14EFFECTIVE BRAKING
SC140A1-E Braking system performance and fric- tion material life are greatly affected by the driving style adopted. The follow- ing suggestions are made to assist inachieving the best results from the braking system.
o Anticipate the road and conditions ahead in order that heavy braking may be avoided.
o When descending long gradients, use the engine to assist in retardingthe vehicle to minimize the possibil-ity of brake fade occurring.
o When trailer towing, ensure that the
trailer brakes function correctly anduse engine braking to assist the vehicle braking system.
o Use only genuine Hyundai replace- ment brake pads and shoes to en-sure consistent friction characteris- tics and wear rates. o After driving through deep water
(e.g. fording), the brakes may be-come wet and performance reduced. Always check brake efficiency after emerging from the water and dry thebrakes by lightly depressing the brake pedal several times whilst driving slowly.
o Apply the parking brake only when the vehicle is at rest.
o Since the power assistance pro- vided by the brake servo is derived from the engine, coasting with the engine turned off or towing of thevehicle with the engine turned off will result in greatly increased pedal pressures being required to stop thevehicle.
o Do not hold the vehicle on the up-
grade with the accelerator pedal.This can cause the transmission to overheat. Always use the brake pedal or parking brake.
o The automatic transaxle may be
used to great effect if the vehiclebecomes stuck in snow or mud by allowing the vehicle to be rocked to and fro. The engine speed shouldbe held at approximately 1,000rpm by means of the accelerator pedal and the selector lever moved be-tween the "D" and "R" positions to induce a rocking motion.
o Do not depress the accelerator pedal
with the brakes applied and the se-lector at the "R", "D", "2" or "L" position.
o Turn the overdrive switch on for good fuel economy and smooth driv-ing. But if engine braking is neededin the "D" range or if repeated up- shifting and downshifting between the 3rd and 4th gear is needed whenclimbing a gentle slope, it is recom- mended that the overdrive switch be turned off. Turn the overdriveswitch back on immediately after- ward.

Inspect the manual transaxle oil ac-
cording to the maintenance schedule. NOTE:
If the oil level is low, check for
possible leaks before adding oil. Do not overfill.

o Automatic transaxle fluid
The fluid level should be in the "HOT"
range of the dipstick, after engine and transaxle are at normal operating tem- perature. Check the AutomaticTransaxle Fluid level with the engine running and the transaxle in neutral, with the parking brake properly ap-plied. Use Hyundai Genuine ATF SP- III, DIAMOND ATF SP-III, SK ATF SP-III or other brands appraoved byHyundai Motor Co., when adding or changing fluid. 6ZF070F1-A
o Brake hoses and lines
Visually check for proper installation,
chafing, cracks, deterioration and anyleakage. Replace any deteriorated or damaged parts immediately.

o Brake fluid
Check brake fluid level in the brake
fluid reservoir. The level should be between "MIN" and "MAX" marks on the side of the reservoir. Use only hydraulic brake fluid conforming to DOT 3 or DOT 4.

o Rear brake drums and linings/ parking brake
Check the rear brake drums and lin-
ings for scoring, burning, leaking fluid, broken parts, and excessive wear. Inspect the parking brake system in-cluding the parking brake lever and cables. For detailed service proce- dures, refer to the Shop Manual. 6ZF070J1-A
o Brake pads, calipers and
rotors
Check the pads for excessive wear,discs for run out and wear, and cali- pers for fluid leakage. 6ZF070K1-A o Exhaust pipe and muffler Visually inspect the exhaust pipes, muffler and hangers for cracks, dete- rioration, or damage. Start the engine and listen carefully for any exhaustgas leakage. Tighten connections or replace parts as necessary. 6ZF070L1-A
o Suspension mounting bolts
Check the suspension connections for looseness or damage. Retighten to the specified torque.

18BRAKE SYSTEM CHECKING
SG120D1-E Brake Fluid Level
The fluid level in the brake fluid reser- voir should be checked periodically.The level should be between the "MIN" and "MAX" marks on the side of the reservoir. If the level is at or below the"MIN" mark, fluid should be added hav- ing carefully cleaned the area surround- ing the reservoir cap to ensure that dirtis not allowed to enter the system. It should be borne in mind that the brake fluid level will decrease slightly as thefriction linings of the pads and shoes become worn and that this is a normal condition.
! CAUTION:
The automatic transaxle unit is a precision engineered assembly and correct operation is dependant upon the exclusion of dirt and lint from theunit. Therefore, it is imperative that only lint free cloth (eg nylon) is used for wiping the dipstick and that thearea around the dipstick is thor- oughly clean prior to level checking or adding fluid.
Fluid Capacity The total fluid capacity of the transaxle unit is 6.1 litres. SG120A1-E
SG120C2-E Brake Fluid Recommendations Only brake fluid conforming to DOT 3 or DOT 4 specifications or higher may beused in the braking system. Care should be taken to observe the instructions and precautions printed upon the con-tainer.! CAUTION:
Correct operation of the braking sys- tem is essential to the safe operationof the vehicle and therefore, any main- tenance operations other than those listed below should be entrusted to aHyundai dealer.
