Dust and small particles of dirt lodging in the
pores, grain and seams can have an abra
sive effect and damage the surface and the
seams. If the vehicle is left standing for a
long time in the sun, cover the upholstery or
use the sun blinds to protect the leather
from direct sunlight and prevent fading or
discoloration.
Depending on the amount of use, clean it
occasionally according to the following
instructions. Never use solvents, wax
polish, shoe cream, spot removers
or similar materials.
For normal cleaning of leather -covered
steering wheels, leather seat upholstery,
etc., slightly moisten a cotton or woollen
cloth with water and wipe over the areas af
fected.
218 More
stubborn dirt can be removed using a
mild soap solution (pure liquid soap: two
tablespoons dissolved in 1 quart of water).
It is very important not to let the wa
ter soak through the leather or pene
trate into the seams. Then wipe off with
a soft, dry cloth.
In addition to this regular cleaning, it is
worth while treating the leather with a suit
able leather -care product. This should be
done about twice a year for uphol stery in
normal use. Apply these products very spar
ingly and follow the manufacturer's direc
tions.
Safety belts
Keep belts clean! Dirty belts may
not retract properly.
For cleaning, use a mild soap and water
solution. Let belts dry thoroughly and away
from direct sunlight.
Do not allow inertia reel safety belts to re
tract before they are completely dry. W
ARNING
• Any thing that might damage
your safety balta could mean that
you and your passengers would
not be adequately protected in an
accident.
• Do not use chemical cleaning
agents, bleach or dyes. They have
corrosive properties which weak
en the webbing.
• When cleaning your safety
belts, inspect them for damage. If
you discover damage. see your
Audi Dealer.
• Safety belt performance de
pends on correct installation.
Never remove belts from the ve
hicle to clean them.

To help avoid injury, before you
check anything under the hood:
• Switch off the engine. Remove
the ignition key.
• Set the parking brake fully.
Move the selector lever toP (Park).
• Always let the engine cool
down. Hot components will burn
skin on contact.
• Never spill fluids on hot engine
components. They can cause a
fire.
• Never touch the radiator fan.
The auxiliary electric fan can
switch on suddenly and injure you.
232 r4
WARNING continued
• If work on the fuel system or the
electrical system is necessary:
- Always disconnect the battery.
Never smoke or work near heat
ers or open flames. Fluids in the
engine compartment could start
a fire.
Keep an approved fire extin
guisher immediately available.
• To avoid electrical shock and
personal injury while the engine is
running or being started, never
touch:
- Ignition cables
- Other components of the high
voltage electronic ignition system. M
WARNING continued
• If you must perform a check or
repair with the engine running:
First, fully apply the parking
brake, move selector lever to
P (Park).
Always use extreme caution to
prevent clothing, jewelry, or
long hair from getting caught in
the radiator fan, V-belts or other
moving parts, or from contact
ing hot parts. Tie back hair be
fore starting, and wear no cloth
ing that will hang or droop into
the engine.

Radiator
fan
The radiator fan is driven by the engine via
the V-belt. The viscous clutch regulates the
speed of the fan according to the tempera
ture of the coolant.
An auxiliary electric radiator fan switches on
and off depending on coolant temperature
and other vehicle operation conditions.
 WARNING
• Always use extreme caution to
prevent clothing. jewelry, or long
hair from getting caught in the en
gine driven radiator fan, V-belt or
other moving parts.
• Never touch the auxiliary elec
tric radiator fan. The fan can
switch on suddenly and injure you.
Always heed all WA RNINGS
on page 232. Power
steering
Yo ur vehicle is equipped with a Servotro
nic power steering. The degree of
power assistance is regulated electronically
according to road speed.
The fluid reservoir is in the engine compart
ment near the windshield washer container.
The correct fluid level in the reserv oir is im
portant for the proper functioning of power
steer ing.
The power steering fluid level is checked
during the scheduled Maintenance ser
vices.
If the electronic regulating system is not
working properly, this is most noticeable
when turning the steering wheel at low
speeds (for example when parking) -more
effort will be required than usual. The fault
should be rectified by an Audi Dealer as
soon as possible. VEH
ICLE CARE
Note
• When the engine is running, never hold
the steering wheel turned all the way to the
right or to the left for longer than 15 sec
onds. The power steering pump will over
heat the hydraulic fluid if you hold the steer
ing wheel all the way turned.
This will damage the power steering
system.
Each time the steering wheel is turned all
the way to the right or left when stopped,
you will hear noises caused by the severe
stress placed on the power steering pump.
At the same time, engine idle speed drops.
• If the power steering system
should fail, or if the engine is not
running (for example, while being
towed). you will still be able to steer
the vehicle, however. more effort
will be required.
• If the power steering system should
have a leak, or is not functioning properly,
contact your authorized Audi Dealer imme
diately.

Spark plugs
Spark plugs are replaced during the Audi
scheduled Maintenance Service.
If you have to replace the spark plugs be
tween the Audi Maintenance services, be
sure to note the following:
• Engine, spark plugs and the ignition sys
tem are matched to each other. To avoid
faulty operation or engine damage, use only
Original Audi spark plugs. It is especially im
portant to note the number of electrodes on
the spark plug and the heat value.
• Since spark plug specifications may
change for technical reasons during a model
year, we recommend that you obtain your
spark plugs from an authorized Audi Dealer,
who has the latest information.
Always heed all WARNINGS
on page 232. Belts
Ribbed V-Belt
The radiator fan, hydraulic pump (power
steering), alternator and air conditioner
compressor are driven by one V-belt.
The installed V-belt conforms to the highest
quality requirements. The V-belt adjusts its
own tension.
Replacing of the V-belt should be
performed by your authorized Audi
Dealer or a qualified workshop.
When replacing a belt, it is not sufficient to
use just any belt of the same size. For safe
and reliable operation, use only Genuine
Audi V-belts specially designed for your ve
hicle. The correct belts can be obta ined at
your authorized Audi Dealer. W
ARNING
To prevent serious personal inju
ries stay well clear of the V-belt,
The radiator fan and the V-belt
driven accessories when the en
gine is running. The V-belt will be
inspected and replaced by your au
thorized Audi Dealer during a
scheduled Maintenance Service.

VEH
ICLE CARE----------------------------------------------------
• For safety reasons, tires should be re
placed in pairs and not individually. The tires
with the deepest tread should always be
mounted on the front wheels.
W ARNING
It is essential to the safe operation
of your vehicle that you use only
rims and tires that have the same
designation. sizes and types as
those with which your vehicle was
originally equipped.
Using tires and/or wheal rims dif
ferent from those which originally
came with your vehicle can reduce
the clearance between the wheels
and the vehicle body. The tires
could then rub against the vehicle
body damaging the tire or the ve
hicle body. or both. and seriously
effect your safety as well as the
safe operation of your vehicle.
256 •
Ve hicles with quattro ® must always
have tires of the same size, construction
and tread type. For details see page 207.
• Never mount used tires if you are not
sure of their previous history.
• Whenever replacing a tubeless tire, al
ways install a new valve stem. Tire repair
should only be performed by a specialist.
• In the interest of maximum safety and
best all-around vehicle handling, always buy
replacement radial tires that have the same
specifications with regard to tire size, de
sign, load carrying capacity, speed rating,
tread pattern, tread depth, etc. This also ap
plies to Audi recommended alternate re
placement tires. Tire

W ARNIN G
Never mix tires of different design
such as steel belted radials with
radial bias belted or bias ply tires
etc. Mixing tire types will adverse
ly affect road holding and can lead
to loss of vehicle control and per
sonal injury.
A knowledge of tire designations makes it
easier to choose the correct tires. Radial ply
tires have the following designations:
e.g. 225 /55 R 17 97 H
225 lire width in mm
55 Heig ht/width ratio in %

Winter tires
The tires for your vehicle were selected for
optimal performance under a variety of driv
ing conditions.
If your Audi is equipped with high perfor
mance tires (identified by code letter V, W
or Z on the tire flank) and you drive frequent
ly on ice or sno w, you should consider the
installation of all season or winter tires. Let
your authorized Audi Dealer advise and as
sist you.
For winter driving, the driveability of your
vehicle can be improved by installing radial
winter tires (M+S) with or without studs1l.
The all season tires with which your ve
hicle may have been equipped at the factory
are perform ance tires advertised by the tire
manufacturer as suitable for all weather use
or with special mud and snow (M+S) capa
bility.
Winter tires, sometimes also called snow
tires, are designed for maximum traction in
mud and snow.
,, Check with your local Motor Vehicle Bu
reau for possible restrictions.
260 When
installing winter tires, please
note the following:
• Only radial ply winter tires may be
installed. Ask your authorized Audi Dealer
for the recommended tire size.
• Winter tires must be mounted on all four
wheels.
• Because of the special design character
istics of radial ply M+S tires, they must be
inflated 3 psi above the cold tire inflation
pressures required for the regular radial ply
tires. However, never exceed the maximum
tire inflation pressure listed on the tire side
wall.
• Winter tires will not do their job if the
tread depth is less than 5/32 of an inch
(4 mm).
WARNING
• Tires with badly wom treads
and studs are very dangerous.
Make sure they are replaced imme
diately.
• Never mix tires of different de
sign such as steel belted radials
with radial bias belted or bias ply
tires, etc. Mixing tire types will ad
versely affect road holding and
can lead to loss of vehicle control
and personal inlury.
