6CHECKING THE ENGINE OIL
G030A02O-GAT
Recommended Oil Gasoline Engine Engine oil is essential to the perfor- mance and service of the engine. It is suggested that you check the oil level at least once a week in normal useand more often if you are on a trip or driving in severe conditions. The engine oil quality should meet the following classification. API SJ, SL or ABOVE, ILSAC GF-3 or ABOVE G030B01JMNOTE:
o For good fuel economy, SAE 5W-20 (5W-30), ILSAC GF-3 en-gine oil is preferred regardless of regional option and engine variation.
o If SAE 5W-20, ILSAC GF-3 en- gine oil is not available, second-ary recommended engine oil forcorresponding temperature range can be used.

Recommended Oil Diesel Engine
G030B01AEngine oil is essential to the perfor-
mance and service of the engine. It is suggested that you check the oil level every 500km or before starting a long trip and more often if you are drivingin severe conditions.
The engine oil quality should meet
the following classification:
API class: CH-4 or ABOVE ACEA class: B4 or ABOVE NOTE: SAE 0W-30 oil is for extra cold
zone and to be restricted by driv- ing condition and dealing area. (Especially, not recommended forsustained high loaded and high speed operation.)

CAUTION:
Slowly pour the recommended oil using by a funnel. Do not overfillnot to damage engine.
!
NOTE: Always dispose of used engine oil in an environmentally acceptablemanner. It is suggested that it be placed in a sealed container and taken to a service station for maybereclaimation. Do not pour the oil on the ground or put it in with the household trash.
Be sure that the mounting surfaceon the engine is clean and that theold gasket is removed completely. Lubricate the new gasket on the filter with clean engine oil beforeinstallation.
7. Remove the engine oil level dip- stick.
8. Refill the crankcase with the rec-
ommended engine oil. Refer tothe specification in chapter 9 for engine oil capacity.
!
9. Start the engine and check to be sure no oil is leaking from the drain plug or oil filter.
10.Shut off the engine and recheck the oil level. WARNING:
Used motor oil may cause irrita-
tion or cancer of the skin if left in contact with the skin for prolongedperiods of time. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water as soon as possible afterhandling used oil. G040B04FC-GAT

Oil filler cap
The engine oil and filter should be
changed at those intervals specified in the maintenance schedule in Sec- tion 5. If the car is being driven in severe conditions, more frequent oiland filter changes are required.
The procedure for changing the oil
and filter is as follows:
1. Park the car on level ground and
set the parking brake. Start the engine and let it warm up until the needle on the coolant temperature gauge moves above the lowestmark.

Turn the engine off and place the gear selector lever in "P" (auto-matic) or reverse gear (manual transaxle).
2. Open the hood and remove the engine oil level dipstick.
3. Loosen the oil filter upper cap with a proper tool from the oil filter housing until an O-ring is seen. Then, drain the oil completely. 4. Remove the engine oil filler cap.
5. Slide underneath the car and
loosen the oil pan drain plug by turning it counterclockwise oil pan with a wrench of the proper size. Be sure that a drain pan is inposition to catch the oil as it drains out, then remove the drain plug.
WARNING:
Be very careful when draining the
engine oil as it may be hot enough to burn you!
6. When the oil has stopped drain- ing, replace the drain plug using a new gasket and retighten by turn- ing it clockwise.
Oil pan drain plug tightening torque : 3.5 ~ 4.5 kgf.m
7. Pull out the oil filter upper cap with element from the oil filter housing. Using a clean cloth, remove any dirt or oil accumulated around the oil filter housing. 8. After mounting a new centerpipe
O-ring, new oil filter element andnew O-ring to upper cap, install the upper cap to oil filter housing and retighten by turning it clock-wise. Do not over-tighten. Tightening torque : 2.5 kgf.m
CAUTION:
Don't use old oil filter upper cap O-ring and centerpipe O-ring
9. Refill the crankcase with the rec- ommended engine oil. Refer to the specification in chapter 9 for engine oil capacity.
CAUTION:
Slowly pour the recommended oilby using a funnel. Do not overfill not to damage the engine.
! CAUTION:
Slowly loosen the oil filter upper cap not to overflow the oil.

AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE
Transaxle fluid in the automatic transaxle should be checked at those intervals specified in the vehicle main- tenance schedule in Section 5. NOTE: Automatic transaxle fluid is a red color. As driving distance in- creases, the fluid color turns dark-ish red gradually. It is a normal condition and you should not judge the need to replace basedupon the changing color. You must replace the automatictransaxle fluid in accordance withintervals specified in the vehicle maintenance schedule in section 5. Recommended Fluid
Your Hyundai automatic transaxle is
specially designed to operate with HYUNDAI GENUINE ATF SP III, DIA- MOND ATF SP-III, SK ATF SP III orother brands approved by Hundai Motor Co,. Damage caused by a nonspecified fluid is not covered byyour new vehicle limited warranty.

To Check the Maunal Transaxle Fluid Level
G100B01L
Park the car on level ground with the
engine off.
1. Using a wrench of the correct size,
loosen the oil filler plug by turning it counterclockwise and remove it with your fingers.
2. Use your finger or suitable tool to feel inside the hole. The oil level should be at its bottom edge. If it isnot, check for leaks before adding oil. To refill the transaxle or bring the oil level up,add oil slowly until itreaches the proper level. Do not overfill. CAUTION:
Use of aftermarket ATF additives
may cause damage to the auto-matic transaxle. Only use HYUNDAI GENUINE ATF SP III, DIAMONDATF SP III, SK ATF SP III or other brands approved by Hyundai Mo- tor Co., If you are having yourvehicle serviced at a facility other than a Hyundai dealer, verify ATF is used for your vehicle.

To check the power steering fluid level, be sure the ignition is "OFF",then check to make certain that the power steering fluid level is between the "MAX" and "MIN" level markingson the fluid reservoir. NOTE: Grinding noise from the power steering pump may be heard im- mediately after the engine is startedin extremely cold conditions (be- low - 20°C). If the noise stops dur- ing warm up, there is no abnormalfunction in the system. It is due to a power steering fluid characteris- tic in extremely cold conditions. Recommended Fluid Use PSF-3 type fluid NOTE: Do not start the engine when the power steering oil reservoir is empty.

CHECKING ELECTRIC COOLING FANS
G220A01A-AAT
WARNING:
The cooling fan is controlled by engine coolant temperature and may sometimes operate even whenthe engine is not running. Use extreme caution when working near the blades of the cooling fan,so that you are not injured by a rotating fan blade. As the engine coolant temperature decreases thefan will automatically shut off. This is a normal condition.POWER STEERING FLUID LEVEL
