Starting the engine
General
You can only start the engine only using an original ignition
key.
•Place the gearshift lever into neutral an d put on the handbrake firmly before starting the engine.
•The clutch pedal should be fully depr essed when starting the engine which means that the starter only has to crank the engine.
•Let go of the key as soon as the engine starts otherwise there may be damage to the starter.
The engine running noises ma y louder at first be louder for a short time after starting the cold engine until oil pressure can be built up in the hydraulic valve clearance compensation. This is quite normal and is not an operating problem.
If the engine does not start ...
You can use the battery of anothe r vehicle as a jump-start aid ⇒page 229.
It is only possible to tow-start vehicl es fitted with a manual gearbox. The tow- starting distance must not be more than 50 metres ⇒page 233.
WARNING
•Never run the engine in non ventilated or enclosed areas. The exhaust gases of the engine contain besides the odorless and colourless carbon monoxide a poisonous gas - hazard! Carbon monoxide can cause unconsciousness and death.
•Never leave your vehicle unattended with the engine running.
Caution
•The starter may only be operated (ignition key position ), if the engine is not running. If the starter is immediately operated after switching off the engine, the starter or the engine can be damaged.
•Avoid high engine revolutions, full thrott le and high engine loads as long as the engine has not yet reached its norm al operating temperature - risk of damaging the engine!
•Vehicles which are fitted with an exha ust gas catalytic converter should not be tow-started over a distance of more than 50 metres.
For the sake of the environment
Never warm up the engine when the vehi cle is standing. Drive off right away. When driving the engine reaches its operating temperature more rapidly and the pollutant emissions are lower.
Petrol engines
These engines are fitted with a starter system which selects the correct fuel/air mixture for every external air temperature.
•Do not operate accelerator before and when starting engine.
•Interrupt the attempt at starting after 10 seconds if the engine does not start right awayand wait for about 30 seconds before repeating the attempt.
•It is possible that the fuse on the electrical fuel pump is defect if the engine still does not start. Check the fuse and replace it if necessary ⇒page 235.
•If the engine does not start, contact the nearest specialist garage to obtain professional assistance.
It may be necessary, if the engine is very hot, to slightly depress the accelerator after the engine has started.

WARNING
•Using old brake fluid can result in severe stress on the brakes because of the formation of vapour bubbles in the brake system. This greatly impairs the braking efficiency and thus also the safety of your vehicle.
•Brake fluid is toxic! It must therefore be kept safely in closed original containers and well away from children and unauthorized persons.
Caution
Brake fluid damages the paintwork of the vehicle.
For the sake of the environment
In view of the problems involved with prop er disposal of brake fluid, the special tools and the professional knowledge required, we recommend you have the brake fluid replaced by a Škoda Service Partner.
Battery
Working on the battery
The battery is located in the engine compartment below a plastic box.
– Unlock the interlock on the positi ve terminal side of the battery
⇒ fig. 148.
– Open the cover in direction of arrow.
– The installation of the battery co ver on the positive terminal side
takes place in the reverse order.
Removal and installation of the battery is not recommended since it can, under certain circumstances, lead to major da mage to the battery and fuse boxes. Contact a specialist garage.

Fuses and light bulbs
Electric fuses
Replacing fuses in the dash panel
Defect fuses must be replaced.
Individual electrical circuits are protected by fuses. The fuses are
located on the left side of the dash panel behind the safety cover.
– Switch the ignition off and also the electrical component affected.
– Carefully swivel the cover in the direction of arrow and pull it out
⇒ fig. 166.
– Find out which fuse belongs to the component which is not oper-
ating ⇒page 236, “Fuse assignment in the dash panel”.
– Take the plastic clip out of its fixture in the fuse cover, insert it onto
the respective fuse and pull out this fuse.
– Defect fuses can be detected by their melted metal strips. Replace
the defect fuse by a new fuse of the same ampere number.
– Insert the fuse cover into the dash panel in such a way that the
guide lugs are guided into the open ings of the dash panel and then
lock them by pressing.
We recommend that you carry the box of replacement fuses with you which was delivered in your vehicle. You can obtain replacement fuses 6) from a Škoda Service Partner.

Caution
•Never attempt to “repair” fuses and also do not replace them with a fuse of a higher amperage - risk of fire! This may also cause damage at another part of the electrical system.
•Have the electrical system checked as quickly as possible by a specialist garage if a newly inserted fuse blows again after a short time.
Note
We recommend that you have these fuse s replaced by a specialist garage.

Fuse assignment at battery
Certain electrical components are only standard on certain vehicle model versions or only suppliable as op tional equipment for certain models.
Bulbs
Replacing bulbs
The relevant lamp must always be switched off before a light bulb is replaced.
Do not take hold of the glass bulb with naked fingers (even the smallest amount of dirt reduces the working life of the li ght bulb). Use a clean cloth, serviette or something similar.
Defect light bulbs should only be replaced with light bulbs of the same type. The designation is located on the light socket or the glass bulb.
Changing certain bulbs is not something which you can do yourself, but requires to be done by a specialist. Ot her parts of the vehicle must be removed in order to change the light bulbs. This applies, in particular, to bulbs which can only be reached from the engine compartment.
We therefore recommend that you have any bulbs changed by a Škoda Service Partner or, in exceptional cases, by ca lling on other professional assistance.
Please note that the engine compartment is a hazardous area ⇒page 198, “Working in the engine compartment”.
We recommend that you carry the set of light bulbs with you which was deliv- ered in your vehicle. Replacement light bulbs 7) are available at a Škoda Service Par tner.
The set of light bulbs can be stowed in the locable box in the spare wheel.
