o Never take the vehicle out of gear and coast
down a hill. This is extremely hazardous. Always leave the vehicle in gear.
o Don't "ride" the brakes. This can cause them to overheat and malfunction. Instead, when you are driving down a long hill, slowdown and shift to a lower gear. When you dothis, engine braking will help slow the car.
o Slow down before shifting to a lower gear. This will help avoid over-running the engine, which can cause damage.
o Slow down when you encounter cross winds. This gives you much better control of yourcar.
o Be sure the vehicle is completely stopped before you attempt to shift into reverse. Thetransmission can be damaged if you do not.To shift into reverse, depress the clutch, move the shift lever to neutral, wait threeseconds, then shift to the reverse position.
o Exercise extreme caution when driving on a slippery surface. Be especially careful whenbraking, accelerating or shifting gears. On a slippery surface, an abrupt change in engine speed can cause the drive wheels tolose traction and the vehicle to go out ofcontrol.

To dry the brakes, apply thebrakes lightly until the braking action returnsto normal, taking care to keep the vehicleunder control at all times. If the brakingaction does not return to normal, stop assoon as it is safe to do so and call yourHyundai dealer for assistance.
o Don’t coast down hills with the vehicle out of gear. This may be extremely hazardous. Keep the vehicle in gear at all times, use the brakes to slow down, then shift to a lowergear so that engine braking will help youmaintain a safe speed.
o Don’t "ride" the brake pedal. Resting your foot on the brake pedal while driving can bedangerous because it can result in the brakesoverheating and losing their effectiveness. Italso increases the wear of the brake compo-nents.
o If a tire goes flat while you are driving, apply the brakes gently and keep the vehicle point-ed straight ahead while you slow down. When you are moving slowly enough for it tobe safe to do so, pull off the road and stopin a safe place.

transmission, don’t let your vehicle creepforward. To avoid creeping forward, keep your foot on the brake pedal when the vehicle isstopped.
o Use caution when parking on a hill. Engage the parking brake and place the gear selec-tor lever in "P"(automatic transmission) or infirst or reverse gear (manual transmission). If your vehicle is facing downhill, turn thefront wheels away from the curb to helpkeep the vehicle from rolling. If there is nocurb or if it is required by other conditions tokeep the vehicle from rolling, block thewheels.
o Under some conditions your parking brake can freeze in the engaged position. This ismost likely to happen when there is anaccumulation of snow or ice around or nearthe rear brakes or if the brakes are wet. ifthere is a risk that the parking brake mayfreeze, apply it only temporarily while youput the gear selector lever in "P" (automatic)or in first or reverse gear (manual transmis-sion) and block the rear wheels so thevehicle cannot roll. Then release the parkingbrake.

(If installed) The Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) is designed
to prevent wheel lock-up during sudden braking or on hazardous road surfaces. A computer monitors the wheel speed and controls the pressure applied to each brake. Thus, in emer-gency situations or on slick roads, your ABSwill increase vehicle control during braking.

All the parts of the brake system are critical to safety. Have the vehicle serviced by an autho-rized HYUNDAI dealer at regular intervals ac-cording to the service standards.
(1) The service brake is divided into two brake circuits so that when one brake circuit fails, the other is available to stop the vehicle. Ifthis occurs, however, the brake pedal mustbe depressed further than usual; stop driv-ing as soon as possible and have the brakesystem serviced at the nearest authorizedHYUNDAI dealer.
(2) Do not place a thick floor mat around the brake pedal; doing so could prevent the fullpedal stroke that would be necessary in anemergency. Make sure that the pedal canbe operated freely at all times.
GT30170A
(3) If the vehicle is equipped with a brake warn-ing lamp, the lamp will light up if the brake fluid level is abnormally low.
(4) If the vehicle is equipped with a brake boost- er, the brake boosting force is lost after thebrake pedal is depressed once or twicewhile the engine is off. If this occurs, thebrake will require greater force than usual. This is especially important when the ve- hicle is being towed.
(5) Check the brake system while driving at a low speed immediately after starting, espe-cially when the brakes are wet, to confirmthat it works normally. A film of water can form on the brake discs or brake drums and prevent normal func-tioning after driving in heavy rain or throughlarge puddles, or after the vehicle is washed. If this occurs, repeatedly tap the brake pedallightly while driving to dry out the brakes. (1) When parking on a hill, fully engage the parking brake and set the gear shift lever to 1st or reverse position. It is recommendedto use chocks for greater safety.
(2) Do not keep the engine running for a long time in a closed or poorly ventilated place.Carbon monoxide gas is odourless and ex-tremely poisonous and dangerous.
(6) It is important to take advantage of the
braking power of the engine by shifting to alower gear while driving on steep downhillroads in order to prevent the brakes fromoverheating.
(7) Periodically confirm that the brake warning lamp functions properly.
(8) With new brake linings, if possible, avoid applying the brakes fully during the first 200km (124 miles) of driving.
