CAUTION: Personal injury and damage to the vehicle may occur if jump starting is not per- formed correctly. If any doubt exists as to how this operation should be performed, seek assistance from qualified personnel. WARNING: Motor vehicle batteries contain sulphuric acid and emit hydrogen gas. Protective clothing should be worn and care exer- cised to prevent the acid from coming into contact with skin or clothing and the ve- hicle. Naked lights should not be permitted in the vicinity of the battery. Care should be exercised to prevent sparks occurring during connection. If acid accidentally comes into contact with skin or eyes, the affected area should immediately be flushed CAUTION: If the jump cable are incorrectly installed,
damage to the vehicle electrical system may occur, in particular the electronic components such as the Fuel Injection system computer and the Automatic
Transaxle computer. The battery must never be disconnected whilst the engine is running. SD040A2-E IF THE ENGINE OVERHEATS
If the temperature gauge indicates overheat- ing:
1. Pull off the road and stop as soon as it is safe to do so.
2. Place the gear selector lever in "P" (auto- matic), or neutral (manual transaxle) and set the parking brake. If the air condition- ing is on, turn it off.
3. If coolant is running out under the car or
steam is coming out from under the bonnet stop the engine. Do not open the bonnet until the coolant has stopped running or the steaming has stopped. If there is no visible loss of coolant and no steam, leave the engine running and check to be sure the engine cooling fan is operating.If the fan is not running, turn the engine off.
4. Check to see if the water pump drive belt is broken. If it is not missing, check to seethat it is tight.

1. Ensure that the booster battery is 12 volt
type. If the booster battery is installed in another vehicle, ensure that the two vehi- cles are not touching.
2. Turn off all unnecessary electrical equip- ment in both vehicles.
3. Ensure that the engine of the vehicle pro- viding the jump start is running prior to connection of the jump cables.
4. Connect the red jump cable to the positive (+) terminal of the booster battery and theother end to the positive (+) terminal of the discharged battery.
5. Attach the black jump cable to the nega- tive (-) terminal of the booster battery, andthe other end to a ground point within the engine compartment of the vehicle with the flat battery. Do not connect to the negative battery terminal of the flat battery since sparks may be generated with the subsequent risk of explosion.
6. Raise the booster vehicle engine speed to 2,000 r.p.m. and start the engine of thevehicle with the flat battery.
7. Switch "ON" the main beam headlamps before carefully removing the jumper cables in the reverse order of attachment. Once the jumper cables have been re- moved, switch "OFF" the main beam headlamps.

It is of the utmost importance that the following information is read and understood by thevehicle operator in order to prevent operationalproblems arising from damage to the catalyst.Damage to the catalyst will result if contamina-tion occurs through the use of leaded fuel.Whilst the vehicle is fitted with a reduced diam-eter filler neck to prevent charging of the fueltank with a leaded fuel pump nozzle, it ispossible that the use of funnels or jerry cans willpermit leaded fuel to be introduced into the fueltank.The catalyst is intolerant of unburnt fuel andtherefore if an engine misfire condition exists,damage to the catalyst will occur. It is impera-tive that if a misfire condition develops, thevehicle is immediately presented to a Hyundaiauthorised repairer for rectification. Similarly,the practice of certain ignition system diagno-sis procedures which involve inducing a misfire(cylinder power balance tests for example)may result in catalyst damage.For these reasons, it is advisable that theexhaust gas emission be tested at each routineservice with a gas analyzer having a Hydrocar-bon measuring facility to ensure continuedreliability of the catalyst.Push or tow starting of the vehicle is to beavoided since unburnt fuel may be enter thecatalyst and result in damage. (Note, it isimpossible to push or tow start a Hyundaimodel equipped with fuel injection since thefuel pump safety interlock will prevent the pumpfrom operating under these conditions).
Operation of the catalyst involves extremelyhigh temperatures being attained within thecatalytic convertor, and although the convertoris fitted with heat shields, it is important that thevehicle is not parked over combustible or vola-tile material which may result in fire.If the above precautions are not adhered to andthe catalyst becomes inoperative, the resultantincrease in core temperature will result in a"melt down" where the catalyst core will meltand subsequently may block the exhaust sys-tem.Due to the fragile nature of the catalyst ele-ment, it is important that damage does notoccur when the vehicle is raised by means of agarage jack. Care must also be exercised toavoid driving over road hazards or debris whichmay cause damage to the catalyst element. H020D01S-GAT ; For a diesel engineAll Hyundai vehicles are equipped with oxida- tion type catalytic converter to reduce the car-bon monoxide, hydrocarbons and particulatecontained in the exhaust gas.

B010B01A-AAT What About Gasohol? Gasohol (a mixture of 90% unleaded gasoline and 10% ethanol or grain alcohol) may be used in your Hyundai.However, if your engine develops driveability problems, the use of 100% unleaded gasoline is recommended.Fuels with unspecified quantities of alcohol, or alcohols other than ethanol, should not be used.
B010A01O-GAT Use Unleaded Gasoline Unleaded gasoline with a Pump Oc- tane Rating of 87 (Research Octane Number 91) or higher must be used inHyundai vehicle. If leaded gasoline is used, it will cause the catalytic con- verter to become ineffective and theemission control system to malfunc- tion. This can also result in increased maintenance expense. To avoid acci-dental use of leaded fuel, the large nozzle used with leaded gasoline at service stations can not be insertedinto fuel tank opening of Hyundai ve- hicle.
NOTE:
o For some countries, Hyundai
vehicles are designed to use leaded gasoline. When you aregoing to use leaded gasoline, ask to Hyundai dealer whether leaded gasoline in your vehicleis available or not.
o Octane Rating of leaded gaso-
line is same with unleaded one.
Use Diesel Diesel fuel of 52 to 54 cetane is used in Hyundai vehicle. If two types of diesel fuel are available, use summer or win- ter fuel properly according to the fol-lowing temperature conditions.
o Above -5°C (23°F) ... Summer type diesel fuel.
o Below -5°C (23°F) ... Winter type
diesel fuel.
Watch the fuel level in the tank very carefully : If the engine stops throughfuel failure, the circuits must be com- pletely purged to permit restarting. CAUTION:
o Do not let any gasoline or water enter the tank. This would make it necessary to drain it out and to bleed the lines to avoid jamming the injection pump and damag-ing the engine.
o In winter, in order to cut down
incidents due to freezing, paraf-fin oil may be added to the fuel if the temperature drops to below - 10°C. Never use more than 20% paraffin oil.

How-ever, you can contribute to the eco- nomical operation and durability of your Hyundai by observing the followingrecommendations during the first 2,000 km (1,200 miles).
o Don't drive faster than 88 km/h (55
mph).
o While driving, keep your engine speed (rpm, or revolutions per minute) between 2,000 rpm and 4,000 rpm.
o Use moderate acceleration. Don't start, depress the accelerator pedalfully.
o For the first 300 km (200 miles), try to avoid hard stops.
o Don't lug the engine (in other words, don't drive so slowly in toohigh a gear that the engine "bucks": shift to a lower gear).

The engine coolant should be com- patible with aluminum engine parts.Additional corrosion inhibitors or addi- tives should not be used. The cooling system must be maintained with thecorrect concentration and type of en- gine coolant to prevent freezing and corrosion. Never allow the concentra-tion of antifreeze to exceed the 60% level or go below the 35% level, or damage to the cooling system mayresult. For proper concentration when adding or replacing the engine cool- ant, refer to the following table. G050C01A-GAT
To Check the Coolant Level The level of the coolant should bebetween the "L" and "F" lines on thereservoir when the engine is cold. If the level is below the "L" mark, add engine coolant to bring it up between"L" and "F". If the level is low, inspect for coolant leaks and recheck the fluid level frequently. If the level dropsagain, visit your Hyundai dealer for an inspection and diagnosis of the rea- son.

To check the power steering fluid level, be sure the ignition is "OFF",then check to make certain that the power steering fluid level is between the "MAX" and "MIN" level markingson the fluid reservoir. NOTE: Grinding noise from the power steering pump may be heard im- mediately after the engine is startedin extremely cold conditions (be- low - 20°C). If the noise stops dur- ing warm up, there is no abnormalfunction in the system. It is due to a power steering fluid characteris- tic in extremely cold conditions. Recommended Fluid Use PSF-3 type fluid NOTE: Do not start the engine when the power steering oil reservoir is empty.

The cooling fan is controlled by engine coolant temperature and may sometimes operate even whenthe engine is not running. Use extreme caution when working near the blades of the cooling fan,so that you are not injured by a rotating fan blade. exhaust emission control system. Its purpose is to remove certain engine emission products from the engine'sexhaust. It looks something like a muffler and is located underneath the car in the exhaust system.

About the Catalytic Converter
Exhaust gases passing through the
catalytic converter cause it to operate at very high temperatures. As a re- sult, the introduction of large amounts of unburned gasoline may cause it tooverheat and create a fire hazard. This can be avoided by observing the following:
o Use unleaded fuel only.
o Maintain your engine in good con- dition. Extremely high converter temperatures can result from im-proper operation of the electrical, ignition or fuel injection systems. o If your engine stalls, pings, knocks,
or is hard to start, take your car to your Hyundai dealer as soon as possible and have the difficulty corrected.
o Avoid driving with a very low fuel level. If your run out of gasoline, itcould cause the engine to misfireand result in excessive loading of the catalytic converter.
o Avoid idling the engine for periods longer than 10 minutes.
o Your Hyundai should not be either pushed or pulled to get it started.This can cause the catalytic con- verter to overload.
o Take care not to stop your Hyundai
over any combustible material suchas grass, paper, leaves or rags. As these materials could come in con- tact with the catalytic converter andcould cause a fire.
o Do not touch the catalytic con-
verter or any other part of the ex-haust system while the engine is running as it is very hot and could result in burns.
o Remember that your Hyundai
dealer is your best source of assis-tance.
