DRIVING YOUR HYUNDAI 2- 9
SC130A1-E OVERDRIVE SWITCH
The overdrive switch prevents the transaxle upshifting higher than third gear when the switch is turned "OFF". The transaxle will start from rest in first gear and upshift to second and third gear depending upon the roadspeed and throttle opening but will not upshift to fourth gear. When the overdrive switch is turned "ON", the transaxle will start from rest in first gear and will upshift, depending upon roadspeed and throttle opening to second, third and fourth gear. Therefore, when the overdrive switch is turned "OFF", the transaxle performs as a three speed unit and the over- drive warning light located in the instrument cluster will be illuminated. When the overdrive switch is turned "ON", the transaxle functions as a fully automatic four speed unit with the maximum fuel economy potential of the ve- hicle being realized.
o Do not hold the vehicle on the upgrade
with the accelerator pedal. This can causethe transmission to overheat. Always use the brake pedal or parking brake.
SC140A1-E
EFFECTIVE BRAKING Braking system performance and friction ma- terial life are greatly affected by the driving style adopted. The following suggestions are made to assist in achieving the best results from the braking system.
o Anticipate the road and conditions ahead in order that heavy braking may be avoided.
o When descending long gradients, use the engine to assist in retarding the vehicle to minimize the possibility of brake fade oc- curring.
o When trailer towing, ensure that the trailer brakes function correctly and use enginebraking to assist the vehicle braking system.
o Use only genuine Hyundai replacement brake pads and shoes to ensure consis-tent friction characteristics and wear rates.
o After driving through deep water (e.g. fording), the brakes may become wet andperformance reduced. Always check brake efficiency after emerging from the water and dry the brakes by lightly depressing the brake pedal several times whilst driv- ing slowly.
o Apply the parking brake only when the vehicle is at rest.
o Since the power assistance provided by the brake servo is derived from the engine, coasting with the engine turned off or tow- ing of the vehicle with the engine turned off will result in greatly increased pedal pres- sures being required to stop the vehicle. SC140B1-E
ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM (Not all models)
The Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) is de- signed to prevent wheel lock-up during sud- den braking or on hazardous road surfaces. The ABS control module monitors the wheel speed and controls the pressure applied to each brake. Thus, in emergency situations or on slick roads, ABS will increase vehicle con- trol during braking. NOTE: During ABS operation, a slight pulsation may be felt in the brake pedal when the brakes are applied. Also, a noise may be heard in the engine compartment whilst braking. These conditions are normal and indicate that the anti-lock brake system is functioning properly. WARNING: ABS will not prevent accidents due to im-proper or dangerous driving maneuvers. Even though vehicle control is improved during emergency braking, always maintain a safe distance between you and objects ahead. Vehicle speeds should always be reduced during extreme road conditions.

SD050A2-E SPARE WHEEL (Not all models) The spare wheel is stored under the luggage compartment floor and is accessed from within the luggage compartment by lifting the carpet and the floor panel. To remove the spare wheel, unscrew the retainer, rotating this in an anti clockwise direction and lift out the wheel. To replace the wheel, screw the retainer by hand until tight having located the wheel in the luggage com- partment floor well. The inflation pressure of the spare wheel should be checked at least monthly and whenever the wheel is fitted to the vehicle. Spare Tyre Pressure
CAUTION:
o Do not use snow chains with your
temporary spare tyre.
o Do not use more than one temporary
spare tyre at a time. SD060A1-E
IN THE EVENT OF A PUNCTURE If a puncture occurs whilst driving the vehicle:
1. Bring the car to rest as soon as it is safe to do so and with the minimum amount of braking required which will assist in main- taining the maximum amount of control. The vehicle should be parked wherever possible upon firm level ground to facilitate wheel changing.
2. If the vehicle is creating a hazard and the road conditions do not permit the wheel tobe changed safely, assistance should be sought.
3. Passengers must not be allowed to remain inside the vehicle during wheel changing. If a puncture occurs whilst the vehicle is on a motorway, the passengers should take refuge on the motorway embankment to avoid the possibility of injury occurring should the vehicle be struck by other motorway traffic.
4. Wheel changing should be performed ac- cording to the following instructions.

INDIVIDUAL CIRCUIT FUSES
The fuse box containing the individual circuit
fuses will be found in the backside of multi box located in the right side of driver. The multi boxis removed by pulling lightly and then releasingthe lid. A fuse rating grid will be found on thereverse side of the cover. In the event of fusefailure, the fuse should be replaced with one ofequivalent rating. A fuse removal tool is pro-vided within the fuse box to facilitate replace-ment.
In the event of a replacement fuse failing shortly
after installation a malfunction within the circuitprotected by that fuse is indicated. The circuitshould be checked by a Hyundai dealer at thefirst available opportunity.

The fusible link prevents damage to the wiring harness in the event of an electrical systemmalfunction. Failure of a fusiblelink is indicativeof a serious overload condition having occurredand therefore the electrical system should bechecked by a Hyundai dealer before a replace-ment link is fitted. WARNING: Under no circumstances should a fusible link be replaced with anything other than anew link of the same rating. The use ofhigher rated links or other means of con-necting the circuit will create a potential firehazard.

EMISSION CONTROL SYSTEM
7-2
It is of the utmost importance that the following information is read and understood by thevehicle operator in order to prevent operationalproblems arising from damage to the catalyst.Damage to the catalyst will result if contamina-tion occurs through the use of leaded fuel.Whilst the vehicle is fitted with a reduced diam-eter filler neck to prevent charging of the fueltank with a leaded fuel pump nozzle, it ispossible that the use of funnels or jerry cans willpermit leaded fuel to be introduced into the fueltank. The catalyst is intolerant of unburnt fuel andtherefore if an engine misfire condition exists, damage to the catalyst will occur. It is impera-tive that if a misfire condition develops, thevehicle is immediately presented to a Hyundaidealer for rectification. Similarly, the practice ofcertain ignition system diagnosis procedureswhich involve inducing a misfire (cylinder powerbalance tests for example) may result in cata-lyst damage. For these reasons, it is advisable that theexhaust gas emission be tested at each routineservice with a gas analyzer having a Hydrocar-bon measuring facility to ensure continuedreliability of the catalyst.Push or tow starting of the vehicle is to beavoided since unburnt fuel may be enter thecatalyst and result in damage. (Note, it isimpossible to push or tow start a Hyundaimodel equipped with fuel injection since thefuel pump safety interlock will prevent the pumpfrom operating under these conditions).
Operation of the catalyst involves extremelyhigh temperatures being attained within thecatalytic convertor, and although the convertoris fitted with heat shields, it is important that thevehicle is not parked over combustible or vola-tile material which may result in fire.If the above precautions are not adhered to andthe catalyst becomes inoperative, the resultantincrease in core temperature will result in a"melt down" where the catalyst core will meltand subsequently may block the exhaust sys-tem.Due to the fragile nature of the catalyst ele-ment, it is important that damage does notoccur when the vehicle is raised by means of agarage jack. Care must also be exercised toavoid driving over road hazards or debris whichmay cause damage to the catalyst element. H020D01S-GAT ; For a diesel engineAll Hyundai vehicles are equipped with oxida- tion type catalytic converter to reduce the car-bon monoxide, hydrocarbons and particulatecontained in the exhaust gas.
H020C01S-GAT EGR SYSTEM ; For a diesel engine This system helps control oxides of nitrogen by recirculating a part of the exhaust gas into theengine.
