{CAUTION:
If something is between an occupant and
an airbag, the airbag might not in ate
properly or it might force the object into
that person causing severe injury or even
death. The path of an in ating airbag
must be kept clear. Do not put anything
between an occupant and an airbag,
and do not attach or put anything on the
steering wheel hub or on or near any
other airbag covering.
Do not use seat accessories that block
the in ation path of a seat-mounted
side impact airbag.
When Should an Airbag In ate?
The driver’s and passenger’s frontal airbags are
designed to in ate in moderate to severe frontal or
near-frontal crashes. But they are designed to
in ate only if the impact exceeds a predetermined
deployment threshold. Deployment thresholds
take into account a variety of desired deployment
and non-deployment events and are used to
predict how severe a crash is likely to be in time
for the airbags to in ate and help restrain the
occupants. Whether your frontal airbags will or
should deploy is not based on how fast your
vehicle is traveling. It depends largely on what you
hit, the direction of the impact, and how quickly
your vehicle slows down.
In addition, your vehicle has “dual-stage” frontal
airbags, which adjust the restraint according
to crash severity. Your vehicle has electronic
frontal sensors which help the sensing system
distinguish between a moderate frontal impact
and a more severe frontal impact. For moderate
frontal impacts, these airbags in ate at a level
less than full deployment. For more severe frontal
impacts, full deployment occurs.

When the system check is complete, either the
word ON or the word OFF, or the symbol for on or
the symbol for off, will be visible. SeePassenger
Airbag Status Indicator on page 192.
The passenger sensing system will turn off the
passenger’s frontal airbag and side impact airbag
(if equipped) under certain conditions. The
driver’s airbags are not part of the passenger
sensing system.
The passenger sensing system works with
sensors that are part of the passenger’s seat and
safety belt. The sensors are designed to detect
the presence of a properly seated occupant
and determine if the passenger’s frontal airbag
and side impact airbag (if equipped) should
be enabled (may in ate) or not.
Accident statistics show that children are safer if
they are restrained in the rear rather than the front
seat. We recommend that rear-facing child
restraints not be transported in your vehicle, even
if the airbag is off.Your vehicle has a label on the sun visor that
says, “Never put a rear-facing child seat in
the front.” This is because the risk to the
rear-facing child is so great if the airbag deploys.
Never put a child in a rear-facing child restraint
in the passenger’s seat unless the passenger
airbag status indicator shows off and the airbags
are off.
{CAUTION:
A child in a rear-facing child restraint
can be seriously injured or killed if the
passenger’s airbag in ates. This is
because the back of the rear-facing child
restraint would be very close to the
in ating airbag. Be sure the airbag is off
before using a rear-facing child restraint
in the passenger’s position.

{CAUTION:
For up to 10 seconds, after the ignition is
turned off and the battery is disconnected,
an airbag can still in ate during improper
service. You can be injured if you are
close to an airbag when it in ates. Avoid
yellow connectors. They are probably part
of the airbag system. Be sure to follow
proper service procedures, and make sure
the person performing work for you is
quali ed to do so.
The airbag system does not need regular
maintenance.
Adding Equipment to Your
Airbag-Equipped Vehicle
Q:Is there anything I might add to the
exterior of the vehicle that could keep the
airbags from working properly?
A:Yes. If you add things that change your
vehicle’s frame, bumper system, height,
front end or side sheet metal, they may keep
the airbag system from working properly.
Also, the airbag system may not work properly
if you relocate any of the airbag sensors. If
you have any questions about this, you should
contact Customer Assistance before you
modify your vehicle. The phone numbers and
addresses for Customer Assistance are in
Step Two of the Customer Satisfaction
Procedure in this manual. SeeCustomer

Q:Because I have a disability, I have to get
my vehicle modi ed. How can I nd out
whether this will affect my airbag system?
A:Changing or moving any parts of the
front seats, safety belts, the airbag sensing
and diagnostic module, steering wheel,
instrument panel, the inside review mirror,
or airbag wiring can affect the operation of
the airbag system. If you have questions, call
Customer Assistance. The phone numbers
and addresses for Customer Assistance
are in Step Two of the Customer Satisfaction
Procedure in this manual. SeeCustomer
Satisfaction Procedure on page 452.
Your dealer/retailer and the service manual have
information about the location of the airbag
sensors, sensing and diagnostic module and
airbag wiring.
Restraint System Check
Checking the Restraint Systems
Now and then, make sure the safety belt reminder
light and all your belts, buckles, latch plates,
retractors and anchorages are working properly.
Look for any other loose or damaged safety
belt system parts. If you see anything that might
keep a safety belt system from doing its job, have
it repaired. SeeCare of Safety Belts on page 411.
Torn or frayed safety belts may not protect you in a
crash. They can rip apart under impact forces. If a
belt is torn or frayed, get a new one right away.

When you have the transmitter with you, you may
also unlock and open the door by squeezing the
door handle sensor (A). You do not have to press
the unlock button on the transmitter. You will be
able to open the door when you press the door
handle sensor and the vehicle recognizes your
keyless access transmitter. When the passenger
door is opened rst, the driver’s door will also
unlock.
From the inside, use the power door lock switch
located at the top of the door panel near both
windows. SeePower Door Locks on page 80.To open a door from the inside, press the button (B)
in front of the door handle and push the door open.
You will hear a tone when the button is pressed.
If power to the vehicle or the keyless access
transmitter is lost, there are two ways to open
the door.
From inside the vehicle, use the door release
handle located on the oor next to each seat.
Pull the handle up to unlock and unlatch the door.

Disarming the System
Always use your keyless access transmitter to
unlock a door either by pressing the unlock button
on the transmitter or by squeezing the door handle
sensor while you have the transmitter with you.
Unlocking a door any other way will set off the
alarm. If your alarm sounds, press the unlock
button on the keyless access transmitter to
disarm it.
Do not leave the key or device that disarms or
deactivates the theft deterrent system in the
vehicle.
Starting and Operating Your
Vehicle
New Vehicle Break-In
Notice:Your vehicle does not need an
elaborate break-in. But it will perform better in
the long run if you follow these guidelines:
Keep your speed at 55 mph (88 km/h)
or less for the rst 500 miles (805 km).
Do not drive at any one constant speed, fast
or slow, for the rst 500 miles (805 km).
Do not make full-throttle starts. Avoid
downshifting to brake, or slow, the vehicle.
Avoid making hard stops for the rst
200 miles (322 km) or so. During this time
the new brake linings are not yet broken in.
Hard stops with new linings can mean
premature wear and earlier replacement.
Follow this breaking-in guideline every
time you get new brake linings.
Following break-in, engine speed and load can
be gradually increased.

Fog Lamps
Use fog lamps for better vision in foggy or misty
conditions.
The fog lamps control is located on the
multifunction lever next to the exterior lamp
control.
-(Fog Lamps):Turning the band to this
position will turn the fog lamps on.
When you turn the fog lamps on, the fog lamp
light will appear on the instrument panel cluster
to indicate that the fog lamps and the parking
lamps are on.
If you turn the high-beam headlamps on, the
fog lamps will turn off. They will turn on again
when you switch to low-beam headlamps.
The ignition must be on for the fog lamps to
operate.
Some localities have laws that require the
headlamps to be on along with the fog lamps.
Twilight Sentinel®
Twilight Sentinel®can turn your lamps on and off
for you. A light sensor on top of the instrument
panel makes the Twilight Sentinel
®work, so
be sure it is not covered.
With Twilight Sentinel
®, you will see the following
happen:
When it is dark enough outside, the front
turn signal lamps (DRL) will go off, and
the headlamps and parking lamps will come
on. The other lamps that come on with
headlamps will also come on.
When it is bright enough outside, the
headlamps will go off, and the front turn signal
lamps (DRL) will come on, as long as the
exterior lamp switch is in the AUTO position.
If you start your vehicle in a dark garage, the
automatic headlamp system will come on
immediately. Once you leave the garage, it will
take about one minute for the automatic headlamp
system to change to DRL if it is light outside. During
that delay, your instrument panel cluster may not
be as bright as usual. Make sure your instrument
panel brightness control is in full bright position.

Automatic Operation
AUTO (Automatic):Press the AUTO button to
place the entire system in the automatic mode.
When automatic operation is active, the system will
automatically control the inside temperature, the
air delivery mode, and the fan speed.
After a ten second display of the current settings,
the word AUTO, the driver’s temperature setting
and the outside temperature will be shown. The
system will operate to achieve your comfort set
temperature as quickly as possible. The AUTO
control system works best with the windows up
and the removable roof installed or the convertible
top up.
1. Press the AUTO button.
2. Adjust the temperature to a comfortable
setting between 60°F (16°C) and 90°F (32°C).
Choosing the coldest or warmest temperature
setting will not cause the system to heat or
cool any faster. A setting of 73°F (23°C)
is suggested.In cold weather, the system will start at
reduced fan speeds to avoid blowing cold air
into your vehicle until warmer air is available.
The system will start out blowing air at
the oor but may change modes automatically
as the vehicle warms up to maintain the
chosen temperature setting. The length of
time needed for warm up will depend on the
outside temperature and the length of time
that has elapsed since your vehicle was
last driven.
3. Wait for the system to regulate. This may
take from 10 to 30 minutes. Then adjust
the temperature, if necessary.
Do not cover the solar sensor located in the
center of the instrument panel, near the
windshield. For more information on the solar
sensor, see “Sensor” later in this section.
