Rotate crankshaft pulley in clockwise to align TDC identifica-
tion notch (without paint mark) with timing indicator on front
cover.

Make sure that both intake and exhaust cam noses of No. 1
cylinder (engine front side of left bank) are located as shown
in the figure.

If not, turn crankshaft one revolution (360 degrees) and align
as shown in the figure.
b. Measure valve clearance with feeler gauge.
*: Approximately 20°C (68°F) (Reference data)
CAUTION:
If inspection was carried out with cold engine, make sure
values with fully warmed up engine are still within specifi-
cations.

NOTE:
The figure shows an example of widely use engine stand that
can hold mating surface of transmission with drive plate and rear
plate removed.
CAUTION:
Before removing the hanging chains, make sure the engine
stand is stable and there is no risk of overturning.
4. Drain engine oil. Refer to LU-26, "
Changing Engine Oil" .
5. Drain engine coolant from inside engine by removing water
drain plugs “B” as shown in the figure.
6. Remove the following parts and related parts (The parts listed in step 3 are not included here.)

Oil pan and oil strainer; Refer to EM-181, "OIL PAN AND OIL STRAINER" .

Crankshaft pulley, front cover and timing chain; Refer to EM-196, "TIMING CHAIN" .

Camshaft; Refer to EM-208, "CAMSHAFT" .

Cylinder head; Refer to EM-224, "CYLINDER HEAD" .
7. Remove knock sensor.
CAUTION:
Carefully handle sensor, avoiding shocks.
8. Remove piston and connecting rod assembly as follows:

Before removing piston and connecting rod assembly, check the connecting rod side clearance. Refer
to EM-256, "
CONNECTING ROD SIDE CLEARANCE" .
a. Position crankshaft pin corresponding to connecting rod to be removed onto the bottom dead center.
b. Remove connecting rod cap.
c. Using hammer handle or similar tool, push the piston and con-
necting rod assembly out to the cylinder head side.
9. Remove connecting rod bearings from connecting rod and connecting rod cap.
CAUTION:
Identify installation positions, and store them without mixing them up.

Automatically turns on/off the parking lamps and the headlamps in accordance with ambient light.
Timing for when the lamps turn on/off can be selected using four modes.
OUTLINE
The auto light control system has an optical sensor inside it that detects outside brightness.
When the lighting switch is in “AUTO” position, it automatically turns on/off the parking lamps and the head-
lamps in accordance with the ambient light. Sensitivity can be adjusted in four steps. For the details of the set-
ting, refer to LT- 6 2 , "
SETTING CHANGE FUNCTIONS" .
Optical sensor, power is supplied

from BCM (body control module) terminal 17

to optical sensor terminal 1.
Optical sensor, ground is supplied

from BCM (body control module) terminal 18

to optical sensor terminal 3.

ENGINE OIL LEVEL
NOTE:
Before starting engine, check engine oil level. If engine is already started, stop it and allow 10 minutes before
checking.
1. Put vehicle horizontally.
2. Pull out oil level gauge and wipe it clean.
3. Insert oil level gauge and make sure engine oil level is within the
range shown in the figure.
4. If it is out of range, adjust it.
NOTE:
When checking engine oil level, insert oil level gauge with its tip
aligned with oil level gauge guide on cylinder head. (In figure, air
cleaner case and air duct are removed.)
ENGINE OIL APPEARANCE

Check engine oil for white turbidity or heavy contamination.

If engine oil is milky, it is highly probable that it is contaminated with engine coolant. Repair the broken
parts.
ENGINE OIL LEAKAGE
Check for engine oil leakage around the following areas:

Oil pan

Oil pan drain plug

Oil pressure switch

Oil filter

Oil cooler

Water pump cover

Chain tensioner cover

Intake valve timing control cover and intake valve timing control solenoid valve

Mating surface between cylinder block and cylinder head

Mating surface between cylinder head and rocker cover

Mating surface between front timing chain case and rear timing chain case

Mating surface between rear timing chain case and cylinder block and cylinder head

Crankshaft oil seal (front and rear)

CAUTION:
Before installation, apply new engine oil to the parts as instructed in the figure.
REMOVAL
1. Remove oil pan (lower and upper) and oil strainer. Refer to EM-30, "OIL PAN AND OIL STRAINER" .
2. Remove front timing chain case and timing chain (primary). Refer to EM-63, "
TIMING CHAIN" .
3. Remove oil pump assembly.
INSTALLATION
Note to the following, and install in the reverse order of removal.

When installing, align crankshaft flat faces with oil pump inner rotor flat faces.
INSPECTION AFTER INSTALLATION
1. After warming up engine, check for engine oil leakage.
2. Check the engine oil level and add engine oil. Refer to LU-7, "
ENGINE OIL" .
