INTRODUCTION REPAIR INSTRUCTION
AVENSIS REPAIR MANUAL (RM1018E)
NOTICE:
Confirm that the VSC warning light blinks.
VSC system will be reset when the engine is re-
started.
Fasten the vehicle with lock chains.
(b) NOTICES OF RELATED OPERATIONS TO VSC (1) Do not carry out unnecessary installation and re-
moval as it might disorder the adjustment of related
parts to VSC.
(2) Be sure to carry out the preparation for operation and the confirmation of operation completion in ac-
cordance with the instruction of the text and when
the related operations to VSC are performed.
10. FOR VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH CATALYTIC CONVERTER
CAUTION:
If a large amount of unburned gasoline flows into the converter, it may cause overheating and is a
fire hazard. To prevent this, observe the following precautions.
(a) Use only unleaded gasoline.
(b) Avoid prolonged idling. Avoid idling the engine for more than 20 minutes.
(c) Avoid a spark jump test. (1) Perform a spark jump test only when absolutely necessary. Perform this test as rapidly as pos-sible.
(2) While testing, never race the engine.
(d) Avoid a prolonged engine compression measurement. Engine compression measurements must be performed as rapidly as possible\
.
(e) Do not run the engine when the fuel tank is nearly empty. This may cause the engine to misfire and create an extra load on the converter.

NOTICE:
Turn the ignition switch OFF for 60 seconds before performing the followi\
ng inspections. 1. INSPECT LIGHTING DURATION OF GLOW INDICA-TOR LIGHT
(a) Turn the ignition switch ON, and measure the lighting duration.
Light lighting duration: Refer to the chart graph
2. INSPECT PRE±HEATING
(a) Turn the ignition switch ON, measure how long it takes to the battery voltage is applied to the glow plugs.

4. INSPECT GLOW PLUGS
(a) Using an ohmmeter, check that there is continuity be-
tween the glow plug terminal and ground.
Standard resistance: Approx. 0.72 at 20 C (68 F)
NOTICE:
Be careful not to damage the glow plug pipes as it
could cause an open circuit or shorten life of the glow
plugs.
Avoid getting oil and gasoline on the glow plug when
cleaning.
Wipe up any oil on the terminal and Bakelite washer
with a dry cloth if they are stained with oil during in-
spection.
Be careful not to apply more than 11 V to the glow plug
as it could cause an open circuit.

PRECAUTION
1. DO NOT HANDLE REFRIGERANT IN AN ENCLOSED
AREA OR NEAR AN OPEN FLAME
2. ALWAYS WEAR EYE PROTECTION
3. BE CAREFUL NOT TO GET LIQUID REFRIGERANT IN YOUR EYES OR ON YOUR SKIN
If liquid refrigerant gets in your eyes or on your skin.
(a) Wash the area with lots of cold water.
CAUTION:
Do not rub your eyes or skin.
(b) Apply clean petroleum jelly to the skin.
(c) Go immediately to a hospital or see a physician for profes- sional treatment.
4. NEVER HEAT CONTAINER OR EXPOSE IT TO NAKED
FLAME
5. BE CAREFUL NOT TO DROP CONTAINER AND NOT TO APPLY PHYSICAL SHOCKS TO IT
6. DO NOT OPERATE COMPRESSOR WITHOUT ENOUGH REFRIGERANT IN REFRIGERANT SYSTEM
If there is not enough refrigerant in the refrigerant system, oil lu-
brication will be insufficient and compressor may burnout may
occur, so take care to avoid this, necessary care should be tak-
en.
7. DO NOT OPEN HIGH PRESSURE MANIFOLD VALVE WHILE COMPRESSOR IS OPERATING
Open and close the only low pressure valve. If the high pressure
valves are opened, refrigerant flows in the reverse direction and
cause the charging cylinder to rupture.
8. BE CAREFUL NOT TO OVERCHARGE SYSTEM WITH REFRIGERANT
If refrigerant is overcharged, it causes problems such as insuffi-
cient cooling, poor fuel economy, engine overheating, etc.

ON±VEHICLE INSPECTION
NOTICE:
If the glow plug breaks, the ECU detects the breakage and stops the auto\
matic operation, so
the burner heater does not activate. (For other failures, similarly act\
ivated.)
The cause of failures (such as voltage malfunction, overheating malfunctio\
n, short±circuit or
breakage of functional components, etc.) and repair methods are shown by connecting the DTC
tester and reading the DTC.
1. DIAGNOSTICS FUNCTION
(a) Connect the DTC tester between the connector A (Vehicle harness) of DTC check harness and con- nector B (Power heater harness).
(b) Start the engine.
(c) Pressing the DTC calling button displays a 3±digit number DTC.
