SB210S1-E BRAKE PAD WEAR INDICATORThe front brake disc pads are fitted with an audible wear indicator which will cause a highpitched noise to be emitted when the remainingamount of friction lining is below the specifiedvalue. When the wear indicator is heard, thebrake pads should be replaced without delay toavoid damage occurring to the brake discs and asevere reduction in braking efficiency. SB215A1-E FUEL GAUGE The fuel gauge indicates the quantity of fuel remaining in the fuel tank. The traction control indicators change operation according to the ignition switch position andwhether the system is in operation or not.They will illuminate when the ignition key isturned to the "ON" position, but should go outafter three seconds. If the TCS or TCS-OFFindicator stays on, take your car to your autho-rized Hyundai dealer and have the systemchecked. See section 2 for more informationabout the TCS.

SB215B1-E ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE GAUGE engine is hot may cause hot water and steam to be ejected from the radiator resulting inburns and scalding. The radiator cap mustonly be removed when the engine has cooled.Do not add cold water to a hot engine to avoidthe possibility of engine damage. The use ofplain water in the cooling system is not rec-ommended since the aluminium componentsof the cooling system require the use of acorrosion inhibitor found in the recommendedEthylene Glycol type anti freeze solutions.
The engine coolant temperature gauge indicatesthe engine coolant temperature and will, undernormal circumstances, give an indication in the"Normal" or centre portion of the scale. Shouldthe indication move into the upper or "Hot" por-tion of the scale, engine overheating is indicated.Under these circumstances, the vehicle shouldbe brought to rest as soon as is safe to do so andthe engine turned off. Once the engine has cooledsomewhat, the coolant level and the condition ofthe generator/water pump drive belt should bechecked. If the cause of the overheating cannotbe readily established, the assistance of aHyundai dealer should be sought. WARNING: The engine cooling system is pressurizedand removal of the radiator cap when the The tachometer registers the speed of the enginein revolutions per minute (R.P.M.). CAUTION: The maximum safe engine operating speed isindicated by the white zone of the tachometerscale. The engine should not be operatedbeyond the beginning of this zone or seriousengine damage may result.

BEFORE STARTING THE ENGINE
Before you start the engine, you should always:
1. Look around the vehicle to be sure there are no flat tires, puddles of oil or water or other indications of possible trouble.
2. After entering the car, check to be sure the parking brake is engaged.
3. Check that all windows, and lights are clean.
4. Check that the interior and exterior mirrors are clean and in position.
5. Check your seat, seatback and head re- straint to be sure they are in their properpositions.
6. Close all the doors.
7. Fasten your seat belt and be sure that all other occupants have fastened theirs.
8. Turn off all lights and accessories that are not needed.
9. When you turn the ignition switch to "ON' check that all appropriate warning lights are operating and that you have sufficient fuel.
10.Check the operation of warning lights and all bulbs when key is in the "ON" position. o To start the engine, insert the ignition key
and turn it to the "START" position. Releaseit as soon as the engine starts. Do not holdthe key in the "START" position for more that15 seconds.
NOTE: For safety, the engine will not start if the shift lever is not in "P" or "N" Position (AutoT/A).

COMBINATION IGNITION SWITCH AND STEERING LOCK To Start the Engine
o If your Hyundai is equipped with a manual
transaxle, place the shift lever in neutral and depress the clutch pedal fully.
o If your Hyundai has an automatic transaxle, place the shift lever in "P" (park). SC050A2-E
KEY POSITIONS WARNING:
The engine must never be turned off and the key removed from the ignition key cylinderwhilst the vehicle is in motion since thesteering lock will operate and control of thevehicle will be lost. "START"
The engine is started in this position. It willcrank until you release the key. NOTE: Do not hold the key in the "START" position for more than 15 seconds.
"ON" When the key is at the "ON" position, the ignition and all accessories are available for use. If theengine is not running, the key should not be leftat this position since the battery will becomedischarged and damage to the ignition systemmay also result. For information regarding en-gine starting, refer to "STARTING THE EN-GINE". "ACC" When the ignition key is at the "ACC" position, the radio and other accessories may be used. "LOCK" The ignition key may only be inserted or removed at this position.

2- 8 when you are driving down a long hill, slow down and shift to a lower gear. When you dothis, engine braking will help slow the car.
o Slow down before shifting to a lower gear. Otherwise, the lower gear may not be en-gaged.
o Always use the parking brake. Do not de- pend on placing the transaxle in "P" to keepthe car from moving.
o Exercise extreme caution when driving on a slippery surface. Be especially careful whenbraking, accelerating or shifting gears. On aslippery surface, an abrupt change in vehi-cle speed can cause the drive wheels tolose traction and the vehicle to go out ofcontrol.
WARNING:
o Avoid high cornering speeds.
o Do not make quick steering wheel move- ments, such as sharp lane changes or fast, sharp turns.
o Always wear your seat belts. In a collision crash, un unbelted personis significantly more likely to die than aperson wearing a seatbelt.
o The risk of rollover is greatly increased if you lose control of your vehicle at high-way speeds.
o Loss of control often occurs if two or more wheels drop off the roadway andthe driver oversteers to reenter the road-way. o In the event your vehicle leaves the road-
way, do not steer sharply. Instead, slowdown before pulling back into the travellanes.
o Never exceed posted speed limits. SC140A1-E EFFECTIVE BRAKING Braking system performance and friction mate- rial life are greatly affected by the driving styleadopted. The following suggestions are made toassist in achieving the best results from thebraking system.
o Anticipate the road and conditions ahead in order that heavy braking may be avoided.
o When descending long gradients, use the engine to assist in retarding the vehicle to minimize the possibility of brake fade occur-ring.
o When trailer towing, ensure that the trailer brakes function correctly and use enginebraking to assist the vehicle braking system.
o Use only genuine Hyundai replacement brake pads and shoes to ensure consistentfriction characteristics and wear rates.
o After driving through deep water (e.g. fording), the brakes may become wet andperformance reduced. Always check brakeefficiency after emerging from the water anddry the brakes by lightly depressing thebrake pedal several times whilst driving slow-ly.

CAUTION:
o Shift into "R" and "P" position only when the vehicle has completely stopped.
o Do not accelerate the engine in reverse or any of the forward positions with the brakes applied.
o Always apply the footbrake when shift- ing from "P" or "N", to "R", "D"position.
o Do not use the "P" (Park) position in place of the parking brake. Always setthe parking brake, shift the transaxle into"P" (Park) position and turn off the igni-tion when you leave the vehicle, evenmomentarily. Never leave the vehicleunattended while the engine is running.
o Check the automatic transaxle fluid level regularly, and add fluid as necessary.

Good Driving Practices
o Never move the gear selector lever from "P" or "N" to any other position with the acceler- ator pedal depressed.
o Never move the gear selector lever into "P" when the vehicle is in motion.
o Be sure the car is completely stopped be- fore you attempt to shift into "R".
o Never take the car out of gear and coast down a hill. This may be extremely hazard-ous. Always leave the car in gear whenmoving.
o Do not "ride" the brakes. This can cause them to overheat and malfunction. Instead,

heat, which reduces their effectiveness and may lead to more serious consequences.
o Take care of your tires. Keep them inflated to the recommended pressure. Incorrect infla-tion, either too much or too little, results inunnecessary tire wear. Check the tire pres-sures at least once a month.
o Be sure that the wheels are aligned cor- rectly. Improper alignment can result fromhitting curbs or driving too fast over irregularsurfaces. Poor alignment causes faster tirewear and may also result in other problemsas well as greater fuel consumption.
o Keep your car in good condition. For better fuel economy and reduced maintenancecosts, maintain your car in accordance withthe maintenance schedule in Section 5. Ifyou drive your car in severe conditions,more frequent maintenance is required (seeSection 5 for details).
o Keep your car clean. For maximum service, your car should be kept clean and free ofcorrosive materials. It is especially impor-tant that mud, dirt, ice, etc. not be allowed toaccumulate on the underside of the car. Thisextra weight can result in increased fuelconsumption and also contribute to corro-sion.
o Travel lightly. Don't carry unnecessary weight in your car. Weight is an enemy of good fueleconomy.
o Don't let the engine idle longer than neces- sary. If you are waiting (and not in traffic),turn off your engine and restart only whenyou're ready to go. o Remember, your car does not require ex-
tended warm-up. As soon as the engine isrunning smoothly, you can drive away. Invery cold weather, however, give your en-gine a slightly longer warm-up period.
o Don't "lug" or "over-rev" the engine. Lugging is driving too slowly in too high a gearresulting in the engine bucking. If this hap-pens to you, shift to a lower gear. Over-revving is racing the engine beyond its safe limit. This can be avoided by shifting atthe recommended speeds.
o Use your air conditioning sparingly. The air conditioning system is operated by the en-gine power so your fuel economy is reducedwhen you use it.

SMOOTH CORNERING
Avoid braking or gear changing in corners,
especially when roads are wet. Ideally, cornersshould always be taken under gentle accelera-tion. If you follow these suggestions, tire wearwill be held to a minimum.

WINTER MOTORING The onset of winter conditions subject motor
vehicles to greater operating demands. There-fore, the following suggestions will assist inmaintaining peak performance and reliabilityduring these periods: ZC170B1-E
Electrical System
Winter conditions impose severe demands uponvehicle electrical systems, particularly the charg-ing circuit. The battery condition and perfor-mance along with the alternator performanceand drive belt condition should be checked priorto the onset of winter. ZC170C1-E
Anti-freeze/Corrosion inhibitor The cooling system must always contain an Ethylene-Glycol based anti-freeze solution. Thesystem is filled during manufacture with solu-tion of the correct strength which should bechecked before the onset of winter and adjust- ed or changed as required. NOTE: The anti-freeze solution contains a corro- sion inhibitor to prevent degradation of thealuminum castings contained within theengine. Therefore, never, drain the systemand refill with water only. In addition, anti-freeze solution must ALWAYS be used in vehicles fitted with air conditioning,to prevent the heater matrix from freezing andsubsequently bursting with the refrigeration sys-tem in use.

IN CASE OF EMERGENCY
3-2 4. Check to see if the water pump drive belt is
missing. If it is not missing, check to see that it is tight. If the drive belt seems to be satisfac-tory, check for coolant leaking from the radia-tor, hoses or under the car. (If the air condi-tioning had been in use, it is normal for coldwater to be draining from it).
WARNING:Whilst the engine is running, keep hands andclothing away from moving parts such as thefan and drive belts to prevent injury.
5. If the water pump drive belt is broken or coolant is leaking out, stop the engine imme- diately and call the nearest Hyundai dealerfor assistance.
WARNING:Do not remove the radiator cap when theengine is hot since steam and boiling watermay be ejected from the radiator resulting inburns or scalding.
6. If the cause of the overheating cannot be found, wait until the engine temperature has returned to normal. Then, if coolant has beenlost, carefully remove the radiator cap andadd water to bring the fluid level in the reser-voir up to the base of the radiator fill opening.Fill the coolant expansion tank to the halfwaymark.
WARNING:Motor vehicle batteries contain sulphuric acidand emit hydrogen gas. Protective clothingshould be worn and care exercised to preventthe acid from coming into contact with skin orclothing and the vehicle. Naked lights shouldnot be permitted in the vicinity of the battery.Care should be exercised to prevent sparksoccurring during connection. If acid acciden-tally comes into contact with skin or eyes, theaffected area should immediately be flushedwith copious amounts of water and medicalassistance sought.
1. Ensure that the booster battery is 12 volt type.
If the booster battery is installed in another vehicle, ensure that the two vehicles are nottouching.
2. Turn off all unnecessary electrical equipment in both vehicles.
3. Ensure that the engine of the vehicle provid- ing the jump start is running prior to connec-tion of the jump cables.
4. Connect the red jump cable to the positive (+) terminal of the booster battery and the otherend to the positive (+) terminal of the dis-charged battery.
5. Attach the black jump cable to the negative (-) terminal of the booster battery, and theother end to a ground point within the enginecompartment of the vehicle with the flat bat-tery. Do not connect to the negative batteryterminal of the flat battery since sparks maybe generated with the subsequent risk ofexplosion. 6. Raise the booster vehicle engine speed to
2,000 r.p.m. and start the engine of the vehi-cle with the flat battery.
7. Remove jump cables in the reverse order of installation (black cable first).
CAUTION:If the jump cable is incorrectly installed, dam-age to the vehicle electrical system may oc-cur, in particular the electronic componentssuch as the Fuel Injection system computerand the Automatic Transaxle computer. Thebattery must never be disconnected whilstthe engine is running. SD040A1-E IF THE ENGINE OVERHEATSIf the temperature gauge indicates overheating:
1. Pull off the road and stop as soon as it is safe to do so.
2. Place the gear selector lever in "P" (auto- matic), or neutral (manual transaxle) and set the parking brake. If the air conditioning is on,turn it off.
3. If coolant is running out under the car or steam is coming out from under the bonnetstop the engine. Do not open the bonnet untilthe coolant has stopped running or the steam-ing has stopped. If there is no visible loss ofcoolant and no steam, leave the engine run-ning and check to be sure the engine coolingfan is operating.If the fan is not running, turn the engine off.

SE040B1-E STAIN/SPOT REMOVAL Should tree sap, dead insects or tar prove to be difficult to remove from the paint film, turpentineor a proprietary paint cutting compound may beused. Ensure that the area to be cleaned is notrubbed intensively to prevent breaking throughthe colour coat and exposing the under coat. SE040C1-E POLISHING The exterior paint work should be polished with a proprietary wax polish when water no longercollects in bead form on the paint work. Theinstructions of the product manufacturer shouldbe adhered to. SE040E1-E BUMPER MAINTENANCEThe special material from which the bumpers are manufactured warrants special attention to pre-serve the appearance of the bumpers. Avoidcontact with battery electrolyte or brake fluid andensure that accidental spillages are immediatelyflushed with water.Do not use abrasive cleaning materials whichmay damage the bumpers.
SE040F1-E ACCIDENT REPAIRSIn the event of the body work sustaining damage, the following points should be noted prior torepairs being undertaken.If body panels are replaced or repaired, anticorrosion treatment must be applied to the repairarea. The product used must be compatible withthose used in manufacture. It is recommendedthat repairs are entrusted to a Hyundai dealer toensure that replacement parts used are of thesame high quality as those used in manufactureof the vehicle and that the correct repair methodsand materials will ensure adequate levels ofcorrosion protection and the continued validity ofthe Anti Perforation Warranty. SE050A1-E INTERIOR During the winter period, it is possible that the passenger compartment flooring may becomewet from damp footwear or quantities of snowadhering to footwear. The carpet should not beallowed to remain in this condition since thecarpet may begin to create musty smells and willpromote corrosion of the floor pan in addition tothe carpet and under felt beginning to rot. SE050C1-E INTERIOR VALETINGThe soft trim and carpets should be maintained with the regular use of a vacuum cleaner. Heavysoiling should be removed with a dry cleaningagent recommended for this purpose followingthe instructions of the product manufacturer.Paint thinner, solvents or other such cleaningmaterials should not be used since damage tothe upholstery may result.
SE050D1-E SEAT BELTSSeat belts should be cleaned only with a mild soap solution. Strong detergents, solvens orbleaches may damage the belt webbing andtherefore reduce the effectiveness of the belt.Belts which display signs of fraying, wear of cutshould be replaced. SE050E1-E WINDOWSA proprietary glass cleaner should be used to clean the inside of the windows. However, therear heated windscreen must only be cleanedusing a light horizontal cleaning action. Careshould be exercised to avoid the use of abrasivecleaners or contact with items of jewellery whichmay damage the heating elements.
Avoid subjecting the bumpers to high tempera-tures such as may be encountered in high bakepaint ovens.
