Manual Operation
Turn the right knob clockwise or counterclockwise
to direct the airow inside of the vehicle.
To change the current mode, select one of the
following:
H(Vent):This mode directs air to the instrument
panel outlets.
)(Bi-Level):This mode directs half of the air to
the instrument panel outlets and the other half
to the oor outlets.
6(Floor):This mode directs most of the air to
the oor outlets, with some of the air directed
to the windshield and side window outlets. In this
mode, the system will automatically select
Outside Air.
The right knob can also be used to select defog or
defrost mode. For more information, see
“Defogging and Defrosting” later in this section.
By positioning the right knob between two modes,
a combination of those two modes is selected.
The air conditioning compressor will operate
unless the outside temperature is 40°F (4°C)
or below.
9(Fan):Turn the left knob clockwise or
counterclockwise to increase or decrease the fan
speed. If the airow seems low when the fan
is at the highest setting, the passenger
compartment air lter may need to be replaced.

Rear Window Defogger
The rear window defogger uses a warming grid to
remove fog from the rear window.
<:The rear window defogger will turn off
automatically after it has been activated for
10 minutes. It can be turned off manually, by
pressing the button again or by turning the ignition
to the OFF position. If additional window clearing
is required, the rear window defogger can be
turned on again for additional window clearing. The
length of defogger operation will increase if the
vehicle is being driven.
If your vehicle has heated outside rearview
mirrors, the mirrors will heat to help clear fog or
frost from the surface of the mirror when the
rear window defog button is pressed. SeeOutside

Do not drive the vehicle until all the windows
are clear.
Notice:Do not use anything sharp on the
inside of the rear window. If you do, you could
cut or damage the warming grid, and the repairs
would not be covered by your warranty. Do not
attach a temporary vehicle license, tape, a decal
or anything similar to the defogger grid.
Outlet Adjustment
Use the knob located below or to the side of the
outlet, to change the direction of the air ow.
Operation Tips
Clear away any ice, snow or leaves from the
air inlets at the base of the windshield that
may block the ow of air into your vehicle.
Use of non-GM approved hood deectors may
adversely affect the performance of the system.
Keep the path under the front seats clear of
objects to help circulate the air inside your
vehicle more effectively.
If the airow seems low when the fan is at the
highest setting, the passenger compartment air
lter, if equipped, may need to replaced. For

Passenger Compartment Air Filter
This vehicle has a passenger compartment
particulate air lter. It is located in the engine
compartment, on the passenger’s side, under
the air inlet grille.
The lter traps most of the pollen from air entering
the climate control system. Like the engine’s air
cleaner/lter, it may need to be changed
periodically to ensure system performance. For
information on how often to change the passenger
compartment air lter, seeScheduled Maintenance
on page 406.
To change the passenger compartment air lter,
use the following steps:
1. Turn off the ignition when the windshield
wipers are in the up position.
2. Raise the vehicle hood.
3. Disconnect the windshield washer pump hose
from the fender rail and air inlet grille.
4. Peel back the hood weatherstrip from the
passenger’s side of the vehicle halfway
to center.5. Remove the air inlet grille retainers.
6. Remove the air inlet grille.
7. Remove the water deector plate.
8. Remove the old passenger compartment
air lter.
9. Reverse the steps to install the new air lter.

be sure to re-install the air lter.

If the ENGINE OIL LOW ADD OIL message
appears in the Driver Information Center (DIC),
it means you need to check the engine oil
level right away. For more information, see
DIC Warnings and Messages on page 195.
You should check the engine oil level regularly;
this is an added reminder.
Checking Engine Oil
It is a good idea to check the engine oil every time
you get fuel. In order to get an accurate reading,
the oil must be warm and the vehicle must be
on level ground.
The engine oil dipstick handle is a yellow loop.

for the location of the engine oil dipstick.
1. Turn off the engine and give the oil several
minutes to drain back into the oil pan. If you
do not do this, the oil dipstick might not
show the actual level.
2. Pull out the dipstick and clean it with a paper
towel or cloth, then push it back in all the
way. Remove it again, keeping the tip down,
and check the level.

Engine Air Cleaner/Filter
The engine air cleaner/lter is located in the
engine compartment on the driver’s side of the
vehicle. SeeEngine Compartment Overview
on page 308for more information on location.
When to Inspect the Engine
Air Cleaner/Filter
Inspect the air cleaner/lter at the MaintenanceII
intervals and replace it at the rst oil change
after each 50,000 mile (83 000 km) interval.

more information. If you are driving in dusty/dirty
conditions, inspect the lter at each engine
oil change.
How to Inspect the Engine
Air Cleaner/Filter
To inspect the air cleaner/lter, remove the lter
from the vehicle and lightly shake the lter to
release loose dust and dirt. If the lter remains
caked with dirt, a new lter is required.To inspect or replace the engine air cleaner/lter
do the following:
1. Lift the lter cover tabs on top of the engine
air cleaner/lter housing.
2. Push the lter cover housing toward the engine.
3. Pull out the lter.
4. Inspect or replace the engine air cleaner/lter.
5. To reinstall the cover, position the tabs
through the hinges on the housing.
6. Push the cover tabs on top of the housing to
lock the cover in place.
