used engine oil in small space heaters or boilers is not reco mmended unless emission control equipment is fitted. Dispose of
used oil through authorized waste disposal contractors, to licensed waste disposal sites or to the waste oil reclamation
trade. If in doubt, contact the Local Authority for advice on disposal facilities.
On-Board Diagnostics (OBD)

hicles use programmed electronic control systems to prov
ide engine management and emission regulation, automatic
transmission operation and anti -lock braking control. These control systems ha ve an integral On-Board Diagnostics (OBD)
facility for use in conjunction with either Jaguar diagnostic equipment or a scan t ool which is capable of retrieving DTCs,
PIDs and performing active commands.
The OBD information in this manual provid es diagnostic and rectification procedures for emission related electrical and
mechanical systems. The informat ion is intended to facilitate fault diagnosis and the subsequent rectification of vehicles
without recourse to the portab le diagnostic unit (PDU).

Diagn
osis and Testing
Refer to the PDU User Guide for details of diagnosing and testing the Adaptive Damping System. The PDU interrogates the
ADCM directly via the K and L lines to the J1962 diagnostic socket.
The PDU will give an indication of the integrity of each electron ic and electrical component. It will indicate, for example, that
the accelerometers are not broken, but not that they functionin g correctly when the vehicle is in motion. However, it is
exceptional for an accelero meter to function incorrectly in its dynamic mode if it is proved to be functioning when static.
Basic Checks
The accele
rometers have the following ch
aracteristics. At 0g (no movement of the body) each vertical accelerometer
outputs approximately 2.5V steady voltage; the lateral acce lerometer outputs approximately 1.5V. The voltage output due
to body movement is proportional to acceleration in the acceleration axis, up to approximately 4.5V and down to
approximately 0.5V.
Before changing any component, refer to the circuit diagrams and check the cont inuity of relevant harness circuits; in some
instances, the PDU will not different iate between a faulty component an d a damaged connection or wiring.

Starting System Operation

Battery, Mounting and Cables - Battery and Cables Description and Operation
The battery has been designed specifically for Jaguar. It provides the high output which is required for this vehicle, but with a
substantial saving in weight. It is a low maintenance battery, located on the right ha nd side of the luggage compartment floor.
The negative (Ground) lead is connected to the vehicle body. The positive lead is connected to a high power protection module; from
here power is connected to the starter motor an d distributed to other systems on the vehicle.
The high power protection module comprises three fuses, each of 250A capacity. Two fuses are connected in parallel to provide
protection for the starter circuit. Th e third one provides high level protection for fusebox supply circuits .
PDU is unable to diagnose the overall condition of the battery - only that it is present and supplying battery voltage to the system.
To test the battery, follow the test procedure described in Section 414-02 Generator and Regulator of this Manual.
Although these tests will not actually test the battery, they will confirm that the generator, regulator and connecting cables are
working correctly and that conseq uently, the battery may be at fault. Alternatively, the tests may indicate that the fault lies in the
generator, regulator or wiring and not in the battery.

Belt tension is achieved by an automatic tensioner; neither the belt nor the tensioner require service apart from checking
the belt wear indicators at each normal service interval.
The minimum service life of the drive belt is 100,000 miles.
Never apply oil to the belt or to the belt tensioner.
Generator - Charging Circuit

Parts List
The main components of the charging system are shown above.
The output from the generator 'B+' main te rminal passes to the battery via the main terminal on the starter motor and then
the power cable to the high power protection module located in the luggage compartment. From this module, a short main
power cable supplies the ba ttery positive terminal.
The return circuit is through the vehicle body and supplementary ground cables.
The high power protection mo dule comprises four fuses, each rated at 250 Amps.
Battery output uses the same power cable as the charging circ uit, to the high power protection module and to the starter
motor main terminal. Two similar cables, but not such a high rating, supply battery power from the high power protection
module to the fuse box in the luggage compartment an d to the fuse boxes at the front of the vehicle.

Direction indicator and side marker lamps
Each front direction indicator and side marker lamp is retained in the bumper cover by a lug at one end and a spring clip at
the other end. The side marker lamps are not electrically connected for certain markets.
The side repeater lamps are secured by sp ring clips on the lower edge of the lamp unit. In certain markets Jaguar leaper
badges are substituted for side repeater lamps.
Fog lamps
The fog lamps are located in recesses in the front bump er and secured by three screws. The la mps which are not
interchangeable left to right, are accessed from the rear of the bumper.
Operation
All lamps are controlled by the BPM which provides an appropriate output in response to an input received when a selected
switch is operated.
All lamps receive an input direct from th e BPM with the exception of the main be am, dip beam and front fog lamps which
receive an input from the BPM vi a the respective relays and fuses; refer to section 418-01.
Fault analysis must be undertaken using the PDU. Refer to Diagnosis and Testing.
