Adjusting the seat belt
Using seat belts
Volvo, the inventor of the three-point seat belt, urges you and all occu\
pants of your vehicle to wear seat
belts and ensure that children are properly restrained, using an infant,\
car, or booster seat determined by
age, weight and height.
Volvo also believes no child should sit in the front seat of a vehicle. \
Most states and provinces make it mandatory for occupants of a vehicle t\
o use seat belts.
Seat belt tensioners
The seat belts are equipped with tensioners that reduce slack in the bel\
ts. These tensioners are triggered
in situations where the airbags deploy. The front seat belts also includ\
e a tension reducing device which,
in the event of a collision, limits the peak forces exerted by the seat \
belt on the occupant.
Buckling a seat belt
Pull the belt out far enough to insert the latch plate into the receptac\
le until a distinct click is heard. The
seat belt retractor is normally "unlocked" and you can move freely, prov\
ided that the shoulder belt is not
pulled out too far.
The retractor will lock up as follows:
l if the belt is pulled out rapidly
l during braking and acceleration

Some restraint systems for children are designed to be secured in the ve\
hicle by lap belts or the lap
portion of a lap-shoulder belt. Such child restraint systems can help pr\
otect children in cars in the event
of an accident only if they are used properly. However, children could b\
e endangered in a crash if the
child restraints are not properly secured in the vehicle. Failure to fol\
low the installation instructions for
your child restraint can result in your child striking the vehicle's int\
erior in a sudden stop.
Holding a child in your arms is NOT a suitable substitute for a child re\
straint system. In an accident, a
child held in a person's arms can be crushed between the vehicle's inter\
ior and an unrestrained person.
The child could also be injured by striking the interior, or by being ej\
ected from the vehicle during a
sudden maneuver or impact. The same can also happen if the infant or chi\
ld rides unrestrained on the
seat. Other occupants should also be properly restrained to help reduce \
the chance of injuring or
increasing the injury of a child.
All states and provinces have legislation governing how and where childr\
en should be carried in a car.
Find out the regulations existing in your state or province. Recent acci\
dent statistics have shown that
children are safer in rear seating positions than front seating position\
s when properly restrained. A child
restraint system can help protect a child in a vehicle. Here's what to l\
ook for when selecting a child
restraint system:
l It should have a label certifying that it meets applicable Federal Motor\
Vehicle Safety Standards
(FMVSS 213) - or in Canada, CMVSS 213.
l Make sure the child restraint system is approved for the child's height,\
weight and development - the
label required by the standard or regulation, or instructions for infant\
restraints, typically provide this
information.
l In using any child restraint system, we urge you to carefully look over \
the instructions that are
provided with the restraint. Be sure you understand them and can use the\
device properly and safely in
this vehicle. A misused child restraint system can result in increased i\
njuries for both the infant or child
and other occupants in the vehicle.
When a child has outgrown the child safety seat, you should use the rear\
seat with the standard seat belt
fastened. The best way to help protect the child here is to place the ch\
ild on a cushion so that the seat
belt is properly located on the hips (see the illustration on
page 18). Legislation in your state or province
may mandate the use of a child seat or cushion in combination with the s\
eat belt, depending on the
child's age and/or size. Please check local regulations.
A specially designed and tested booster cushion (not available in Canad\
a) can be obtained from your
Volvo retailer for children weighing 33 - 80 lb. (15 - 36 kg) and 38-5\
4 inches (97 - 137 cm) in height.

l On hot days, the temperature in the vehicle interior can rise very quick\
ly. Exposure to these high
temperatures for even a short period of time can cause heat-related inju\
ry or death. Small children are
particularly at risk.

Integrated child booster cushion (option)
Volvo's own integrated booster cushion has been specially designed to he\
lp safeguard a child seated in
the rear seat. When using an integrated booster cushion, the child must \
be secured with the vehicle's
three-point seat belt.
Use this booster cushion only with children who weigh between 33 and 80 \
lbs (15 and 36 kg) and whose
height is between 38 and 54 in (97 and 137 cm).
The child should be properly seated on the booster cushion. The hip sect\
ion of the three-point seat belt
must fit snugly across the child's hips, not across the stomach. The sho\
ulder section of the three-point
seat belt should be positioned across the chest and shoulder (see illus\
tration). The shoulder belt must
never be placed behind the child's back or under the arm.

l MAKE SURE THE BOOSTER CUSHION IS SECURELY LOCKED BEFORE THE CHILD IS
SEATED.
l Use this booster cushion only with children who weigh between 33 and 80 \
lbs (15 and 36 kg) and
whose height is between 38 and 54 in (97 and 137 cm).
l In the event of a collision while the integrated booster cushion was occ\
upied, the entire booster
cushion and seat belt must be replaced. The booster cushion should also \
be replaced if it is badly
worn or damaged in any way. This work should be performed by an authoriz\
ed Volvo retailer only.
Canada only: This cushion may be referred to as a built-in booster cushi\
on.
Raising
l Pull the handle at the front of the cushion (1) forward.
l Move the seat belt latch aside before raising the cushion.
l With both hands push the cushion rearward (2).
l Push the cushion until it locks in place.
Lowering
l Pull the handle at the front of the cushion (1) forward.
l Pull the seat forward and press it down until it locks in place.
The booster cushion must be pressed down before the backrest can be fold\
ed down.

2. If the vehicle is equipped with the optional grocery bag holder, deta\
ch the holder's bands.
3. Remove the corner panel (1) from the floor of the cargo area.
4. Open the cover (2) in the side panel by pulling the tab (3) upwar\
d/outward.
5. Pull down the insulating material (4) to access the fuel filler doo\
r motor (5).
6. Move the catch (6) rearward to unlock the fuel filler door lock, or\
move it forward to lock the filler
door.

Steering wheel adjustment
Both the height and the reach of the steering wheel can be adjusted to a\
comfortable position for the
driver. Pull down the lever on the left of the steering column. Adjust t\
he steering wheel to a suitable
position and press the lever back into place to lock the steering wheel \
in the new position. Check that the

Manually adjusted front seats
1. Front-rear adjustment: lift the bar and move the seat to the position\
of your choice.
2. Raise/lower the front edge of the seat cushion (option): use the co\
ntrol to pump the front edge of the
cushion up or down.
3. Raise/lower seat height: pump the seat up or down.
4. Lumbar support: turn the control for firmer or softer lumbar support.\

5. Backrest tilt: turn the control to adjust the angle of the backrest. \
6. Control panel for optional power seat (see
page 60 for more information).
WARNING!
- Do not adjust the seat while driving. The seat should be adjusted so t\
hat the brake pedal can be
depressed fully. In addition, position the seat as far rearward as comfo\
rt and control allow.
- Check that the seat is securely locked into position after adjusting. \

l Pull the handle (see illustration above) and lift out the console.
l To return the console to its original position, slide it back into posit\
ion until it clicks into place.
Sliding center seat - second row (seven-seat models only)
The center seat in the second row can be moved farther forward than the \
outboard seats. This makes it
possible for a child seated in this position to sit closer to the people\
in the front seats.

Head restraint - second row, center position
The head restraint in the center position can be adjusted to 4 different\
heights.
To raise - pull the restraint up until it clicks into one of the four heights po\
sitions.
To lower - press the button at the base of the support (see illustration above)\
and press the head restraint
down.
