A chime will sound if the key is left in the ignition and the driver's d\
oor is opened.
* The gear selector must be in the (P)ark position.
** Please be aware that leaving the key in this position will increase b\
attery drain.
Turn signals
1 Lane change position. In maneuvers such as lane changing, the driver can flash the turn signal\
s by
moving the turn signal lever to the first stop and holding it there. The\
lever will return to the neutral
position when released.
2 Signal lever engaged for normal turns.
3 High beam/low beam switch (headlights on).
Move the lever towards the steering wheel and release it.
Headlight flasher (headlights off).
Move the lever towards the steering wheel. The headlight high beam will \
be on until the lever is
released.
NOTE: If the turn signal indicator flashes faster than normal, check for a bur\
ned-out turn signal bulb.

Windshield wiper/washer
Windshield wipers/washers
0 Windshield wipers off
Intermittent wiper function. With the lever in this position, you can s\
et the wiper interval by
twisting control A upward to increase wiper speed or downward to decreas\
e the speed.
Rain sensor (option)
The rain sensor replaces the intermittent wiper function and automatical\
ly regulates wiper speed
according to the amount of water on the windshield. The sensitivity of the sensor can be adjusted by
twisting control A upward or downward.
Activating the rain sensor function:
1. Switch on the ignition.
2. Move the windshield wiper lever to the intermittent position.
The rain sensor is deactivated when the ignition is switched completely \
off.
To reactivate the rain sensor function:
1. Switch on the ignition.
2. Move the windshield wiper lever to position 0 and then back to the in\
termittent position.
CAUTION: When washing the car in an automatic carwash, etc move the windshield wi\
per lever to
position 0 or switch off the ignition completely to deactivate the rain \
sensor. If the sensor function is left
on, the wipers will start inadvertently in the carwash and could be dama\
ged.

High wiper speed
3 Windshield wiper/washer, headlight wiper/washer (certain models). Pull\
the lever toward you and
release it. The wipers will make 2-3 sweeps across the windshield and he\
adlights (certain models) after
the lever is released.
"Single sweep" position: Move the lever slightly upward from the 0 position for one sweep of
the wipers. The lever returns automatically to 0 when released.
Tailgate wiper/washer
Tailgate washer/wiper
A - Intermittent wiping
B - normal wiping
To operate the tailgate washer: Move the lever forward to start the tailgate washer.
Tailgate wiper and reverse gear
If the front wipers are on and the car is put into reverse gear, then th\
e tailgate wiper will go into
intermittent wiping function*.
If the tailgate wiper is already in normal wiping function, the normal w\
iping function will continue.
* Consult your Volvo retailer if you would like to have this function de\
activated.

Cold weather precautions
If you wish to check your car before the approach of cold weather, the f\
ollowing advice is worth noting:
l Make sure that the engine coolant contains 50 percent antifreeze. Any ot\
her mixture will reduce
freeze protection. This gives protection against freezing down to -31°\
F (-35°C). See section "Coolant".
The use of "recycled" antifreeze is not approved by Volvo. Different typ\
es of antifreeze must not
be mixed.
l Volvo recommends using only genuine Volvo antifreeze in your car's radia\
tor. Your local Volvo
retailer stocks plenty of Volvo engine coolant to protect your car durin\
g cold weather.
l Try to keep the fuel tank well filled - this prevents the formation of condensation in the tank. \
In
addition, in extremely cold weather conditions it is worthwhile to add f\
uel line de-icer before refueling.
l The viscosity of the engine oil is important. Oil with low viscosity (thinner oil) improves cold-
weather starting as well as decreasing fuel consumption while the engine\
is warming up. For winter use,
5W-30 oil, particularly the synthetic type *, is recommended. Be sure to\
use good quality oil but do not
use this cold-weather oil for hard driving or in warm weather. See secti\
on "Engine oil" for more
information.
l The load placed on the battery is greater during the winter since the windshield wipers, lighting, etc\
.
are used more often. Moreover, the capacity of the battery decreases as \
the temperature drops. In very
cold weather, a poorly charged battery can freeze and be damaged. It is \
therefore advisable to check the
state of charge more frequently and spray an anti-rust oil on the batter\
y posts.
l Volvo recommends the use of snow tires on all four wheels for winter driving - see section "Wheels
and tires".
l To prevent the washer fluid reservoir from freezing, add washer solvents containing antifreeze (see
page 136 for the location of the washer fluid reservoir). This is important sin\
ce dirt is often splashed on
the windshield during winter driving, requiring the frequent use of the \
washers and wipers. The Volvo
Washer Solvent should be diluted as follows:
Down to 14° F (-10° C): 1 part washer solvent and 4 parts water \
Down to 5° F (-15° C): 1 part washer solvent and 3 parts water
Down to 0° F (-18° C): 1 part washer solvent and 2 parts water
Down to -18° F (-28° C): 1 part washer solvent and 1 part water \
l Use Volvo Teflon Lock Spray in the locks.
NOTE: Avoid the use of de-icing sprays as they can cause damage to the locks.
W Winter/Wet driving mode - enhanced vehicle traction
l Mode W will only function if the gear selector is in the (D)rive posit\
ion.
l Press the button at the base of the gear selector to engage/disengage th\
is driving mode.
l An LED in the button will light up to indicate that W is engaged and this will also be displayed in the
instrument panel (see
page 27).
l This mode may be selected for starting/moving off on slippery roads.

Fuse box in the passenger compartment
This fuse box is located at the far left side of the instrument panel. E\
xtra fuses and the fuse removal tool
are also stored here. When replacing a blown fuse, be sure to replace it\
with a new one of the same color
and amperage (written on the fuse).
