Moving Off With the engine running, to move
off from position P:
it is essential to press the
brake pedal to exit position P,
select function R, D or M,
then gradually release thepressure on the brake pedal;
the vehicle will move off
immediately.
You can also move off fromposition N:
release the handbrake, with
your foot on the brake,
select function R, D or M,
then gradually release thepressure on the brake pedal;
the vehicle will move off
immediately.
When the engine is idlingwith the brakes notapplied, if function R, D
or Mis selected, the vehi-

children unsupervised inside the vehicle, with theengine running.

Recommended lubricants The oils which appear in the table opposite are suitable for most purposes.
The diagram opposite states theoptimum range of viscosity depend-ing on the temperatures at which theoils are to be used. It is also possible to use "superior quality" synthetic oils. In the absence of semi-synthetic or
synthetic oils, oils of ACEA A1/A2
and API SH/SJ/SL quality (for petrol
engines), or ACEA B1/B2 and APICD/CF quality (for diesel engines)may be used by following the"Arduous Conditions" servicingschedule, which specifies shorterintervals. Do not hesitate to ask for advice
from a PEUGEOT dealer to maintaindriving pleasure and to minimise themaintenance cost of your vehicle. For countries outside Europe, please
contact a local PEUGEOT dealer.

Automatic gearbox temperature or fault warning light This comes on for a few seconds when the ignition is switched on. Illumination or flashing of this warning light while the engine is running
and the vehicle is moving indicates an automatic gearbox fault or an excessive automatic gearbox temperature.
Stop immediately.Allow the engine to run at idle (lever in position Nor P) until the warning light
switches off.
Contact a PEUGEOT dealer as soon as possible.
Coolant temperature gauge When the needle is in zone A, the
temperature is correct. When the needle is in zone B, the
temperature is too high.
Stop immediately.
Warning: allow the engine to cool
before topping up.The cooling circuit is pressurised.
To avoid any risk of scalding, unscrew the cap by two turns toallow the pressure to drop. When the pressure has dropped, remove the cap and top up the level.

"PORSCHE TIPTRONIC SYSTEM" AUTOMATIC GEARBOX The four speed automaticgearbox offers a choice between the comfort of inte-
gral automatic operation , enhanced by a snowprogramme, or the pleasure of
manual gear changing .
Gear selection gate Move the lever in the gate to select a function. Once the function is selected, the corresponding indicator light appears on
the instrument panel display.

Automatic operation Automatic changing of the four
gears :
select function Din the gate.
The gearbox always selects the most suitable gear according to the follow-ing parameters:
Ð the style of driving,
Ð the road profile,
Ð the vehicle load. The gearbox is then operating in auto-adaptive mode, without anyaction on your part.
WARNING Never select function Nwhen the
vehicle is moving. Never select functions Por Runless
the vehicle is stationary.Never change between functions to optimise braking on a slippery surface. Notes For immediate maximum accelera-
tion without touching the gear lever, press the accelerator pedal down as
far as it will go (kick down). The gear-box will automatically change downor maintain the gear selected untilmaximum engine speed is reached. When braking, the gearbox will auto- matically change down in order to
provide efficient engine braking. If you take your foot off the accelera-
tor suddenly, the gearbox will notchange to a higher gear for reasons
of safety.
Snow programme In addition to the auto-adaptive pro- gramme, there is a special programme. The programme is displayed on the instrument panel screen. This programme improves starting
and drive when traction is poor. Press button Wonce the vehicle
has been started and function D
selected.
The gearbox adapts to driving on slippery roads. Note: you can return to the auto-
adaptive programme at any time. Press button Wagain to switch
off the programme you are in. Manual operation Manual changing of the
four gears:
select function Min the gate,
push the lever to the +sign to
change to a higher gear,
pull the lever to the Ðsign to
change to a lower gear.
You can change from position D
(driving in automatic mode) to posi- tion M(driving in manual mode) at
any time. Note It is only possible to change from one gear to another if the vehicle speedand engine speed permit. If they donot, the vehicle will operate tem-porarily in automatic mode. When the vehicle is stationary or
moving very slowly, the gearboxautomatically selects gear M1.
Programme W(snow) does not oper-
ate in manual mode.

When parking on a slope, direct your wheelstowards the pavementand apply the handbrake.
Always engage first gear, as aprecaution. Only apply the handbrake when
the vehicle is stationary.
Operating abnormality Any operating abnormality is indicat- ed by flashing of the Snow warninglight on the instrument panel. In this situation the gearbox operates in downgrade mode (locked in 3rd
gear). You may feel a substantialknock when changing from Pto R
and from Nto R(this will not cause
any damage to the gearbox). Do not exceed 60 mph (100 km/h), keeping within the limit of localspeed restrictions.
Contact a PEUGEOT dealer as soon as possible. MANUAL GEARBOX Reverse*
To change to reverse gear, lift the ring under the gear lever knob andpush the gear lever to the left then tothe front. Reverse gear can only be engaged when the vehicle is stationary withthe engine idling. HANDBRAKE Applying When parking, pull the handbrake to immobilise your vehicle. Releasing Pull the handle and press the button to release the handbrake.

ABS ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM
The ABS with Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBFD) increases thestability and manoeuvrability of yourvehicle, particularly on poor or slip-pery road surfaces. Note: when changing wheels (tyres
and rims), make sure that these are approved. The anti-lock braking system comes into operation automatically whenthere is a risk of wheel lock.
* According to engine. Lighting of this warning light indicates that the handbrakeis still applied or has not
been released correctly.
