Locking and unlocking
SmartKey with KEYLESS-GO*
Vehicles equipped with KEYLESS-GO come
with two SmartKeys with KEYLESS-GO,
each with remote control and a removable
mechanical key. The locking tabs for the
mechanical key portion of the two
SmartKeys are a different color to help dis-
tinguish each SmartKey unit.
The KEYLESS-GO function is integrated
into the SmartKey. On these vehicles, the
validity of the SmartKey with KEYLESS-GO
is checked every time you pull a door
handle.
If the SmartKey with KEYLESS-GO is valid,
your vehicle unlocks
the doors

When leaving the vehicle, always take the
SmartKey with KEYLESS-GO* with you, and
lock the vehicle. Do not leave children unat-
tended in the vehicle, or with access to an
unlocked vehicle. Unsupervised use of vehi-
cle equipment may cause an accident
and/or serious personal injury.!To prevent possible malfunction, avoid
exposing the SmartKey with
KEYLESS-GO to high levels of electro-
magnetic radiation.iYou can also open and close the power
windows (
page 249) and power
tilt/sliding sunroof* (
page 253) us-
ing the SmartKey.

If you frequently travel alone, you may wish
to reprogram the SmartKey with
K E Y L E S S - G O s o w h e n y o u , p u l l t h e d r i v e r ’ s
door handle only the driver’s door and the
fuel filler flap unlocks.
Press and hold buttonsŒ and‹
simultaneously for about five seconds
until battery check lamp5 flashes
twice.
The SmartKey with KEYLESS-GO will then
function as follows:
Unlocking driver’s door and fuel filler
flap
Pull the driver’s door handle.
All turn signal lamps flash once. The
locking knob in the driver’s door moves
up. The anti-theft alarm system is
disarmedGlobal unlocking
Pull the door handle on the passenger
side.
All turn signal lamps flash once. The
locking knobs in the doors move up.
The anti-theft alarm system is
disarmed
Global locking
Press lock button at door handle or
trunk lid.
All turn signal lamps flash three times.
The locking knobs in the doors move
down. The anti-theft alarm system is
armed.Restoring to factory setting
Press and hold buttonsŒ and‹
simultaneously for about six seconds
until battery check lamp5 flashes
twice.
iYou can also lock the vehicle using the
lock button at trunk lid (
page 103).
!If you can no longer lock or unlock the
vehicle with the SmartKey with
KEYLESS-GO, then the batteries in the
SmartKey are discharged, the
SmartKey with KEYLESS-GO is mal-
functioning or the vehicle battery is
drained.
Check the batteries in the
SmartKey (
page 103) and re-
place them if necessary
(
page 402).
Use the mechanical key to unlock
the driver’s door (
page 397) and
the trunk (
page 398).

SmartKey batteries are discharged.
Replace the batteries (

You can obtain the required batteries
at any authorized Mercedes-Benz
Center.
iIf the batteries are checked within sig-
nal range of the vehicle, pressing
the‹ orŒ button will lock or
unlock the vehicle accordingly.
iTo prevent a possible inadvertent
lockout, the trunk lid will open
automatically if a SmartKey with
KEYLESS-GO* is recognized inside the
vehicle or in the trunk.

Trunk lid emergency release
The emergency release button is located
on the inside of the trunk lid.
1Emergency release button
Briefly press emergency release
button1.
The trunk lid unlocks and the trunk lid
opens.Illumination of the emergency release but-
ton:
The button will flash for 30 minutes
after opening the trunk.
The button will flash for 60 minutes
after closing the trunk.
!The trunk lid swings open upwards au-
tomatically.
iThe emergency release button unlocks
and opens the trunk while the vehicle is
standing still or in motion.iThe emergency release button does
not open the trunk lid if the vehicle
battery is discharged or disconnected.
iIf the emergency release button is
pressed and the vehicle was centrally
locked, the exterior lamps will flash and
the alarm will sound as the trunk lid
opens. To cancel the alarm, do one of
the following:
press buttonŒ or‹ on the
SmartKey.
insert the SmartKey in the starter
switch.
In vehicles with KEYLESS-GO*:
pull the outside door handle.
press the start/stop button.

Good visibility
Rear window defroster
The rear window defroster uses a large
amount of power. To keep the battery
drain to a minimum, switch off the
defroster as soon as the rear window is
clear. The defroster is automatically
deactivated after approximately
6 to 17 minutes of operation depending on
the outside temperature.Activating
Press buttonF or1 in the
climate control panel (
page 195) or
in automatic climate control panel
(
page 195).
The indicator lamp on the button
comes on.
Deactivating
Press buttonF or1 again.
The indicator lamp on the button goes
out.
Warning!

Any accumulation of snow and ice should be
removed from the rear window before
driving. Visibility could otherwise be
impaired, endangering you and others.!If the rear window defroster switches
off too soon and the indicator lamp
starts flashing, this means that too
many electrical consumers are
operating simultaneously and there is
insufficient voltage in the battery. The
system responds automatically by
deactivating the rear window defroster.
As soon as the battery has sufficient
voltage, the rear window defroster
automatically switches on again.

Automatic climate control (CLK 500/CLK 55 AMG)
Residual heat and ventilation*
(available on Automatic climate control panel design A only)
With the engine switched off, it is possible
to continue to heat or ventilate the interior
for up to 30 minutes. This feature makes
use of the residual heat produced by the
engine.
Activating
Switch off ignition (

The indicator lamp on the button
comes on.Deactivating

The residual heat is automatically turned
off:
when the ignition is switched on
after about 30 minutes
if the battery voltage drops
!If the air conditioning cannot be turned
on again, this indicates that the air
conditioning is losing refrigerant. The
compressor has turned itself off.
Have the air conditioning checked at
the nearest authorized Mercedes-Benz
Center.
iHow long the system will provide
heating depends on
the coolant temperature
the temperature set by the operator
The blower will run at speed setting 1
regardless of the air distribution
control setting.

Synchronizing power windows
The power windows must be resynchro-
nized each time
after the battery has been
disconnected.
if the power windows cannot be fully
opened (Express-open) or closed
(Express-close).
Switch ignition on (
page 36).
Pull the power window switches until
the side windows are closed.
Hold the switches for approximately
one second.
The power windows are synchronized.
Warning!

When closing the windows and the tilt/slid-
ing sunroof*, make sure there is no danger
of anyone being harmed by the closing pro-
cedure.
The windows will not automatically re-open
if blocked during convenience closing.
If potential danger exists, proceed as fol-
lows:
Release the lock button.
Pull on the door handle and hold firmly.
The side windows and the tilt/sliding
sunroof* will open for about two sec-
onds if the door handle is held but the
door not opened.

Synchronizing the power tilt/sliding sunroof
The tilt/sliding sunroof must be
synchronized each time after:
the battery has been disconnected or
discharged
the tilt/sliding sunroof has been closed
manually (
page 401)
the tilt/sliding sunroof does not open
smoothly
a malfunction
Switch on the ignition (
page 36).
Move and hold the sunroof switch in
the direction of arrow 1 (
page 251)
until the tilt/sliding sunroof is fully
raised at the rear.
Hold the sunroof switch for
approximately one second.
Check the Express-open feature
(page 252).
If the tilt/sliding sunroof opens
completely, the tilt/sliding sunroof is
synchronized. Otherwise repeat the
above steps.
Warning!
G
When closing the windows and the
tilt/sliding sunroof, make sure there is no
danger of anyone being harmed by the clos-
ing procedure.
The tilt/sliding sunroof will not automatical-
ly reopen if blocked during convenience
closing.
If potential danger exists, proceed as fol-
lows:
Release the lock button.
Pull on the door handle and hold firmly.
The side windows and the tilt/sliding
sunroof will open for as long as the door
handle is held but the door not opened.
