SETTING THE DESIRED SPEED
The transmission must be in “D” before
you set the cruise control speed in the
conventional cruise control mode.
Bring your vehicle to the desired speed,
push the lever down in the “− SET” direc-
tion and release it. This sets the vehicle
at that speed and the display shows the
preset speed. You can now take your foot
off the accelerator pedal.
If you need to accelerate—for example,
when passing—depress the accelerator
pedal enough for the vehicle to exceed
the preset speed. When you release the
accelerator pedal, the vehicle will return to
the speed set prior to acceleration. You cannot set a desired speed if the
master warning light comes on, the alarm
sounds and the display indicates the
warning code “E3”. If this code appears
on the display, see “CONVENTIONAL
CRUISE CONTROL MODE FAILURE
WARNING” on page 218.
CANCELLING THE PRESET SPEED
You can cancel the preset speed by doing
any of the following:
a. Pulling the lever in the “CANCEL” direction.
b. Depressing the brake pedal. c. Pressing the “ON −OFF” button.
In the following cases, the preset speed
automatically cancels out: a. The vehicle speed falls below about 40km/h (25 mph).
b. If the vehicle speed drops 16 km/h (10 mph) below the preset speed, the pre-
set speed will also automatically be
cancelled.
c. The slip indicator light blinks and an alarm sounds. (This occurs when the
vehicle is about to skid.)
If cancelled by b., the preset speed data
is cleared and you must set the speed
from the beginning. If the preset speed automatically cancels
out for other than the above reasons, do
not operate the cruise control. Although it
is no problem to continue driving, have
your vehicle checked by your Toyota deal-
er at the earliest opportunity.
RESETTING TO A FASTER SPEED
Push the lever up in the “+ RES” direction
and hold it. Release the lever when the
desired speed is attained. While the lever
is held up, the vehicle will gradually gain
speed.
When the difference between the actual
vehicle speed and the set speed is less
than 5 km/h (3 mph), the set speed can
be increased 1.6 km/h (1 mph) each time
by pushing the lever up in the “+ RES”
direction quickly within 0.6 seconds.
However, a faster way to reset is to ac-
celerate the vehicle and then push the
lever down in the “− SET” direction.

RESETTING TO A SLOWER SPEED
Push the lever down in the “− SET” direc-
tion and hold it. Release the lever when
the desired speed is attained. While the
lever is held down, the vehicle speed will
gradually decrease.
When the difference between the actual
vehicle speed and the set speed is less
than 5 km/h (3 mph), the set speed can
be lowered 1.6 km/h (1 mph) each time
by pushing the lever down in the “ − SET”
direction quickly within 0.6 seconds.
However, a faster way to reset is to ac-
celerate the vehicle and then push the
lever down in the “− SET” direction.
Even if you downshift from “D” to “4” in
the conventional cruise control mode, en-
gine braking will not be enabled because
this mode is not cancelled. To decrease
the vehicle’s speed, reset to a slower
speed with the cruise control lever or de-
press the brake pedal. If you use the
brake pedal, cruise control is cancelled. RESUMING THE PRESET SPEED
If the preset speed is cancelled by pulling
the lever, by depressing the brake pedal
or by activating the vehicle stability con-
trol system, pushing the lever up in the
“+ RES” direction will restore the speed
set prior to cancellation.
If the preset speed is cancelled when ve-
hicle speed falls below about 40 km/h (25
mph), the preset speed will be resumed
when vehicle speed exceeds about 40
km/h (25 mph) again.
CONVENTIONAL CRUISE CONTROL
MODE FAILURE WARNING
If there is trouble in the conventional
cruise control mode, the “CRUISE” indica-
tor light in the instrument cluster flashes,
the master warning light comes on and
the alarm sounds, the warning code “E3”
will appear on the display.
If a system malfunction is detected when
the conventional cruise control mode is in
the ready mode or operating, the master
warning light comes on, an alarm sounds
and the above code appears.If this code appears, press the “ON
−OFF”
button to turn the system off and then
push it again to turn it on. If the setting
still cannot be made or the same code
appears again, the system might have
malfunctioned. Although there is no prob-
lem to continue driving, please contact
your Toyota dealer.

This section describes some of the basic
features on Toyota audio systems. Some
information may not pertain to your sys-
tem.
Your audio system works when the ignition
key is in the “ACC” or “ON” position.
TURNING THE SYSTEM ON AND OFF
Push “PWR·VOL” to turn the audio system
on and off.
Push “AM”, “FM”, “TAPE”, “DISC” or
“LOAD” to turn on that function without
pushing “PWR·VOL”. To turn on the cas-
sette or compact disc player, a cassette
or compact disc must be loaded in the
player.
You can turn on each player by inserting
a cassette tape or compact disc.
You can turn off each player by ejecting
the cassette tape or compact disc. If the
audio system was previously off, then the
entire audio system will be turned off
when you eject the cassette tape or com-
pact disc. If the other function was pre-
viously playing, it will come on again.
SWITCHING BETWEEN FUNCTIONS
Push “AM”, “FM”, “TAPE”, “DISC” or
“LOAD” if the system is already on but
you want to switch from one function to
another.TONE AND BALANCE
For details about your system’s tone and
balance controls, see the description of
your own system.
Tone
How good an audio program sounds to
you is largely determined by the mix of
the treble, midrange and bass levels. In
fact, different kinds of music and vocal
programs usually sound better with differ-
ent mixes of treble, midrange and bass.
Balance
A good balance of the left and right stereo
channels and of the front and rear sound
levels is also important.
Keep in mind that if you are listening to
a stereo recording or broadcast, changing
the right/left balance will increase the vol-
ume of one group of sounds while de-
creasing the volume of another.
YOUR RADIO ANTENNA
Your vehicle has the mast type antenna or
on−
glass antenna printed on the inside of
the rear quarter window.
Mast type antenna—To remove an anten-
na, carefully turn it counterclockwise.
NOTICE
 Mast type antenna:
To prevent damage to the antenna,
make sure it is removed before
driving your Toyota through an au-
tomatic car wash.
 Onglass antenna:
Attaching the film (especially con-
ductive or metallic type) on the rear
glass will noticeably reduce the
sensitivity of the radio.

YOUR CASSETTE PLAYER
When you insert a cassette, the exposed
tape should face to the right.
NOTICE
Do not oil any part of the player and
do not insert anything other than cas-
sette tapes into the slot, or the tape
player may be damaged.
YOUR COMPACT DISC PLAYER (type
11 and 12)
When you insert a disc, gently push it in
with the label side up. The player will play
from track 1 through to the end of the
disc. Then it will play from track 1 again.
NOTICE
Never try to disassemble or oil any
part of the compact disc player. Do
not insert anything other than com-
pact discs into the slot.
The player is intended for use with 12 cm
(4.7 in.) discs only.YOUR COMPACT DISC PLAYER WITH
CHANGER (type 2)
When you insert a disc, push the “LOAD”
button and gently push the disc in with
the label side up. This compact disc play-
er can store up to six discs. The player
will play from track 1 through to the end
of the disc. Then it will play from track
1 of the next disc.
NOTICE
Never try to disassemble or oil any
part of the compact disc player. Do
not insert anything other than com-
pact discs into the slot.
The player is intended for use with 12 cm
(4.7 in.) discs only.
NOTICE

Do not stack up two discs for in-
sertion, or it will cause damage to
the compact disc changer. Insert
only one compact disc into slot at
a ti me.
 Never try to disassemble or oil any
part of the compact disc player. Do
not insert anything except a com-
pact disc into the slot.
