STARTING THE ENGINE
Special features of vehicles with an
automatic transmission
Depress the brake pedal with the
lever in the Nor Pposition.
Note:
- if any one of the starting conditions is not applied, the message “brake
+ start” is displayed on the
instrument panel.
- in some cases it will be necessary to move the steering wheel while
pressing Start button 3to assist in
unlocking the steering column; a
message on the instrument panel
“Steering not unlocked” warns of
this.
Remote control RENAULT card
The message Insert card appears on
trip computer display 1.
Insert the RENAULT card fully into
card reader 2.
Hands-free RENAULT card
The card must be in detection area 4
(passenger compartment and
luggage compartment except for
certain high-up areas such as the
sun visor, spectacle holder,
dashboard upper section, etc.) or in
the card reader 2.
Starting conditions.
Follow the starting instructions on
the instrument panel describing the
following conditions:
To start, depress the brake or clutch
pedal (the pedal must be held down
for the duration of starting) and
press button 3. If a gear is selected,
only depressing the clutch pedal
will enable starting.

STARTING THE ENGINE (continued)
Starting with the luggage
compartment open (in hands-free
mode)
Insert the card in card reader 2after
having pulled back the cover, if you
wish to start the engine with the
luggage compartment open.Operating faults
In certain cases, the RENAULT card
may not work:
- if the vehicle is located in a zone of high electromagnetic radiation;
- if appliances are operating on the same frequency as the card (mobile
phone, video game, etc.);
- drain on the RENAULT Card battery, flat battery, etc.
Trip computer display 1 will show
the message Card not detected
followed by Insert card.
Insert the RENAULT card fully into
card reader 2.
Accessories function

STOPPING THE ENGINE
If the card is no longer in the card
detection zone, after pressing once,
the messages “confirm engine stop”
and “press STOP twice” appear on
the instrument panel.
To confirm that you want the engine
to switch off, press button 3twice
more.
Conditions for stopping the
engine
- vehicle stationary;
- lever in position Nor Pfor vehicles
with automatic transmission;
- press button 3;
With the engine switched off, the
accessories currently being used
(radio, heating and ventilation, etc.)
will continue to function for about
20 minutes.
When the driver’s door is opened,
the accessories stop working. Remote control RENAULT card
With the card in reader
2, one press
on the engine Start/Stop button
switches the engine off. Removing
the card from the reader locks the
steering column (check that it has
locked).
If the card is no longer in the reader,
after pressing once, the messages
“Confirm engine stop” and “Press
STOP twice” appear on the
instrument panel.
To confirm that you want the engine
to switch off, press button 3twice
more.
RENAULT card in hands-free mode
With the card in the vehicle,
pressing the engine Start/Stop
button 3cuts out the engine and
locks the steering column (check
that it locks correctly).
2.05
Never leave your vehicle with the RENAULT card
inside and never leave a
child (or a pet)
unsupervised.
There is a risk that they could
start the engine or operate
electrical equipment (electric
windows) and trap part of their
body (neck, arms, hands, etc.).
Risk of serious injury.
Never switch off the ignition
before the vehicle has stopped
completely. Once the engine has
stopped, the brake servo, power
assisted steering, etc. and the
passive safety devices such as
airbags and pretensioners will no
longer operate.

SPECIAL FEATURES OF PETROL VERSIONS
If you notice any of the above faults,
have the necessary repairs carried
out as soon as possible by your
RENAULT Dealer.
These faults may be avoided by
regularly taking your vehicle to your
RENAULT Dealer at the intervals
specified in your Warranty and
Services booklet.
Starting faults
To avoid damaging the catalytic
converter, do not keep trying to start
the engine (using the Start button, or
by pushing or towing the vehicle)
without having identified and
corrected the starting fault .
If the fault cannot be identified, do
not continue to try to start the
engine, contact a RENAULT Dealer.
The following operating conditions
should be avoided:
low fuel level warning light is lit,
are not approved by RENAULT.
Or operating faults such as:
fuel or spark plug disconnected
resulting in the engine misfiring
and bucking while driving,
may cause the catalytic converter to
overheat and thus reduce its
efficiency, or destroy it and cause
heat damage to the vehicle .
Do not park the vehicle or
run the engine in locations
where combustible
substances or materials such
as grass or leaves can come into
contact with the hot exhaust system.

SPECIAL FEATURES OF DIESEL VERSIONS
Precautions to be taken in winter
To avoid any faults in icy weather:
fully charged,
full to avoid water vapour
condensing and accumulating at
the bottom of the tank.
Diesel engine speed
Diesel engines are fitted with
injection equipment
which prevents
the engine speed from being
exceeded irrespective of the gear
selected.
Running out of fuel
If the fuel tank has been drained
completely , you may start the
engine normally after refilling the
fuel tank provided that the battery is
well charged.
However, if after a few seconds and
several attempts the engine fails to
start, contact a RENAULT Dealer.

substances or materials such
as grass or leaves can come into

ADVICE ON EMISSION CONTROL, FUEL ECONOMY AND DRIVING (continued)
in fuel consumption (especially in
urban conditions) when air
conditioning is used on vehicles
equipped with air conditioning .
For vehicles fitted with manual air
conditioning, switch off the
system when it is not required.
Some advice for reducing
consumption and helping to
preserve the environment:
Drive with the air vents on and the
windows closed.
If the vehicle has been parked in
the sun, open the doors for a few
moments to let the hot air escape
before starting the engine.

ELECTRONIC STABILITY PROGRAM: ESP WITH UNDERSTEER CONTROL
When the function begins to
operate, warning light Aflashes to
warn you.
If the warning light comes on
accompanied by the “ASR/ESP
deactivated” message when the
engine is started, slowly turn the
steering wheel from lock to lock to
reinitialise the system.
Understeer control
This system optimises the operation
of the ESP in the case of pronounced
understeering (loss of front axle
roadholding).
Operating faults
If the system detects an operating
fault, the message “Check traction
control” or “ESP/ASR not
functioning” is displayed on the
instrument panel display along with
indicator light and indicator
light A.
Contact your RENAULT Dealer.
This system helps to keep control of
the vehicle in critical driving
situations (avoiding an obstacle, loss
of grip when cornering, etc.) and
works in conjunction with the
understeer control system.
Operating principle
A sensor in the steering wheel
detects the direction selected by the
driver.
Other sensors throughout the vehicle
measure the actual direction.
The system compares the direction
selected by the driver and the actual
direction of the vehicle and corrects
this as necessary by applying the
brakes selectively and/or acting on
the engine power.
2.19
This function is an
additional aid in case of
critical driving conditions
to enable the vehicle
behaviour to be adapted to suit
the driving conditions.
However, the function does not
take the place of the driver. It
does not increase the vehicle’s
limits and should not encourage
you to drive more quickly.
Therefore, it can under no
circumstances replace the
vigilance or responsibility of the
driver when manoeuvring the
vehicle (the driver must always
be ready for sudden incidents
which may occur when driving).

TRACTION CONTROL: ASR
Operating principle
Using the wheel sensors, the system
measures and compares the speed of
the drive wheels at all times and
slows down their over-rotation.
If a wheel is starting to spin, the
system brakes automatically until
the drive supplied becomes
compatible with the level of grip. The system also adjusts the engine
speed to the grip available under the
wheels, independently of the
pressure exerted on the accelerator
pedal.
When the function begins to
