e v a n t p a r a g r a p h ) .
I n e x t r e m e l y s e v e r e c o n d i t i o n s ( s n o w
o n t o p o f i c e , s a n d , d e e p m u d … ) , i t
can be useful to deactivate the
ESP/
ASR systems to allow a degree of
w h e e l s p i n a n d s o r e c o v e r g r i p .

SEAT BELTS
Front seat belts
T h e f r o n t s e a t b e l t s a r e fi t t e d w i t h
a p r e t e n s i o n i n g s y s t e m a n d f o r c e
limiter.
T h i s s y s t e m i m p r o v e s s a f e t y i n t h e
front seats in the event of a front
i m p a c t .
D e p e n d i n g o n t h e s e r i o u s n e s s o f t h e
i m p a c t , t h e p r e t e n s i o n i n g s y s t e m
instantly tightens the seat belt
a g a i n s t t h e b o d y o f t h e o c c u p a n t . Fastening
Pull the belt down in front of you
in a steady movement, making
sure that it does not become
twisted.
Press the fastening into its buckle.
C h e c k t h a t i t i s p r o p e r l y s e c u r e d
and that the automatic locking
m e c h a n i s m o p e r a t e s c o r r e c t l y
b y p u l l i n g s h a r p l y o n t h e b e l t
s t r a p .
T h e a b d o m i n a l p a r t o f t h e s t r a p
s h o u l d b e p o s i t i o n e d a s l o w

T h e c h e s t p a r t s h o u l d b e p o s i -
t i o n e d i f p o s s i b l e i n t h e c h a n n e l
of the shoulder.
Each belt has a reel that adjusts its
length automatically to the girth of
t h e s e a t o c c u p a n t .
T h e p r e t e n s i o n i n g s e a t b e l t s a r e
active when the ignition is on.
T h e f o r c e l i m i t e r r e d u c e s t h e p r e s -
sure of the seat belt against the
c h e s t o f t h e o c c u p a n t , s o i n c r e a s i n g
h i s p r o t e c t i o n .
Reactivation
These systems are reactivated au-
tomatically each time the ignition is
s w i t c h e d b a c k o n o r f r o m 3 0 m p h
(50 km/h).
Press the "ESP OFF" button again
to reactivate them manually.
Operating fault If this warning light comes
o n , a c c o m p a n i e d b y a n a u -
dible signal and a message
o n t h e m u l t i f u n c t i o n d i s p l a y ,
this indicates a malfunction of these
systems.
Have the systems checked by a
CITROËN dealer.
T h e E S P / A S R s y s t e m s o f f e r e x -
c e p t i o n a l s a f e t y i n n o r m a l d r i v i n g ,
but this should not encourage the
d r i v e r t o t a k e e x t r a r i s k s o r d r i v e a t
h i g h s p e e d .
The correct functioning of these
s y s t e m s d e p e n d s o n o b s e r v a t i o n
of the manufacturer's recommen-
dations regarding the wheels (tyres
a n d r i m s ) , t h e b r a k i n g c o m p o n e n t s ,
t h e e l e c t r o n i c c o m p o n e n t s a n d t h e
C I T R O Ë N a s s e m b l y a n d o p e r a t i o n
p r o c e d u r e s .
