2003 VOLVO XC70
WARNING!
l Bumper-attached trailer hitches must not be used on Volvo's, nor should \
safety chains be attached
to the bumper.
l Trailer hitches attaching to the vehicle rear axle must not be used.
l Never connect a trailer's hydraulic brake system directly to the vehicle\
brake system, nor a trailer's
lighting system directly to the vehicle lighting system. Consult your ne\
arest authorized Volvo retailer
for correct installation.
l When towing a trailer, the trailer's safety wire must be correctly faste\
ned to the hole or hook
provided in the trailer hitch on the car. The safety wire should never b\
e fastened to or wound around
the drawbar ball.
NOTE:
l When parking the car with a trailer on a hill, apply the parking brake before putting the gear selector
in (P)ark. When starting on a hill, put the gear selector in (D)rive\
before releasing the parking brake.
l If you use the manual (Geartronic) shift positions while towing a trai\
ler, make sure the gear you select
does not put too much strain on the engine (using too high a gear).
l The drawbar assembly/trailer hitch may be certified for trailers that ar\
e heavier than the car is
designed to tow. Please adhere to Volvo's recommended trailer weights.
* When driving for prolonged periods at temperatures above 86° F (30\
° C), the maximum recommended
weight is 2000 lbs (900 kg).

l Remove the connector (2).
l Loosen the retaining spring (3) by first moving it to the right and th\
en moving it down, out of the way.
l Pull out the defective bulb. Note the position of the guide lug on the b\
ase of the bulb (4).
Installing a new bulb
To install a new low beam bulb (H7):
l Insert the new bulb, without touching the glass, with the guide lug upwa\

l Move the retaining spring up and push it slightly to the left until it s\
eats properly (2).
l Press the connector into place on the bulb (3).
l Reinstall the plastic cover and turn it clockwise until it is correctly \
in place (4). "TOP" must be
upward.
NOTE: If the vertical aim of your headlights needs to be adjusted for any reas\

for extended periods), this should be done by an authorized Volvo retai\
ler.

Volvo Cars recommends Castrol.
Depending on your driving habits, premium or synthetic oils may provide \
superior fuel economy and
engine protection. Consult your Volvo retailer for recommendations on pr\
emium or synthetic oils.
Oil additives must not be used.
NOTE: Synthetic oil is not used when the oil is changed at the normal maintena\
nce services. This oil is
only used at customer request, at additional charge. Please consult your\
Volvo retailer.
Oil viscosity (stable ambient temperatures)
Operation in temperate climates
Incorrect viscosity oil can shorten engine life. Under normal use when t\
emperatures do not exceed 86 °F
(30°C), SAE 5W/30 will provide good fuel economy and engine protect\
ion. See the viscosity chart
below.
Operation in hot climates
When temperatures exceed 86 °F (30°C) in your area, Volvo recomm\
ends, for the protection of your
engine, that you use a heavier weight oil, such as SAE 10W/30. See the v\
iscosity chart below.
Extreme engine operation
Synthetic oils meeting SAE 10W/30 and complying with oil quality require\
ments are recommended for
driving in areas of sustained temperature extremes (hot or cold), when\
towing a trailer over long
distances, and for prolonged driving in mountainous areas.
Changing oil and oil filter
Oil and oil filter changes should be made at 7,500 mile (12,000 km) in\
tervals.
