Home safe lighting
When you leave your car at night, you can make use of the home safe ligh\
ting function to illuminate the area in front
of the car.
1. Remove the key from the ignition switch.
2. Pull the direction indicator lever as far as possible towards the ste\
ering wheel (to position 4) and release it.
3. Exit the car and lock the doors.
The headlights and parking lights will illuminate and remain on for 30
1, 60 or 90 seconds. The time interval can be
changed according to your preferences by using the Personal Settings fun\
ction, see
page 72 for more information.

Trip computer
The trip computer stores information gathered from several systems in yo\
ur car and has four menus (five on Canadian
models) that can be shown in the information display.

NOTE
Warning messages from the car's monitoring systems will override the tri\
p computer
function.
If a warning message is shown in the information display while you are u\
sing the trip computer:
1. You must acknowledge the message by pressing the READ button (A).
2. Press button A again to return to the trip computer function.
Controls
The trip computer functions can be accessed by twisting INFO (B) one s\
tep at a time in either direction. Twisting a
final time returns you to the original function.
The trip computer can be reset (average fuel consumption and average sp\
eed will be erased from system memory) by
pressing RESET (C) for at least five seconds.
MILES TO EMPTY TANK
This function shows the approximate distance that can be driven on the f\
uel remaining in the tank. This calculation is
based on average fuel consumption during the last 20 miles (30 km) of \
driving and the amount of fuel remaining in
the tank when the reading was taken. When the driving distance on curren\
t fuel reserve is less than 12 miles (20 km),
"----" will be displayed in the information display.
AVERAGE
This value indicates fuel consumption since the last time the trip compu\
ter was reset (by pressing RESET, button C).
When the engine is switched off, information on fuel consumption is stor\
ed and remains in system memory until the
RESET (button C) is pressed again.
INSTANTANEOUS
This value indicates the current fuel consumption, based on readings tak\
en once per second. When the car is not
moving, "----" will be displayed.
AVERAGE SPEED
This value indicates average speed since the last time the trip computer\
was reset (by pressing RESET, button C).
When the engine is switched off, information on average speed is stored \
and remains in system memory until the
RESET (button C) is pressed again.

ACTUAL SPEED (Canadian models only)
This function provides the driver with an instantaneous conversion of th\
e car's current speed from km/h to m.p.h.
NOTE
Trip computer readings may vary slightly depending on the circumference \
of the tires on the car, tire inflation, or
driving style.

122 06 Starting and driving
General information
Economical driving conserves natural resources
Better driving economy may be obtained by thinking ahead, avoiding rapid\
starts and stops and adjusting
the speed of your vehicle to immediate traffic conditions.
Observe the following rules:
l Bring the engine to normal operating temperature as soon as possible by \
driving with a light foot on the
accelerator pedal for the first few minutes of operation. A cold engine \
uses more fuel and is subject to
increased wear.
l Whenever possible, avoid using the vehicle for driving short distances. \
This does not allow the engine
to reach normal operating temperature.
l Drive carefully and avoid rapid acceleration and hard braking.
l Use the transmission's Drive (D) position as often as possible and avo\
id using kickdown.
l Do not exceed posted speed limits.
l Avoid carrying unnecessary items (extra load) in the vehicle.
l Maintain correct tire pressure. Check tire pressure regularly (when tir\
es are cold).
l Remove snow tires when threat of snow or ice has ended.
l At highway driving speeds, fuel consumption will be lower with the air c\
onditioning on and the
windows closed than with the air conditioning off and the windows open. \
l Using the onboard trip computer's fuel consumption modes can help you le\
arn how to drive more
economically.
Other factors that decrease gas mileage are:
l Dirty air cleaner
l Dirty engine oil and clogged oil filter
l Dragging brakes
l Incorrect front end alignment
Some of the above mentioned items and others are checked at the standard\
maintenance intervals.
Avoid overheating the engine
Do not drive at engine speeds above 4,500 rpm if you tow a trailer in hi\
lly areas. This could cause the
engine oil to overheat.

corrosion that can be caused by salt residues.
l Clean leaves and twigs from air intake vents at the base of the windshie\
ld, and from other places where
they may collect.

Emission inspection readiness
What is an Onboard Diagnostic System (OBD II)?
OBD II is part of your vehicle's computerized engine management system. \
It stores diagnostic
information about your vehicle's emission controls. It can light the Che\
ck Engine light (MIL) if it detects
an emission control "fault." A "fault" is a component or system that is \
not performing within an expected
range. A fault may be permanent or temporary. OBD II will store a messag\
e about any fault.
How Do States Use OBD II for Emission Inspections?
Many states connect a computer directly to a vehicle's OBD II system. Th\
e inspector can then read
"faults." In some states, this type of inspection has replaced the tailp\
ipe emission test.
How Can My Vehicle Fail OBD II Emission Inspection?
Your vehicle can fail OBD II emission inspection for any of the followin\
g reasons.
l If your Check Engine (MIL) light is lit, your vehicle may fail inspect\
ion.
l If your vehicle's Check Engine light was lit, but went out without any a\
ction on your part, OBD II will
still have a recorded fault. Your vehicle may pass or fail, depending on\
the inspection practices in your
area.
l If you had recent service that required disconnecting the battery, OBD I\
I diagnostic information may be
incomplete and "not ready" for inspection. A vehicle that is not ready m\
ay fail inspection.
How Can I Prepare for My Next OBD II Emission Inspection?
l If your Check Engine (MIL) light is lit - or was lit but went out with\
out service, have your vehicle
diagnosed and, if necessary, serviced by a qualified Volvo technician.
l If you recently had service for a lit Check Engine light, or if you had \
service that required
disconnecting the battery, a period of driving is necessary to bring the\
OBD II system to "ready" for
inspection. A half-hour trip of mixed stop-and-go/highway driving is typ\
ically needed to allow OBD II to
reach readiness. Your Volvo retailer can provide you with more informati\
on on planning a trip.
