Rearview mirror
To reduce glare from the headlights of following vehicles, use the contr\
ol to switch between the normal
and night-driving positions.
A. Normal position
B. Night position, reduces glare from following headlights
Autodim function (option)
The autodim function reacts to headlights from following traffic and aut\
omatically reduces glare.
NOTE: This function is automatically switched off when the gear selector is p\
laced in the Reverse
position.
Rearview mirror with compass (option)
The upper left-hand corner of the rearview mirror has an integrated disp\
lay that shows the compass
direction toward which the car is pointing. Eight different directions c\
an be displayed: N, NE, E, SE, S,
SW, W and NW. The display shows your car's orientation with respect to t\
rue north.
If the compass is activated, it will be displayed automatically when the\
ignition is in postilion II or when
the engine is running. The compass can be switched off or on by pressing\
the inset button on the rear

l The audio system's volume will be reduced.
l An intermittent signal will be audible from the speakers to indicate tha\
t you are approaching a person,
object, parked vehicle, etc. The signals begin when the distance between\
the bumper and the object is:
Rear: approximately 5 feet (1.5 meters)
Front: approximately 2.5 ft (0.8 meters)
l At a distance of approximately 1 foot (30 cm), the signal will become \
constant. If objects are close to
both the front and rear bumpers, the signal will alternate between the f\
ront and rear speakers.
Deactivating the system(s)
- Press the Park assist button on the center console (see
page 55) to temporarily deactivate the system(s).
- The indicator light in the button will go out when the system(s) hav\
e been deactivated.
- If the vehicle is equipped with front and rear park assist, both syste\
ms will be deactivated by pressing
the button.
Park assist will be automatically reactivated the next time the engine i\
s started.
NOTE: It may be necessary to deactivate one or both of the park assist systems\
in certain cases.
l Rear park assist: towing a trailer, carrying bicycles in a rear-mounted carrier, etc, co\
uld trigger the
rear park assist system's sensors.
l Front park assist: it may not be possible to combine auxiliary headlights and front park \
assist since
these lights could trigger the system's sensors.

Faults in the system
If the yellow warning symbol illuminates and a message is shown in the \
information display, the
system is not functioning properly. Consult a Volvo retailer or authoriz\
ed service technician.
Cleaning the sensors
For the system to function properly, the sensors in the front and/or rea\
r bumpers should be kept clean.
They can be cleaned with car washing detergent and a sponge.
WARNING!
These systems are designed to be a supplementary aid when parking the ve\
hicle. They are not,
however, intended to replace the driver's attention and judgement.

l An automatic wash is a simple and quick way to clean your vehicle, but i\
t is worth remembering that
it may not be as thorough as when you yourself go over the vehicle with \
sponge and water. Keeping the
underbody clean is most important, especially in the winter. Some automa\
tic washers do not have
facilities for washing the underbody.
l Before driving into an automatic car wash, make sure that side view mirr\
ors, auxiliary lamps, etc, are
secure, and that any antenna(s) are retracted or removed. Otherwise th\
ere is risk of the machine
dislodging them.
Exterior lighting
Condensation may form temporarily on the inside of the lenses of exterio\
r lights such as headlights, fog
lights, or tail lights. This is normal and the lights are designed to wi\
thstand moisture. Normally,
condensation will dissipate after the lights have been on for a short ti\
me.
Polishing and waxing
l Normally, polishing is not required during the first year after delivery\
, however, waxing may be
beneficial.
l Before applying polish or wax the vehicle must be washed and dried. Tar \
spots can be removed with
kerosene or tar remover. Difficult spots may require a fine rubbing comp\
ound.
l After polishing use liquid or paste wax.
l Several commercially available products contain both polish and wax.
l Waxing alone does not substitute for polishing a dull surface.
l A wide range of polymer-based waxes can be purchased today. These waxes \
are easy to use and
produce a long-lasting, high-gloss finish that protects the bodywork aga\
inst oxidation, road dirt and
fading.
l Do not polish or wax your vehicle in direct sunlight (the surface of th\
e vehicle should not be warmer
than 113° F (45° C).
CAUTION!
Volvo does not recommend the use of long-life or durable paint protectio\
n coatings, some of which
may claim to prevent pitting, fading, oxidation, etc. These coatings hav\
e not been tested by Volvo for
compatibility with your vehicle's clear coat. Some of them may cause the\
clear coat to soften, crack,
or cloud. Damage caused by application of paint protection coatings may \
not be covered under your
vehicle's paint warranty.
Side windows with the water repellent glass coating-option
l Do not apply wax, degreasing agents, etc to this glass. This could damag\
e the coating.
l Clean the glass surface with care to avoid scratching.
l Use only suitable plastic scrapers to remove ice or snow from the window\
s.
NOTE: The water repellent coating is subject to natural wear.

Maintaining your car
Owner maintenance
Periodic maintenance requirements and intervals are described in your ve\
hicle's Warranty and Service
Records Information booklet.
The following points can be carried out between the normally scheduled m\
aintenance services.
Each time the vehicle is refueled:
l Check the engine oil level
l Clean the windshield, windshield wipers, headlights, and tail lights
Monthly:
l Check cold tire pressure in all tires. Inspect the tires for wear.
l Check that engine coolant and other fluid levels are between the indicat\
ed "min" and "max" markings.
l Clean interior glass surfaces with a glass cleaner and soft paper towels\
.
l Wipe driver information displays with a soft cloth.
l Visually inspect battery terminals for corrosion. Corrosion may indicate\
a loose terminal connector, or
a battery near the end of its useful service life. Consult your Volvo re\
tailer for additional information.
As needed:
l Wash the vehicle, including the undercarriage, to reduce wear that can b\
e caused by a buildup of dirt,
and corrosion that can be caused by salt residues.
l Clean leaves and twigs from air intake vents at the base of the windshie\
ld, and from other places
where they may collect.
NOTE: Complete service information for qualified technicians is available onl\
ine for purchase or

Emission inspection readiness
What is an Onboard Diagnostic System (OBD II)?
OBD II is part of your vehicle's computerized engine management system. \
It stores diagnostic
information about your vehicle's emission controls. It can light the Che\
ck Engine light (MIL) if it detects
an emission control "fault." A "fault" is a component or system that is \
not performing within an expected
range. A fault may be permanent or temporary. OBD II will store a messag\
e about any fault.

Replacing bulbs
When replacing bulbs, keep the following points in mind:
l Never touch the glass of bulbs with your fingers. Grease and oils from y\
our fingers vaporize in the
heat and will leave a deposit on the reflector, which will damage it.
l The optional Active Bi-Xenon headlight bulbs contain trace amounts of me\
rcury. These bulbs should
always be disposed of by an authorized Volvo retailer.
l The following bulbs should only be replaced by an authorized Volvo servi\
ce technician:
- Active Bi-Xenon headlights,
- Courtesy (dome) lighting,
- Reading lights,
- Glove compartment lights
- Turn signals and courtesy lights in the side door mirrors
- High-mounted brake lights
- Diodes in the rear tail lights
Replacing bulbs at the front of the vehicle
All front bulbs (except the optional front fog lights) are replaced fr\
om the engine compartment.
WARNING!
Active Bi-Xenon headlights (option) - due to the high voltage used by \
these headlights, these bulbs
should only be replaced by an authorized Volvo service technician.
