Previous automatic transaxle have selected each gear shift using mechanically controlled throttle hydraulic pressure,
governor hydraulic pressure and lock-up hydraulic pressure. The electronically controlled transmission, however, electrically
controls the line pressure, throttle pressure, lock-up pressure and accumulator pressure etc. through the solenoid valve. The
electronically controlled transmission is a system which precisely controls gear shift timing and lock-up timing in response to
the vehicle's driving conditions and the engine condition detected by various sensors. It makes smooth driving possible by
shift selection for each gear which is the most appropriate to the driving conditions at that time, and by preventing downing,
squat and gear shift shock when starting off.
1. Gear Shift Operation
During driving the engine warm up condition signal is input from engine coolant temp. sensor to TERMINAL THW of the
engine control module, and the vehicle speed signal is input from the ABS speed sensor to skid control ECU, and are sent to
the engine control module through communication control. At the same time, the throttle valve opening signal is sent from
the throttle position sensor to the TERMINALS VTA1 and VTA2 of the engine control module, as the throttle angle signal.
2. Lock-Up Operation
When the engine control module decides based on each signal that the lock-up condition has been met, the current flows
through TERMINAL DSL of the engine control module to TERMINAL 3 of the electronically controlled transmission solenoid
to GROUND.
3. Stop Light SW Circuit
If the brake pedal is depressed (Stop light SW on) when driving in lock-up condition, a signal is input to TERMINAL STP of
the engine control module. The engine control module operates and cuts the current to the solenoid to release lock-up.
4. Overdrive Circuit
*O/D main SW on
When the O/D main SW is turned on, a signal is input to TERMINAL ODMS of the engine control module and engine
control module operation causes gear shift when the conditions for overdrive are met.
*O/D main SW off
When the O/D main SW is turned off, a signal is input into TERMINAL ODMS of the engine control module, and turns on
the O/D off indicator light. This activates the ECU, and the transmission system is controlled not to shift to overdrive.

Steering Linkage and Boots
With the vehicle stopped, check for excessive freeplay in the steering wheel.
Inspect the linkage for bending and damage and the dust boots for deterioration,
cracks and damage. Replace any damaged parts. A qualified technician should
perform these operations.
Timing Belt
Replace every 90,000 miles. A qualified technician should perform this operation.
Tire Rotation
Tires should be rotated at specified intervals according to the instructions in the
Owner’s Manual. When rotating tires, check for damage and uneven wear.
Replace if necessary.
Transfer Case Oil
Inspect or replace at specified intervals. When performing inspections, check for
signs of leakage. If you discover any leakage, have it repaired by a qualified tech
nician immediately.
Wheel Bearing and Drive Shaft Bushing Grease
Repack the wheel bearings with wheel bearing grease and the drive shaft
bushing with molybdenumdisulfide lithiumbase chassis grease. A qualified
technician should perform these operations.

ADJUSTMENT
1. REMOVE FRONT WHEEL RH
2. REMOVE FRONT FENDER SPLASH SHIELD FRONT RH

9. REMOVE CYLINDER HEAD COVER SUB-ASSY
(a) Remove the bolt and disconnect the engine wire harness
clamp.
(b) Remove the 8 bolts, 2 nuts, cylinder head cover and gas-
ket.
10. SET NO. 1 CYLINDER TO TDC/COMPRESSION
(a) Turn the crankshaft pulley, and align its groove with timing
mark 0 of the timing chain cover.
(b) Check that the timing marks of the camshaft timing gear
and sprocket are aligned with the timing marks of the
bearing cap No. 1 and No. 2 as shown in the illustration.
11. INSPECT VALVE CLEARANCE
HINT:
Inspect and adjust the valve clearance when the engine is cold.
(a) Check only the valve indicated on the left.
(1) Using a feeler gauge, measure the clearance be-
tween the valve lifter and camshaft.
(2) Record valve clearance measurements that are out
of the specified range. These measurements will be
used later to determine the size of the adjustment
shim to be installed.

(b) Turn the crankshaft clockwise 1 revolution (360) and set
the No.4 cylinder to TDC/compression.
(c) Check only the valve indicated on the left.

12. ADJUST VALVE CLEARANCE
NOTICE:
Be sure not to turn the crankshaft without the chain ten-
sioner.
(a) Turn the crankshaft clockwise 1 revolution (360) and set
the No. 1 cylinder to the TDC/compression.
(b) Place paint marks on the timing chain and camshaft tim-
ing gear sprocket.
(c) Remove the 2 bolts and chain tensioner.

(d) Remove the No. 2 camshaft.
(1) Fix the camshaft with a wrench and then loosen the
sprocket bolt.
NOTICE:
Be careful not to damage the valve lifter.
(2) Uniformly loosen and remove the No. 2 camshaft's
10 bearing cap bolts in the sequence shown in the
illustration. Then remove the 5 bearing caps.
(3) Raise the No. 2 camshaft and remove it. Then re-
move the sprocket bolt.
(4) Remove the camshaft timing sprocket and the tim-
ing chain from the No. 2 camshaft.
(5) Remove the camshaft timing sprocket from the tim-
ing chain.
(e) Remove the camshaft.
(1) Uniformly loosen and remove the camshaft's 10
bearing cap bolts in the sequence shown in the il-
lustration. Then remove the 5 bearing caps.
(2) Remove the camshaft.
(f) Tie the timing chain with a string.
NOTICE:
Be careful not to drop anything inside the timing chain cov-
er.
(g) Remove the valve lifters.

(i) Install the camshaft.
(1) Install the timing chain on the camshaft timing gear,
with the paint mark aligned with the timing marks on
the camshaft timing gear.
(2) Examine the front marks and numbers of the 5 bear-
ing caps and install them. Then install the 10 bear-
ing cap bolts. Uniformly tighten the bolts in the se-
quence shown in the illustration.
Torque:
30 NVm (301 kgfVcm, 22 ftVlbf) for bearing cap No. 1
9.0 NVm (92 kgfVcm, 80 in.Vlbf) for bearing cap No. 3
(j) Install the No. 2 camshaft.
(1) Put the No. 2 camshaft on the cylinder head with the
paint mark of the chain aligned with the timing mark
on the camshaft timing sprocket.
(2) Raise the No. 2 camshaft and temporarily tighten
the sprocket bolt.
(3) Examine the front marks and numbers of the 5 bear-
ing caps and install them. Then install the 10 bear-
ing cap bolts. Uniformly tighten the bolts in the se-
quence shown in the illustration.
Torque:
30 NVm (301 kgfVcm, 22 ftVlbf) for bearing cap No. 2
9.0 NVm (92 kgfVcm, 80 in.Vlbf) for bearing cap No. 3
