DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE CHART
The inspection procedures are shown in the table below. This table allows efficient and accurate trouble-
shooting using the diagnostic trouble codes displayed in the diagnostic trouble code chart. Proceed with
troubleshooting in accordance with the inspection procedures listed in the diagnostic c\
hart corresponding
to the diagnostic trouble codes displayed. The diagnostic trouble code chart for the Supplemental Restraint
System is shown below as an example.

AVENSIS REPAIR MANUAL (RM1018E)
LIGHTING SYSTEM
PRECAUTION
1. PRECAUTION OF HEADLIGHT BULB REPLACEMENT
(a) When any defects such as deformation, crack, dent, chipping, etc. are identified on the discharge
headlight (especially, on the light control ECU), replace it with a new one.
(b) Even if the operation seems to be normal, the fail±safe function may be defective.
(c) Be careful not to scratch on drop bulbs of the discharge headlamp and halogen bulbs (for headlamp
and fog lamp), as they have pressurized gas inside and can be easily broken.
(d) Touching the HV socket of the discharge headlight with the headlight dimmer switch ON could gener-
ate momentary high voltage of 20,000 V and lead to a serious injury.
(e) Never connect a tester to the high voltage socket of the discharge headlight for measurement, as this
leads to a serious injury because of high voltage.
(f) When performing operation related to the discharge headlight, keep it away from water including rain,
turn off the light control switch, and disconnect the battery terminal and the connector of the light control
ECU in advance to avoid electric shock.
(g) When performing operation related to the discharge headlight, start it after assembling is completed
and never turn the lights on without a bulb installed.
(h) Do not turn the discharge headlight on using another power source except vehicle's.

STEERING COLUMN STEERING SYSTEM

AVENSIS REPAIR MANUAL (RM1018E)
STEERING SYSTEM
PRECAUTION
1. HANDLING PRECAUTIONS ON STEERING SYSTEM
(a) Be careful to replace the parts properly because they could affect the performance of the steering sys-
tem and result in a driving hazard.
2. HANDLING PRECAUTIONS ON SRS AIRBAG SYSTEM
(a) The vehicle is equipped with SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) such as \
the driver airbag and front passenger airbag. Failure to carry out service operation in the correct sequence \
could cause the SRS
to unexpectedly deploy during servicing, possibly leading to a serious acc\
ident. Before servicing (in-
cluding removal or installation of parts, inspection or replacement), be sure \
to read the precautionary
notices in the supplemental restraint system (See page 60±1).
3. HANDLING PRECAUTIONS ON STEERING COLUMN
(a) Do not give an impact to the steering column assy, especially the motor and the torque sensor. If a great impact is given (dropping it to the floor, etc.), replace it with a new one.
(b) When removing the steering column assy, do not pull the harness.
(c) When having replaced the steering column assy and/or the ECU, calibrate the \
zero point of the steer- ing torque sensor.
(d) In the case of disconnecting a connector related to the power steering sys\
tem, turn the ignition switch ON, set the steering wheel in the straight±ahead position and turn th\
e ignition switch OFF before dis-
connecting the connector.
(e) In the case of connecting a connector related to the power steering system, make sure that the ignit\
ion switch is OFF at first. After connecting the connector, set the steering wheel assy in the straight±ahead
position, and then turn the ignition switch ON.
NOTICE:
Never turn on the ignition switch when the steering wheel assy is set in orde\
r than the straight±ahead
position.
(f) If the above operation is not done, the zero point of the steering torque \
sensor is shifted away from the proper position, making difference in the steering effort between right and left. If this happens, per-
form the zero point calibration of the steering torque sensor (See page 05±1042).

(2) Connect the lead to the negative (±) terminal of the
transmitter and install the battery.
(3) Connect the tester positive (+) probe to the (+) bat-
tery (lithium battery) and the tester negative (±)
probe to the lead respectively.
(4) Press one of the transmission switches on the
transmitter for approx. 1 second.
(5) Press the transmission switch on the transmitter
again to check the voltage.
Standard: 2.2 V or higher
HINT:
When the temperature of the battery is low, the inspection can not be made correctly.
When the outcome of the test is less than 2.2 V, conduct the test again after leaving the battery in a
place with a temperature of 18C (64F) for more than 30 minutes.
The automatic power±off function causes the voltage of the battery to be 2.5 V or more (a voltage with
no resistance applied to the battery) when 0.8 seconds have passed after the switch is pressed. There-
fore, make sure to read the voltage just after the switch is pressed.
Because high voltage might be shown once or twice after the battery returns to the specified tempera-
ture, the inspection should be made with the voltage shown after the switch is pressed at least 3 times.
(6) Disconnect the lead.
(7) Set the battery (lithium battery) in the transmitter.
