Doors and Locks
Door Locks
{CAUTION:
Unlocked doors can be dangerous.
Passengers — especially children — can
easily open the doors and fall out of a
moving vehicle. When a door is locked,
the handle will not open it. You increase
the chance of being thrown out of the
vehicle in a crash if the doors are not
locked. So, wear safety belts properly
and lock the doors whenever you drive.
Young children who get into unlocked
vehicles may be unable to get out. A child
can be overcome by extreme heat and
can suffer permanent injuries or even
death from heat stroke. Always lock
your vehicle whenever you leave it.
Outsiders can easily enter through an
unlocked door when you slow down or
stop your vehicle. Locking your doors
can help prevent this from happening. There are several ways to lock and unlock your vehicle.
From the outside, use your key or the remote keyless
entry transmitter. SeeRemote Keyless Entry System
Operation on page 2-4.
To manually unlock the doors from the outside, insert
the key and turn it toward the front of the vehicle.
To manually lock the doors from the outside, insert
the key and turn it toward the rear of the vehicle.
Using the key in the driver’s door will lock or unlock
all the doors at the same time. Using the key in the
front passenger’s door will only unlock that door.
All doors, except the driver’s door, can be locked
from the outside by pushing down the manual door
lock and then closing the door. The driver’s door lock
cannot be pushed in while the door is opened.
Upon leaving the vehicle, the driver’s door can only
be locked from the outside by using the key or the
remote keyless entry transmitter.

Opening a Rear Door When the
Security Lock is On
1. Unlock the door from the inside.
2. Open the door from the outside.
If you do not cancel the security lock, adults or older
children who ride in the rear will not be able to open the
rear door from the inside. You should let adults and
older children know how to cancel the locks.
Canceling the Rear Door Security Lock
1. Unlock the door from the inside and open the
door from the outside.
2. Move the lever downward to unlock.
3. Do the same for the other rear door.
The rear door locks will now work normally.
Lockout Protection
This feature helps prevent locking your key in the car.
The driver’s door can only be locked with the door
closed. From the outside of the vehicle, close the
driver’s door and lock it using the key or the remote
keyless entry transmitter.
This feature cannot guarantee that you will never be
locked out of your vehicle. Always remember to
take your key with you.
Trunk
To unlock the trunk from the outside, use the key or the
remote keyless entry transmitter.
When closing the trunk, close from the center to ensure
it fully latches.
{CAUTION:
It can be dangerous to drive with the trunk
lid open because carbon monoxide (CO) gas
can come into your vehicle. You cannot see or
smell CO. It can cause unconsciousness and
even death. If you must drive with the trunk
lid open or if electrical wiring or other cable
connections must pass through the seal
between the body and the trunk lid:
Make sure all other windows are shut.
Turn the fan on your heating or cooling
system to its highest speed and select
the control setting that will force outside
air into your vehicle. See Climate Control
System.
If you have air outlets on or under the
instrument panel, open them all the way.
SeeEngine Exhaust on page 2-29.

Steering in Emergencies
There are times when steering can be more effective
than braking. For example, you come over a hill and
find a truck stopped in your lane, or a car suddenly pulls
out from nowhere, or a child darts out from between
parked cars and stops right in front of you. You
can avoid these problems by braking — if you can stop
in time. But sometimes you cannot; there is not room.
That is the time for evasive action — steering around
the problem.
Your vehicle can perform very well in emergencies
like these. First apply your brakes. SeeBraking
on page 4-6. It is better to remove as much speed as
you can from a possible collision. Then steer around
the problem, to the left or right depending on the
space available. An emergency like this requires close attention and a
quick decision. If you are holding the steering wheel
at the recommended 9 and 3 o’clock positions, you can
turn it a full 180 degrees very quickly without removing
either hand. But you have to act fast, steer quickly,
and just as quickly straighten the wheel once you have
avoided the object.
The fact that such emergency situations are always
possible is a good reason to practice defensive driving
at all times and wear safety belts properly.
