C055B01B-GAT STARTING AND STOPPING THE ENGINE FOR TURBO CHARGERINTERCOOLER (DIESEL EN-GINE)
(1) Do not race the engine or sudden
accelerate the engine immediately after start it. If the engine is cold, allow the engine to idle for severalseconds before it is driven to en- sure sufficient lubrication of the turbo charger unit.
(2) After high speed or extended driv- ing, requiring a heavy engine load,the engine should be allowed to idleabout 1 minute before turning it off. This idle time will allow the turbo charger to cool prior to shutting theengine off.
!WARNING:
Do not turn the engine off immedi- ately after it has been subjected toa heavy load. Doing so may cause severe damage to the engine or turbo charger unit.
WARNING:
Be sure that the clutch is fully de-pressed when starting a manual transaxle vehicle. Otherwise there is the potential to cause damage tothe vehicle or injury to someone inside or outside the vehicle as a result of the forward or backwardmovement of the vehicle that will occur if the clutch is not depressed when the vehicle is started.
5. Turn the ignition key to the "Start" position and release it when the engine starts.

SC060B1-E FUEL ECONOMY The following suggestions are made to assist in achieving the greatest degreeof fuel economy.
o Maintaining a constant check on
fuel consumption will enable the most economical use pattern and driving style to be adopted.
o Avoid using the vehicle for very short journeys if possible, particu-larly when a cold start is involved.
o Ensure that tyre pressures are main- tained at the correct level.
o Use only the recommended grade of fuel.
o Avoid carrying unnecessary weight,
and if a roof rack is in use, removeit as soon as possible after use.
o Anticipate the road and conditions
ahead to enable adjustments inspeed to be made smoothly. Avoid heavy acceleration and sharp brak- ing.
o Avoid cruising at unnecessary high speeds.

SC130A1-E OVERDRIVE SWITCH
The overdrive switch prevents the transaxle upshifting higher than third gear when the switch is turned "OFF".The transaxle will start from rest in first gear and upshift to second and third gear depending upon the roadspeedand throttle opening but will not upshift to fourth gear. When the overdrive switch is turned "ON", the transaxlewill start from rest in first gear and will upshift, depending upon roadspeed and throttle opening to second, thirdand fourth gear. Therefore, when the overdrive switch is turned "OFF", the transaxle performs as a three speedunit and the overdrive warning light
o When ascending steep gradients
using large throttle openings, thetransaxle may re-peatedly changebetween two adjacent ratios. This is a normal characteristic and may be prevented by cancelling the over-drive facility if the shifting occurs between third and fourth ratios, se- lecting position "2" if the shiftingoccurs between third and second ratios or selecting position "1" if the shifting occurs between first andsecond ratios.
o Never move the selector to or from
the "P" or "N" position with the ac-celerator depressed.
o Ensure that the overdrive switch is
at the "ON" position for maximumeconomy.
o If rapid acceleration is required, fully
depress the accelerator pedal. Inthis condition, the kickdown mecha- nism will be operated and the transaxle will automatically down-shift according to the vehicle speed. o The automatic transaxle may be
used to great effect if the vehiclebecomes stuck in snow or mud byallowing the vehicle to be rocked to and fro. The engine speed should be held at approximately 1,000rpmby means of the accelerator pedal and the selector lever moved be- tween the "D" and "R" positions toinduce a rocking motion.
o Do not depress the accelerator pedal
with the brakes applied and the se-lector at the "R", "D", "2" or "L" position.
o Turn the overdrive switch on for
good fuel economy and smooth driv-ing. But if engine braking is needed in the "D" range or if repeated up-shifting and downshifting between the 3rd and 4th gear is needed when climbing a gentle slope, it is recom-mended that the overdrive switch be turned off. Turn the overdrive switch back on immediately after-ward.

!WARNING:
ABS will not prevent accidents due to improper or dangerous driving maneuvers. Even though vehicle control is improved during emer-gency braking, always maintain a safe distance between you and ob- jects ahead. Vehicle speeds shouldalways be reduced during extreme road conditions. The braking distance for carsequipped with an anti-lock braking system may be longer than for those without it in the following road con- ditions.
o Driving on rough, gravel or snow- covered roads.
o Driving with tyre chains installed.
o Driving on roads where the road surface is pitted or has differentsurface height. These roads should be driven atreduced speeds. The safety featuresof an ABS equipped vehicle should not be tested by high speed driving or cornering. This could endangerthe safety of yourself or others. SC150A1-F DRIVING FOR ECONOMY You can save fuel and get more miles from your car if you follow these sug- gestions:
o Drive smoothly. Accelerate at a
moderate rate. Don't make "jack- rabbit" starts or full-throttle shifts and maintain a steady cruisingspeed. Don't race between stop- lights. Try to adjust your speed to that of the other traffic so you don'thave to change speeds unneces- sarily. Avoid heavy traffic whenever pos-sible. Al-ways maintain a safe dis- tance from other vehicles so you can avoid unnecessary braking. Thisalso reduces brake wear. o Drive at a moderate speed. The
faster you drive, the more fuel yourcar uses. Driving at a moderatespeed, especially on the highway, is one of the most effective ways to reduce fuel consumption.
o Don't "ride" the brake or clutch pedal. This can increase fuel consumptionand also increase wear on thesecomponents. In addition, driving with your foot resting on the brake pedal may cause the brakes to overheat,which reduces their effectiveness and may lead to more serious con- sequences.
o Take care of your tyres. Keep them inflated to the recommended pres-sure. Incorrect infla-tion, either toomuch or too little, results in unnec- essary tyre wear. Check the tyre pres-sures at least once a month.
o Be sure that the wheels are aligned correctly. Improper alignment canresult from hitting curbs or drivingtoo fast over irregular surfaces. Poor alignment causes faster tyre wear and may also result in other prob-lems as well as greater fuel con- sumption.

o The formation of snow or ice built up
inside the wheel arches may inter- fere with the road wheels or steeringmechanism. In such instances, un- usual noises or an increase in steer- ing effort may result. Therefore,ensure that the wheel arches are checked periodically and any accu- mulated snow or ice removed.
o It is advisable to carry emergency equipment including, torch, shovel,tow rope, blankets etc., if a journeyis to be undertaken into areas of severe road conditions.

C190E01L C195F02TB-EAT TOWING ATTACHMENTS It is strongly recommended that only an Hyundai Approved towing attach-ment is used to ensure that the loads placed upon the body structure are correctly distributed. The use of a nonapproved attachment will result in the invalidation of the vehicle warranty. Hyundai towing attachments are de-signed and constructed to ensure maximum towing performance and ease of fitment. A range of accesso-ries including electrical kits are avail- able through the Hyundai dealer net- work. It is of the utmost importance that those areas of the vehicle which aresubjected to greater stress during tow- ing are maintained in accordance with the recommendations given at the endof this book. In addition, the daily oper- ating checks relating to engine oil, transmission oil and tyres must beperformed at each refuelling to ensure maximum reliability and safety.

It is not recommended that the ve- hicle be used for towing until thefirst 1,000 miles of Running In has been completed. All Hyundai MA- TRIX models are suited to towingtrailers and caravans up to the lim- its indicated below. 1. If the vehicle is fitted with manual
transaxle, ensure that the clutch pedal is depressed whilst cranking the engine. If the vehicle is fitted with automatic transaxle, ensurethat the transaxle selector is at the "P" or"N" position.
2. Check the battery terminals and
connections to ensure that theseare clean and also tight.
3. If the ignition warning lights dim
when the engine is cranked and thebattery terminals have been checked, a discharged battery isindicated. SD020C1-F If Engine Turns Over Normally but Does Not Start
SD020A1-E IF THE ENGINE WILL NOT START Seek assistance from the nearest Hyundai dealer with regard to the method of ignition and fuel systemdiagnosis.

CAUTION:
If the engine refuses to start, no attempt should be made to push or tow start the vehicle. Vehicles withautomatic transaxle or fuel injec- tion will not be able to be started in this manner since no drive is trans-mitted through the automatic transaxle whilst the engine is not running, and in the case of fuelinjected derivatives, the fuel pump will not operate under tow start conditions. In addition, if the ve-hicle is equipped with an exhaust catalyst, damage to the catalyst may result if the vehicle is tow started. 4. Do not attempt to push or tow start
the vehicle, refer to "Jump Starting"for information regarding enginestarting when the battery is dis- charged.

AD020D1-AIf Engine Stalls While Driving
1. Reduce your speed gradually, keep-
ing a straight line. Move cautiously off the road to a safe place.
2. Turn on your emergency flashers.
3. Try starting the engine again. If your
vehicle will not start, see "IF THE ENGINE WILL NOT START"!
WARNING:
Motor vehicle batteries contain sulphuric acid and emit hydrogen gas. Protective clothing should be worn and care exercised to preventthe acid from coming into contact with skin or clothing and the ve- hicle. Naked lights should not bepermitted in the vicinity of the bat- tery. Care should be exercised to prevent sparks occurring duringconnection. If acid accidentally comes into contact with skin or eyes, the affected area should im-mediately be flushed with copious amounts of water and medical as- sistance sought. 1. Ensure that the booster battery is
12 volt type. If the booster battery isinstalled in another vehicle, ensurethat the two vehicles are not touch- ing.
2. Turn off all unnecessary electrical equipment in both vehicles.
3. Ensure that the engine of the ve-
hicle providing the jump start is run- ning prior to connection of the jump cables.
4. Connect the red jump cable to the positive (+) terminal of the boosterbattery and the other end to the positive (+) terminal of the dis-charged battery.
5. Attach the black jump cable to the
negative (-) terminal of the boosterbattery, and the other end to a ground point within the engine compart- ment of the vehicle with the flatbattery. Do not connect to the nega- tive battery terminal of the flat bat- tery since sparks may be generatedwith the subsequent risk of explo- sion.
6. Raise the booster vehicle engine speed to 2,000 r.p.m. and start theengine of the vehicle with the flat battery.

3- 4 WHAT TO DO IN AN EMERGENCY
D030A01TB-EAT IF THE ENGINE OVERHEATS If the temperature gauge indicates overheating:
1. Pull off the road and stop as soon as
it is safe to do so.
2. Place the gear selector lever in "P" (automatic), or neutral (manual transaxle) and set the parking brake. If the air conditioning is on, turn it off. 3. If coolant is running out under the
car or steam is coming out fromunder the bonnet stop the engine.Do not open the bonnet until the coolant has stopped running or the steaming has stopped. If there is novisible loss of coolant and no steam, leave the engine running and check to be sure the engine cooling fan isoperating. If the fan is not running, turn the engine off.
4. Check to see if the water pump drive belt is missing. If it is not missing,check to see that it is tight. If thedrive belt seems to be satisfactory, check for coolant leaking from the radiator, hoses or under the car. (Ifthe air conditioning had been in use, it is normal for cold water to be draining from it).
WARNING:
Whilst the engine is running, keephands and clothing away from mov-ing parts such as the fan and drive belts to prevent injury.

7. Remove jump cables in the reverse order of installation (black cable first).
CAUTION:
If the jump cable is incorrectly in- stalled, damage to the vehicle elec-trical system may occur, in particu- lar the electronic components such as the Fuel Injection system com-puter and the Automatic transaxle computer. The battery must never be disconnected whilst the engineis running.

!WARNING (Diesel only):
Never work on injection system with engine running or within 30 sec- onds after shutting off engine. Highpressure pump, rail, injectors and high pressure pipes are subject to high pressure even after the enginestopped. The fuel jet produced by fuel leaks may cause serious in- jury, if it touch the body. Peopleusing pacemakers should not move than 30cm closer to the ECU or wiring harness within the engineroom while engine is running, since the high currents in the Common Rail system produce considerablemagnetic fields.
5. If the water pump drive belt is bro- ken or coolant is leaking out, stop the engine immediately and call thenearest Hyundai dealer for assis- tance.

D040A01TB-EAT TEMPORARY SPARE TYRE (Not all models) The following instructions for the tem- porary spare tyre should be observed:
1. Check inflation pressure as soon as
practical after installing the spare tyre, and adjust to the specifiedpressure. The tyre pressure should be periodically checked and main- tained at the specified pressurewhile the tyre is stored.

6. If the cause of the overheating can-
not be found, wait until the engine temperature has returned to nor- mal. Then, if coolant has been lost, carefully remove the radiator capand add water to bring the fluid level in the reservoir up to the base of the radiator fill opening. Fill the coolantexpansion tank to the halfway mark.
7. Proceed with caution until it is es-
tablished that the engine is operat-ing normally. If the engine over- heats repeatedly, the advice of a Hyundai dealer should be sought. WARNING:
Do not remove the radiator cap whenthe engine is hot since steam and boiling water may be ejected from the radiator resulting in burns orscalding.

2. The spare tyre should only be used temporarily and should be returned to the luggage compartment as soonas the original tyre can be repaired or replaced.
